if so, then the answer is because we need to split it up because different parts of the db are under different licenses, and we also split it up so that people can pick which bits to import (hardly anyone needs the edit history, for example)
so it would still involve a variety of files
and also we've just always done it that way, so switching would require extra work from our already stretched devs to fix something that isn't broken for us :)
the dumps are actually just tab-separated files that you could use with "copy" if you wanted. before luks wrote mbslave I once imported the db by running CreateTables.sql and just using "copy" to import each table from the file, because I didn't have enough free space to do it with the official import script

Now that's annoying :p

Man, this Ki/oon debate makes me think that we really really need label artwork. :-D
nikki
feel free to implement it :P
hawke1
:-p
CallerNo6
hawke1: how would that make a difference in the Ki/oon edit? You mean, determining whether "Ki/oon" is text vs an imprint?
(on that particular release, I mean)

CallerNo6: In that we could have a set of images associated with the label and compare them with the release's artwork
I'm thinking about putting out an RFC proposing the AR "is an imprint of" along with an "imprint" label type. -- does that make sense, or bad idea?
reosarevok
Dunno, labels are hard :p
Nyanko-sensei: that one was a dumb joke
CallerNo6
Nyanko-sensei: it's probably not obvious unless you know Jesus2xxx, but that proposal was a joke.
reosarevok
(the "RFC"
)
Nyanko-sensei
oh ^^;
the thing is, most CD+DVD releases have 2 catalog numbers associated to them
some compilations have a catalog number for each CD
so yeah, removing multiple labels will mess those up
I think imprints as separate from record labels would be a good idea
hawke_
Anybody else? :-)
Nyanko-sensei
also make them have images attached to them, so people who add them would know the right imprint
reosarevok
hawke_: I have no idea. I'd rather not make the system yet more complex than it is
Nyanko-sensei
if that becomes a thing, I can safely add catalog numbers to labels without getting the imprint police on my tail
hawke_
Nyanko-sensei: well, having images attached is beyond what can be done with an AR...but yeah that would be nice.
reosarevok: I'm hoping it will help make it clearer than the present "labels are all imprints mostly, except that sometimes they're also the company that owns them...kinda...or something."
reosarevok
hawke_: that might work for major stuff, but what about small indie labels?
You suddenly get a needless dupe?
Nyanko-sensei
a lot of big labels changed owners and imprints over years. and a lot of artists were printing their own fictional logos while having the record label imprint on it as well
it gets confusing really fast
hawke_
reosarevok: Dunno. Maybe we can somehow get it to be used only when necessary, i.e. when the imprint changes hands?
CallerNo6
I agree. Confusing, fast. Life used to seem to simple.

what image type do I use for the vinyl itself?
I think it's a picture of the vinyl inside a clear screen cover
I blame the lack of a circle and the fact that I rarely watch TV for myself

why when I find a booklet and a joshinweb page with the names my eyes get sparkling and I start adding all the relationships to the release? and when I'm done it's past midnight already ;___;
time is unfair :<

it's this sleep stuff that's annoying. If we didn't need that,w e could add relationships all night.

j-pop albums are evil. they credit everyone who worked on the song
as opposed to indie metal bands where they rarely credit individual members: arranged and composed by the whole band, because :effort: to credit separate members on each song
