this is a possibility, however current state of database doesn't seem very up to date...
      • at least for "forreign" releases...
      • kepstin-work
Fluke: then add it to the database! :)
      • Fluke
I am slowly filling it, but to add each release would be a nightmare :)
      • kepstin-work
hmm, depends on your interpretation I suppose.
      • Fluke
well I usually add first release (vinyl) plus most widely used CD release...
      • however the things I'm entering can easily have 7 releases... :)
      • kepstin-work just adds the exact release that he has in most cases.

Adding earliest release is nice just to get the $originaldate
      • Fluke
        yes, that's why I'm doing it :)
      • xteejx
Oh how I wish for a working earliest recording (not release) :(
      • kepstin-work
xteejx: I guess we need recording groups for that :)
      • xteejx
        Hmm
      • kepstin-work
(although you might be able to figure it out from work links)
      • xteejx
tbh I'm surprised I'm the only one using MB for this purpose. Actually thought someone would've coded something up by now to search thru the recordings
      • kepstin-work
the issue is that we're missing a lot of the info required to implement that right now
      • we have a lot of duplicate recordings, a lot of recordings linked to no works, etc.
      • _5moufl joined the channel
      • xteejx
Take Akon - Locked Up for instance, I have AcoustID http://acoustid.org/track/8489e380-ba01-4362-ae... which directs Picard to the album/release http://musicbrainz.org/release/875af056-6d66-45... where I think it should go to the artists recordings page and search through for the earliest date with the recording of the same name to come to the conclusion of 2204/05
      • I know, and I'm sorting thru the AcoustIDs when I come to them
      • which will take a bit of the workload off at least. I'm still unsure about merging so leaving that for now (bar a couple of obvious ones)
      • kepstin-work
but yeah, the "correct" way to find the earliest recording will be to go through the linked work
      • xteejx
You mean "XXX is a recording of XXX" r.ship ?
      • kepstin-work
        xteejx: yes
      • hawke_1
        Yes.
      • I’m not sure how you could do that reliably though
      • xteejx
Does Picard parse through that kind of advanced r.ship though?
      • hawke_1
Assuming you’re looking for “earliest release of ‘this’ recording”
      • kepstin-work
earliest release of a specific recording can be seen by just looking at the list of releases that the recording is linked to...
      • xteejx
Yeah, since remastering is now the same thing under the Style g.lines
      • which suits me
      • _5moufl joined the channel
      • what i REALLY wantis the earliest possible date (likely to be release date) of the single
      • as long as it's not a remix or whatever, remastering doesn't count
      • kepstin-work
xteejx: how do you want to deal with cover songs?
      • or album versions that are different from singles?
      • xteejx
        diffedrfnt entity entirely
      • album/single, tagged differently
      • kepstin-work
ok, so what it sounds like you want is the date of the earliest release that is linked to the recording.
      • xteejx
unless the audio is the same anyway
      • If they are linked correctly yes that sounds right
      • kepstin-work
if they're not linked correctly, well, nothing to do but fix it in the db
      • xteejx
        of course :)
      • kepstin-work
if you can figure out how to do that automatically, we'd love to know how :)
      • (it's a *hard* problem)
      • xteejx
        too many semantics and variables
      • hawke_1
…and even with the new, slightly-more-useful definitions, “recording” is still not super clear on definition.
      • xteejx
        how so?
      • hawke_1
        OK…
      • xteejx
What do I relate it to?
      • AFAIK there has only been one actual single recorded of this song, and remixes
      • hawke_1
you would relate it to a new work.
      • (assuming it doesn’t have a work yet
      • (or non-beta if you prefer) ;-)

Add related work > ois a recording of XX
      • ?
      • hawke_1
        yep.
      • xteejx
        Ahhhh
      • hawke_1
You can search there…and create new if it doesn’t exist yet.
      • xteejx
So no need to mess about merging then?
      • hawke_1
        Right.
      • xteejx
Why didn't you tell me about this before? ;) hehe
      • hawke_1
IMO the relationship editor is too hidden.
      • xteejx
It is I agree with you
      • hawke_1
Originally it was another tab up with the 'edit' tab, but when it went to beta they moved it for some reason
      • xteejx
        Too visible? ha
      • hawke_1
        Dunno
      • bitmap might know, he wrote the thing. ;-)
      • xteejx
        So, question...
      • bitmap
not really any reason except the sidebar is where all the other edit links were :)
      • hawke_1
        bitmap: except for 'edit [release]'
      • xteejx
Does this make things more visible as far as linked things are (does that make sense?), and will it be parseable by Picard in that it can use Advanced Relationships to find originaldate ?
      • hawke_1
Not sure about the first part, but the second: no, Picard cannot use this info for original date.
      • It does make it more visible in that you can have information about composer/lyricist
      • and gives a central point for all recordings of that song.
      • xteejx
That doesn't give me what I need :(
      • hawke_1
and also lets it show up on the related artists’ works page.
      • xteejx
        ah
      • hawke_1
Yeah, there is no way to get what you need (and we all would like) …at least not yet.
      • xteejx
I was beginning to think I was the only one asking for some obscure combination of datasets I'll be honest :p
      • hawke_1
Until recently, that information would have just been inaccurate anyway, so there wasn’t any real reason to do it
      • xteejx
the Jaikoz tagger seems to do some of this searching backwards in time though for that recording...?
      • hawke_1
(because recordings used to be something like 'masters')
      • Maybe, dunno about jaikoz
      • xteejx
shame I can't pinch that search functionality from it ;)
      • xteejx Kate Middleton has just had the baby FYI anyone that's interested
      • reosarevok
        Who?
      • xteejx

      • reosarevok

      • xteejx
Kate Middleton, wife of HRH William of Wales
      • reosarevok, yeah lol
      • ianmcorvidae doesn't get all excited about other rich kids destined to become prolific public speakers, not likely to do so about this one :P
      • reosarevok
        ianmcorvidae, you socialist!!!
      • :p
      • ianmcorvidae
        something like that
      • xteejx
oh don't worry I'm the same, don't give a crap to be perfectly honest, just saw it on bbc news :p
      • Would it be naughty of me to merge a recording with the original recording? Not going to start doing it without an OK from you guys
      • hawke_1
Depends on what the basis is for merge.
      • If it’s a remix, then yes it would be naughty. :-)
      • xteejx
Ah no even I'm not that stupid ;)
      • hawke_1
Otherwise there’s a lot more leeway.
      • xteejx
Ok, when I find an example, can I throw it your way?
      • hawke_1
        Sure.
      • read http://beta.musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Recording too, if you haven’t yet.

I wonder if advertising through the station to get free CDs that people are just going to throw away. After they've been checked/entered into MB I can give them to a local charity shop
      • hawke_1
        Not a bad idea.
      • xteejx

      • well, nothing anymore.
      • given that you and I failed to connect for weeks and weeks, we found another venue for our summit.

      • and I'm sorry I've been so busy
      • ruaok
        yeah, I feel ya.
      • no worries.
      • kloeri
        I'll cancel with CBS then
      • ruaok
        maybe next year?
      • kloeri
sure, it's still a great place and I'd love to meet all of you
      • ruaok
