or... i could just run steam on my existing desktop computer rather than getting an extra one that I can't use for other apps?
      • CallerNo6
when SteamOS makes it into the annual 'linux sucks' presentation, then I'll know it has arrived
      • Leo_Verto
kepstin-laptop, ofc you could, some people just want to buy a complete console
      • kepstin-laptop
sure, but that means i'm not the target market of steam machines
      • Junior_ joined the channel
      • Mineo
Leo_Verto: that implies you're willing to think about where you run your games if you already have a pc that's capable of running steam
      • kepstin-laptop is apparently nobody because of that :)
      • and I don't think the hardcore gamers will simply still assemble their own pc because they'll be upgrading it all the time anyways
      • Leo_Verto
kepstin-laptop, nope, you still benefit from them because everything that runs on SteamOS also runs on steam for linux :D
      • Mineo
        s/don't//
      • Leo_Verto
ofc the hardcore gamers and people like me and you will continue building their own PCs, but a linux distro will actually become a legit option for them
      • a lot of people don't switch because of one or two games
      • with publishers and devs being interested in the steam machine market, more and more games will be ported
      • kepstin-laptop actually already has two systems with a kvm switch, a windows box for gaming and a linux box for real work.
      • Mineo
Leo_Verto: so now you have a few more gamers on linux, how does that make windows die relatively soon?
      • Leo_Verto
Linux as a platform is going to become more attractive in general
      • reosarevok
Yeah, it might make Linux as a platform as big as OSX :p
      • Leo_Verto
And honestly, Windows is only the most used desktop OS because it came first
      • derwin
        macos predates windows
      • windows is the most used desktop because bill gates got it bundled with generic pcs
      • and apple wanted hardware market share
      • Leo_Verto
        mhm, the IBM deal
      • Mineo
I'm still with kepstin-laptop there, the linux userspace is not as great as many people say it is (not only regarding security)
      • Leo_Verto
still a whole lot better than the proprietary, insecure mess windows is
      • kepstin-laptop
i mean, i love my linux desktop systems. But i'm a software developer, somewhat involved in the creation and setup of said systems
      • security holes are being found and patched *all the time* in linux stuff
      • Mineo
Leo_Verto: my parents don't care if linux is supposedly more secure
      • kepstin-laptop
an unupdated linux system from a couple years ago might as well be windows xp
      • most embedded linux systems and linux phones (e.g. android) receive security updates either late or never
      • Leo_Verto
closed source means that there still are tons of exploitable issues slumbering deep inside windows
      • mhm, stuff like heartbleed and shellshock?
      • Mineo
it also means that not everyone can just look at the source to find them :P
      • kepstin-laptop
same is true of linux, just because something is open-source doesn't mean there's no security holes still in there
      • most of them are just called "bugs" tho
      • reosarevok will believe on linux-on-the-desktop when big companies sell Linux laptops that autoupdate to middle-aged, non-tech people and they don't complain about it :p
      • reosarevok: ever heard of something called a "chromebook"?
      • Leo_Verto
Mineo, people who want to exploit something are going to find holes either way
      • Mineo
reosarevok: if you wait until you're middle-aged, that might actually happen :P
      • reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: did anyone buy those? :p
      • kepstin-laptop
        reosarevok: apparently.
      • Leo_Verto
security by obscurity is an outdated concept
      • kepstin-laptop
the unfortunate thing is that a lot of linux stuff isn't really secure, but is only considered so because it is obscure.
      • STalKer-X
whom do i enter as artist, when there is a composer and a performer? :D
      • Leo_Verto
        performer
      • kepstin-laptop
the artist credit should be the credited artist, and link the composer and performer with composer and performer relations.
      • reosarevok
        STalKer-X: classical?
      • CallerNo6
if you're talking about track artists on classical, theatre or soundtracks, there are more specific guidelines
      • reosarevok
Unrelated to all of it, but Peter Warlock is a pretty cool name to have
      • Leo_Verto
        yup
      • CallerNo6 would totally get a chromebook (but not as a primary machine)
      • I honestly prefer to have a bit more power in a laptop
      • reosarevok
I mean, I once bought an OLPC lappy
      • I would also happily get a Chromebook if I had money to waste :p
      • But yeah
      • Leo_Verto
not a full-blown gaming laptop but enough for multitasking, a few dozen tabs in firefox and compiling stuff
      • reosarevok imagines it'd still be more powerful than this 2006 LifeBook I'm using as a backup for my main lappy
      • kepstin-laptop
yeah, that's why my laptop is pretty heavy compared to most other 14" laptops nowadays...
      • reosarevok
(fun fact: someone stole my OLPC laptop from my luggage in a Prague hostel at some point, but didn't take the macbook. wtf)
      • nikki
        clearly they've used a mac before :P
      • reosarevok
        hahaha
      • YEah, that's more likely than them having used an XO-1
      • (the thing was useless, but so cute...)
      • STalKer-X
        reosarevok not really.
      • reosarevok
Then yeah, just whoever is credited
      • STalKer-X
      • oh, there it is on amazon.
      • what should be the correct title?
      • CallerNo6
      • CatQuest
somewhere between casual and hardcore gamers
      • but that's everyone i know!
      • and me
      • I need a windows mchine for games :/
      • hibiscuskazeneko
        me too
      • mine is 5 years old and slow as molasses
      • I have a host of FPS's that it can't run
      • CatQuest
most games on gog i want/have are old enoug to work in dosbox, but the install thing is only for new windows machines
      • reosarevok
Is there no Wine for osx?
      • Leo_Verto
        yep
      • *there is
      • CallerNo6
STalKer-X, subtitles, when separated by a newline on the cover, are separated by commas in the mb title. If that was your question.
      • oops. not commas. colons.
      • sorry.
      • STalKer-X
i did not do the title
      • correct it would be this?: Erotic Massage; Echoes of the Underworld; Ambient relaxation
      • reosarevok
        That's a semicolon ;)
      • Colon is :
      • STalKer-X

      • "echoes of the underworld" is actually a recurring series
      • should i really put it as subtitle? :x
      • Siddharth_ joined the channel
      • CallerNo6
if "echoes of the underworld" is a series title, then you'd put that first.
      • I'm not sure what to do with "ambient relaxation".
      • CatQuest
yes there is wine. but it seems like such a cludge to use wine to run a win8 optimised Dosbox version of a dos game when I could have just run it in osx native dosbox :P
      • CallerNo6
maybe it ("ambient relaxation") is merely descriptive, and not part of the title, like e.g. "as seen on TV"

CatQuest: "most games on gog i want/have are old enoug to work in dosbox, but the install thing is only for new windows machines" — Lutris, for Linux, have a lot of these installing to Linux-native DOSBox. That's how I'm running SW: Dark Forces.
      • Of course, that doesn't help for Mac OS users. :)
      • CatQuest
I wish just the original install thingy was an option
      • Freso
        Sure.

      • http://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_dos_games_... seems to say "install with wine, run with your local dosbox"
      • Freso
That's pretty much what Lutris does for Steam DOSBox games not packaged for Linux.
      • CatQuest
hmm yes, because often it will work afer to install it, but can't run after. also edits and stuff. HMM I'll try this thing
