      • hawke1
        as-in-other-database, even less so.
      • CallerNo6
I think we're on the same page.
      • hawke1
I mean, I guess I can see 'as on cover' being relevant inasmuch as it’s interesting to document what releases actually said.
      • but these edits aren’t even preserving something that’s on any cover that I know of.
      • CallerNo6
It sounds like a ridiculous thing to do anyway. The only time I can imagine it mattering is with fictional characters or maybe alter-egos.
      • hawke1
It would be somewhat interesting to see when exactly the artist in question went from using 桜井智 to 櫻井智, I guess.
      • CallerNo6
(and I'm not even sure about those)
      • I guess. But if the choice is between making a db that helps you see connections and making a db that helps you obfuscate connections...
      • ... my vote is for seeing connections.
      • If it's not always an either-or, but at some point the granularity is too damned high.
      • hawke1
        Yep.

      • pen‐names ARE used in releases (of course)
      • hawke1
jesus2099: Sometimes they are, but I was speaking of this specific release.
      • jesus2099
ruaok: any news of the bot which added some bad and/or duplicate contents ? now when i linger on MB i can see its mark…
      • hawke1: MY SISTER ?
      • you have scans ?
      • of the lyrics credits ?
      • if they’re that way in JASRAC (together with many others) i have little doubt it was not on releaseS
      • hawke1
jesus2099: This was before hibiscuskazeneko linked to the VGMDB for the single.
      • ruaok
I never got mail from you, jesus2099. :(
      • jesus2099
i used the send mail feature on your user page
      • hawke1
jesus2099: I still think that in this specific case it is such a minor variation that they should be merged anyway
      • jesus2099
can you [off] me an address or a PM ? i will forward…
      • minor … ?
      • ruaok
        done
      • hawke1
jesus2099: Yes, a tiny tiny difference. Like “Alan” vs. “Al” only even smaller than that since it’s pronounced the same.
      • jesus2099
there is a huge difference in my opinion
      • it’s a name change
      • it means more than that
      • hawke1
jesus2099: or like (to take an example from the style page) Katie Tunstall vs K.T. Tunstall
      • jesus2099
ruaok: damn either i didn’t send it, or it was filtered in my spam…… :/
      • ruaok
my spam didn't see anything. I just checked.
      • hawke1
jesus2099: what does it mean to you? I’ll be the first to admit that I am not intimately familiar with the history of these artists. But there is little mention on the wikipedia page about it, I would think that if it were significant they would have mentioned.
      • jesus2099
accofrding to yahoo mail i did not send the message at all…… :/ maybe i forgot to click send or something. i’ll write another one but not today, grrr
      • ruaok: ↗
      • ruaok
        k :)
      • jesus2099
any name change is significant to me when it’s japanese artist… i have never seen anything as simplistic as Alan→Al yet
      • ok i’m not japanese
      • but i know you would as well merge all pen names ;p
      • i did the merge mistake once some time ago
      • i regret because it’s so hard to do the work again of splitting
      • now that we have AC and that i’ve grown up
      • hawke1
I think AC lets us do a lot more merging than we could before. But of course I have long had the opinion that “AC captures credit, AR captures fact”. That’s not an argument we’re going to settle here/now, of course.
      • jesus2099
        i regret a post‐AC merge of course
      • crap ! a pre‐AC merge i meant
      • i should have been more patient (like you should now) and wait a little bit more until we got AC and then only merge keeping AC
      • you should be little bit more patient and merge only when we do get the AC on AR stuff
      • or you’ll regret big tears like me today
      • (or you won’t, maybe)
      • hawke1
        jesus2099: :-) — I just don’t think MBS-333 can work. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong someday.
      • jesus2099
maybe you would not believe in AC before either
      • it’ the same 100%
      • check out discogs*
      • it will make you believe ;)
      • have faith
      • btw i have to switch off that computer, good night MB ;)
      • CallerNo6 still thinks that part of the solution is to treat an mb-artist as a modular piece of an IRL-artist.
      • CallerNo6
(which is how I understand the current mb ontology)
      • er, that is "one or more mb-artists are used to represent an IRL-artist"
      • jesus2099
        héhé
      • hawke1
CallerNo6: In other words, add a level above current MB-artist?
      • CallerNo6
hawke1: well, definitely another level conceptually. I don't know how implementation should work.
      • hawke1
CallerNo6: I feel like that wouldn’t really help much…basically would turn our MB-artist into an artist-credit entity.
      • CallerNo6
That's what I'm saying. IIUC, it already is that.
      • hawke1
which is ok but a lot of work.
      • More than adding release-specific credits to each AR, I think.
      • CallerNo6
But it's the system we already have :-)
      • hawke1
CallerNo6: From a data-editing perspective, it’s a matter of splitting a million artists vs. changing a million artist credits. Dunno which ends up being easier.
      • CallerNo6
        splitting?
      • I'm not saying we should have a new artist for every minor name variation.
      • (although if it can be done, somebody will do it I guess)
      • I just think that once you compile a list of all the things you wish you could do with ACs, they start to look a lot like mb-artists. dates, relationships specific to that name, etc
      • derwin
        oops
      • hawke1
CallerNo6: I would think to just treat it similar to how we edit track-artist ACs now, but for every AR: a release-specific name for the related artist.

hi. i've this album http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tchaikovsky-Ballet-Suit... it's not in mb. i'm unsure which release group to add it to, and then the artist. if it's a cover the the artist performing with an artist credit toward the original artist?
      • derwin
this is a preetty serious question
      • as classical editing is complex.
      • someone in here can answer...
      • n1md4
another (eventual) string to the bow :) but thanks
      • CallerNo6
      • (found by searching for release = "ballet suiten AND artist:Пётр Ильич Чайковский" )
      • hmm. shouldn't "AND asin:B000001GX7" have worked?
      • oh. duh. no "AND".
      • n1md4: so you don't need to add the release, but if you feel like it you could add the discid and scanned cover art :-)
