i assume that if they called it "findus" I'd feel the way you do
2013-08-20 23233, 2013
jesus2099
haha exactly !
2013-08-20 23234, 2013
kepstin-work notes that having an application that could submit all that data would effectively have to be a cd ripper that just deleted the files after it was done
2013-08-20 23251, 2013
jesus2099
i would prefer something more cool… like probably something more … UPPERKASE
2013-08-20 23203, 2013
kepstin-work
well, it could be a bit faster, since it only has to rip the first 2 minutes of each song for fingerprinting. but still.
2013-08-20 23214, 2013
CatQuest
i remember all the way ago with TRM's. inhouseuk had some thing that could get TRMs fro mcd

jesus2099
maybe MB-CDNFOKOMANDOR sounds cool
2013-08-20 23212, 2013
snartal
luks: Anyway to my real questions.... it says 5 sources for a particular id... Why would there be 5 sources?
2013-08-20 23202, 2013
kepstin-work
hmm. given the design of the fingerprint algorithm, you could probably get away with using a faster less accurate cd ripping mechanism, and still get decent fingerprints.
2013-08-20 23214, 2013
jesus2099
could be 5 times the same people with a different pathed CD rip
2013-08-20 23234, 2013
jesus2099
i never remember what i already did so i usually do this several times for instance
2013-08-20 23240, 2013
jesus2099
this→things
2013-08-20 23214, 2013

snartal: it was submitted 5 times, without having the history public you can't really know it's if 5 people or 1 person with 5 identical submissions
2013-08-20 23253, 2013
snartal
So, I can do a submit without doing a check for a match first?
2013-08-20 23206, 2013
luks
yes
2013-08-20 23231, 2013
jesus2099
luks: if you implement (yeah) something like public/private settings, will you show everything, just the names of private people will be mosaic
2013-08-20 23233, 2013
jesus2099
?
2013-08-20 23200, 2013
luks
jesus2099: yes, most likely it will be like that
2013-08-20 23202, 2013
snartal
ok, and regarding the Linked MB part, the one that says sources=5 shows sources=1... why would those # be different?
2013-08-20 23209, 2013
jesus2099
or you add them sun glasses or something neat like that
snartal: fingerprints can be submitted without MBIDs
2013-08-20 23210, 2013
luks
so e.g. 4 users submitted just the fingerprint, one user submitted fingerprint+MBID
2013-08-20 23211, 2013
jesus2099
hey it would be so cool to have a gravater option &sunglasses=1 that would auto-add sunglaasses
2013-08-20 23230, 2013
jesus2099
kepstin-work: thanks for your thoughts, i’ve just read them (they were lost in many lines, didn’t see them)
2013-08-20 23218, 2013
jesus2099
it’s my dream app CD2MB ← this name is better
2013-08-20 23245, 2013
jesus2099
just a submitter, not a tagger
2013-08-20 23257, 2013
luks wishes CDs would finally "die" :/
2013-08-20 23258, 2013
kepstin-work
but yes, a cd fingerprinting application is simply a cd ripper that rips the first 2 minutes of each track using a fast/insecure method, fingerprints them (with appropriate settings to pass the file real length along), and then deletes the temp files :/
2013-08-20 23227, 2013
jesus2099
kepstin-work: with submitting TOC and ISRC too
2013-08-20 23236, 2013

2013-08-20 23207, 2013
kepstin-work has gone to reading books on an epaper ebook reader and hasn't looked back; but online music sales are really lagging behind the ebook market :(
2013-08-20 23213, 2013
jesus2099 love BSCD! :D
2013-08-20 23237, 2013
jesus2099
kepstin-work: really you read ebooks ?
2013-08-20 23245, 2013
kepstin-work
yep.
2013-08-20 23249, 2013

I'm slightly annoyed that most of the popular artist only sell on amazon and itunes, which only sells in a few countries
2013-08-20 23250, 2013
jesus2099
i read pbooks :D
2013-08-20 23254, 2013
kuno
kepstin-work: hm, I thought it would be the other way around.
2013-08-20 23256, 2013
luks
so I just tend to pirate those
2013-08-20 23212, 2013
luks
but many bands are discovering bandcamp or have custom eshops
2013-08-20 23212, 2013
kepstin-work
aside from a couple special collectors editions where I got physical hardcopies, I pretty much only buy ebooks now.
2013-08-20 23226, 2013

