'n' is, I think, the correct abbreviation for "and" because and has 3 letters.
      • KRS-Cuan
It's a bit ludicrous to correct this to "proper English" when the title also contains "Niggaz".
      • And "-az" is not the proper way to form English plurals.
      • reosarevok
        heh
      • Neither is 'n' the proper way to write and
      • But we do lowercase "da" for "the", so I guess there's precedent to improve "wrong English" too :p
      • hawke: ping
      • hawke
        reosarevok: pong
      • reosarevok
        So
      • I'm looking at event series now
      • Any idea what's the right English word for a series of performances of an opera, ballet, musical or whatever?
      • I know I want to add that but not what to call it :D
      • "Run"?
      • hawke
        hmm…season?
      • "run" probably isn't bad.
      • KRS-Cuan
xps2: I don't think we need a secondary type for something as specific as that. Part of those releases could also fall under the soundtrack type.
      • Although image songs are technically not part of a series' soundtrack.
      • derwin
currently it's "n" and I am pretty sure "n'" or "'n" or "'n'" are more correct than that :/
      • reosarevok
        "production"?
      • xps2
KRS-Cuan: It is not important whether I want to add secondary type.
      • hawke
        reosarevok: yeah, that might work.
      • xps2
KRS-Cuan: this is important. kepstin-laptop: The purpose makes sense to me; it would allow solo works under the artists own name to be displayed separately from their character/role work.
      • derwin
      • Krystof
I think a "production" and a "run" are slightly different
      • you could revive a production for a second run
      • reosarevok
derwin: seems to be http://www.discogs.com/master/18938 now?
      • chirlu`
I came to the same conclusion. :-) Probably merged.
      • derwin
reosarevok: why did they change their URLS :/
      • reosarevok
Krystof: hmm. So would you use just "run"? "Show run"? "performance run"?
      • derwin: *shrug* they seem to like breaking stuff
      • Krystof
I think I would use just "run"
      • v6lur joined the channel
      • chirlu`
derwin/reosarevok: They don’t have a redirection for merges. – Anyway, https://beta.musicbrainz.org/url/c7c97d07-57cf-... now is associated with the release groups.
      • *three
      • hawke
Krystof: wouldn’t that be a different production?
      • (a revival, I mean)
      • “The current Broadway revival of Kander and Ebb's 1966 musical CABARET is not entirely faithful to the original production.” says one review on Amazon.
      • Krystof
        dunno
      • msordo joined the channel
      • if you tour, is that part of the same production? What if you have a break? I don't know
      • msordo
        Hi everyone
      • reosarevok
        hi!
      • msordo
Does anyone know how to query freebase using an MBID? I would really appreciate it!
      • kepstin-laptop
hmm, I looked this up for brewster a while back, it should be in the chat logs
      • lets see if I can find it
      • hawke
Krystof: Yeah, I dunno. At least one reference site refers to 'touring productions' and that a 'production' refers to all the various physical stuff involved with making the show. (presumably that changes somewhat as stuff breaks and needs to be changed/repaired/upgraded, especially for a touring production).
      • reosarevok
Yeah, think I'll go with "run"
      • Seems closer to the definition I'm supposed to be working with :)
      • kepstin-laptop
      • reosarevok
        Thanks!
      • kepstin-laptop
msordo: that example looks up a recording, I expect other things would work similarly.
      • msordo
oh, excellent! Thank you very much @kepstin-laptop :-)
      • kepstin-laptop
msordo: the "ns0:id" field is the freebase ID, which you can use to correlate to other things
      • hawke
reosarevok: So does that mean the series will cover several productions (i.e. revivals will be part of the same series as an original run? ;-) )
      • msordo
        I will, thanks
      • hawke
reosarevok: Probably doesn’t help that I don’t know exactly what your series is meant to cover. ;-)
      • reosarevok
That seems like a different run in the same way a "revival" of a ten year old tour is not really the same tour
      • hawke
reosarevok: right — but is your series meant to cover 'all the various productions of $show' or 'every performance of the 19xx production/revival of $show'?
      • reosarevok
Well, it was originally requested for AKB48, not musicals or stuff like that, so I don't think that was taken into account
      • But it seems absurd to have a revival as part of the same series
      • (although it does seem reasonable to have a relationship to connect the two)
      • hawke
Both seem like something it would be useful to keep track of.
      • simukis_ joined the channel
      • chirlu`
Isn’t a series of events almost the same as a multi-part event?
      • hawke
      • “I've listed the significant Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas separately here, only because they kind of threw off the curve, and it didn't seem fair.”
      • reosarevok
chirlu`: not really? I mean, you're not expected to attend more than one "part" of the event, it seems like basically a series
      • I mean, you could also say a work series and, say, a song cycle work are very similar, and you would be right, but :)
      • mjam
        Hi Guys!
      • reosarevok
        hi
      • mjam
I'm wanting to setup my own mb slave server for an app i'm building. It is a commercial application but not at this stage its just a personal project. Do you think there will be any issues with licensing mb at this stage?
      • reosarevok
Does it have ads and/or charge people money at this stage? If neither are true, then probably not, but it doesn't hurt if you mail to info [at musicbrainz.org] with more info
      • mjam
great. I will do that. Thanks for you help.
      • I'm literally at the very early stages of my application. I'm am planning on setting up a slave mb server this weekend. There are lots of sources online how to do this. Do you guys have any recommedations?
      • *recommendation?
      • The app won't have any ad's just yet and as for charging its going to be free!
      • reosarevok
That sounds non-commercial, in which case it's probably fine. But yeah, just write to that mail explaining it a bit and the people in charge of that will let you know :)
      • mjam
        Great thanks.
      • @ALL if any of you have setup a mb slave server at all. give me shout. I'm about to set one up. So if your happy to help I'd love to hear from you. my email: m [at mikejam.es]
      • Cheers!
      • Basically just after general pointers and sources of information to set one up
      • chirlu`
If you just want the database, mbslave is probably best.
      • If you need the server, too, I’d just follow the INSTALL.md.
      • If instead you use some text from the web, make sure it is not totally outdated (often given away by mentioning carton).
      • mjam
        cheers!
      • So what would your recommendation be?
      • I'm setting up a mb db so I can query as much as I want by my webservice
      • was thinking to setup the mb data as a webservice behind my public api
      • is the mb slave db structured enough to just query? This would be better as my api would be able to initiate the searches directly on the db without a hop to another webservice
      • kepstin-laptop
mjam: the slave db you get matches the structure of the production db exactly; you can query it directly if you prefer.
      • but our data structure is quite complex :)

      • mjam
I thought so, I'd like to also get responses back with the score ratings like you get from the webservice
      • As this is quite useful when deciding on which track to match too
      • kepstin-laptop
mjam: for that, you have to be running the lucene-based search server, which is an entirely separate piece of software :)
      • chirlu`
Searches (including score calculation) are handled by a separate server, the search server.
      • mjam
Webserive sounds like the best solution without having to dive into the mb server too much. I have enough complexity within my services as it is
      • *webservice
      • The search server would that the web service?
      • kepstin-laptop
the webservice is implemented in the perl musicbrainz server code, except for the search parts - those are implemented in a separate java search server.
      • mjam
      • this is requiring which services?