the digital market in japan has been *really* slow to take off.
2013-08-20 23258, 2013
jesus2099
cool↗
2013-08-20 23259, 2013
kepstin-work
which is kind of strange, really.
2013-08-20 23206, 2013
jesus2099
no, it’s good thing
2013-08-20 23222, 2013
jesus2099
they pirate less, that’s all
2013-08-20 23231, 2013
kepstin-work notes that several larger japanese artists are finally starting to move onto itunes, and a few have even made their stuff "worldwide" available
2013-08-20 23248, 2013
luks
I'm not sure if moving to itunes is a progress
2013-08-20 23204, 2013
kuno notes that some japanese stuff on itunes still has DRM, and iTunes doesn't tell you about that beforehand.
2013-08-20 23230, 2013
kepstin-work
well, it was itunes that proved that digital media sales could be a thing for the us market, pretty much.
2013-08-20 23233, 2013
jesus2099 hate hate hate when some release is digital exclusive !
2013-08-20 23237, 2013
kepstin-work
so I see it as a stepping stone.
2013-08-20 23203, 2013
HankCorto joined the channel
2013-08-20 23209, 2013
kepstin-work particularly hates it when some release is a digital exclusive only available for purchase with a cell phone in japan ;)
2013-08-20 23223, 2013
kuno
kepstin-work: hah, yikes
2013-08-20 23246, 2013
jesus2099
uh oh that’s even worse yeah… mine is japanese but sold easy digitally but i boycot it… actually if i bought it i would loose it
jesus2099: I've bought cds from .uk, .fr, .de, .com and .jp while in a different country so I assume it's the same for them all. I'd try .cn too, but there's quite a bit of a language barrier there :P
2013-08-20 23235, 2013
jesus2099
there is no barrier for CD… there is barrier for games (got to use other webstites then)
2013-08-20 23238, 2013
jesus2099
nikki: ↗ indeed
2013-08-20 23203, 2013
nikki
the mp3 stuff is terrible though
2013-08-20 23210, 2013
jesus2099
yes, sounds terrible
2013-08-20 23212, 2013
nikki
so far my three experiences with it have been 1) buying mp3s for kuno because they wouldn't sell to him, accidentally buying something I didn't want from .com while trying to see if it would let me and not being allowed to buy something I do want because I'm in the right country :P
2013-08-20 23220, 2013
nikki adds 2) and 3) in there somewhere
2013-08-20 23233, 2013
jesus2099
haha
2013-08-20 23247, 2013
jesus2099
almost my only experience with mp3 is temp folder
2013-08-20 23229, 2013
nikki
the alternatives were pay more for an m4a from itunes or not buy it at all, so I went with the latter
2013-08-20 23259, 2013
kepstin-work has a limited, small number of files which he either purchased as aac/mp3 or... found as aac/mp3.
2013-08-20 23201, 2013
jesus2099
(applause) good choice
2013-08-20 23227, 2013
kepstin-work
the rest of my mp3s are simply lossy copies of stuff I have as lossless, and I'm steadily moving those to newer formats.
2013-08-20 23239, 2013
kepstin-work
(mostly to save space on my ipod)
2013-08-20 23214, 2013
jesus2099
i rarely buy software (digital music, programs, etc.) i prefer have it for real… i only bought impulse tracker 2 and EmEditor iirc
2013-08-20 23227, 2013
nikki
heh, I use oggs for my portable player
2013-08-20 23228, 2013
luks
not sure if having something on a CD makes it real
2013-08-20 23239, 2013
luks
something digital
2013-08-20 23253, 2013
jesus2099
luks: it’s real if it’s on CD
2013-08-20 23209, 2013
luks
but it's a real CD, not a real program :)
2013-08-20 23228, 2013
jesus2099
for my portable player (well they all have been stolen recently but) i use mono mp3 because i’m deaf one ear :)
2013-08-20 23245, 2013
kepstin-work
hmm. we allow people to submit edits on musicbrainz without confirming an email address?
2013-08-20 23247, 2013
reosarevok
Heh, yeah, I mean, at least for games, lately even if you have bought it on CD the companies can just block you from using them
2013-08-20 23254, 2013
kepstin-work
that makes no sense.. they can't receive edit note emails
2013-08-20 23203, 2013
nikki
kepstin-work: we shouldn't, but it's notorious for breaking
2013-08-20 23207, 2013
reosarevok
(I guess if you have it on CD you can at least try to hack around it though)
2013-08-20 23232, 2013
reosarevok
They can *remove* their email
2013-08-20 23236, 2013
nikki
kepstin-work: I unset that earlier
2013-08-20 23239, 2013
reosarevok
Oh
2013-08-20 23242, 2013
kepstin-work
and we are having issues getting that user to respond to edit notes :/
2013-08-20 23255, 2013
nikki
that's exactly why I did :P
2013-08-20 23215, 2013
kepstin-work
ah. so you unset their email as a way to stop them from making further edits?
