When one says "Boston", one is generally referring to... the Massachusetts one?
ruchiranga
I am in the middle of designing a proposal for the http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-7789 improvement. Do you think providing all the available search fields from index search syntax in the GUI would be a good idea?
Freso
ruchiranga: If you can make it work usable, sure.
ruchiranga
or just some frequently used ones like gender tags country etc?
Ten in the US, it seems. Not counting those named Boston Township or anything other than just Boston.
Freso
Is MA the Northwestern state?
Leftmost
Northeastern.
Freso
Yes, that's what I meant.

And they say Americans are bad at geography. ;)

i am in a search of specific userscripts :<

Happy hunting.
Leftmost: Well, you're the ones calling your west "the East".

Freso, the world ends at the tip of Alaska. Don't you know anything?

Just don't let them catch you looking.

(well, not 'you'. Alaskans)

Fresco: So I was thinking of something like a page which has a side bar containing the filters and clicking multiple filters would display the results accordingly on the right. And the filters would be in like a hierarchy where the user will go expanding categories and narrowing the constraints as they go deep
the hierarchy would make the page look simple
yet show all the necessary fields the user is interested in
does that sound like a good idea?

similar to jira search?
ruchiranga
im sorry i do not have an idea what jira seach looks like
reosarevok_ joined the channel
I just had a look at the jira search and yes what I meant is something like that :)
Anyway, yes, if it can be made to work without being too confusion, it would be great. :)
ruchiranga
thanks for the links. that is kind of exactly what I had in my mind :) so do you suggest making some mockups as the proposal or just text explaining the way it would work?
STalKer-X_c
i find the jira search a bit too overcomplex
what i imagine is something like when you add a release. first tab, release information.
(which is linked from the GSoC stuff so I guess ruchiranga has seen it, but maybe not others :) )
STalKer-X_c
that is different from what i had in mind :)
reosarevok_
I mean, that's nowhere near a finished thing, but as an idea I like it :)
STalKer-X_c
:)
ruchiranga
that link is where i got the inspiration from :) wouldn't it be better to provide the possible choices to the user than making them to type them?
STalKer-X_c
ok, i guess I need 3 fields then.
ruchiranga
im sorry i didn't understand what you meant
STalKer-X_c
first the main category (artist, release, label, event, bla), second all the properties from the main category, for artists the stuff like type, gender, country. and then a field where you input your searchterm :D
reosarevok_
Hmm. I guess it should start very general (just a search field) so you can get results from all types, which is part of the point - but if you do select an entity type it should provide all the extra fine-tuning for the type
(as in, no reason to show a "gender" option if "artist" isn't selected I guess?)
(but for example "area" is more general, so you could be "all artists, labels and releases with this name from France")
ruchiranga
but may be a user wants just to browse through the databse?
reosarevok_
ruchiranga: oh, sure, I don't mean they should fill the field mandatorily :)
Just that most people will want to so it would make sense to have that fairly up and central
STalKer-X_c
reosarevok_ right now the search forces you to select a category :p
reosarevok_
STalKer-X_c: that's something we would like to stop doing, at least as an option :)
ruchiranga
yes that sounds cool :) so a user can either put a search term and narrow the search OR just browse the db without a seach term
reosarevok_
ruchiranga: even if you *do* decide to make the search field the starting point, you can always make it so * works as "ok, show me *all*"
STalKer-X_c
i would like an option to use &advanced=1 from the search.
reosarevok_
STalKer-X_c: there's a script around for that in the meantime
(dunno where right now but I bet someone here does know :) )
STalKer-X_c
haven't found it.

i also want a userscript that provides links to acousticbrainz
yes we can make the search field to have * if no input is given :) so how do you suggest I prepare the draft proposal? mockups or just text explaining the funcitonality?
reosarevok_
I'd say mostly text but throwing some quick mockups doesn't hurt
"Text text text IMAGE SEE THIS IS WHAT I MEAN text" :p
STalKer-X_c
reosarevok_: works like a charm :* maybe there should be a combined repository for all scripts that exist? :)
ruchiranga
:D
krisalpha
hello reosarevok ,, need to ask something about adding social features to events
reosarevok_
Someone had a list somewhere in the wiki but dunno how complete it is nor where in the wiki it is :p
ruchiranga
thanks for the help :)
reosarevok_
Go ahead krisalpha
np ruchiranga :)
krisalpha
sir i am interested in this , i need to know how much perl and how much python work does it require
will it be more perl or more python ...
reosarevok_
Well, probably more perl since our site is mostly perl. But that depends on what you want to do with it. The ideas are just that, ideas - in this case we don't have a lot of clear ideas of how to do more with this
So basically you should tell us what you think would be useful and you can decide what to use for it :)
STalKer-X_c
wow great. a userscript that removes the ratings *-*
reosarevok_
GSoC is not a job, we don't give you a series of orders and say "do this" - you need to tell us what you're going to want to do
krisalpha
i was planning to use more python for it .....
is there any codebase for initial development.. and where??
STalKer-X_c
reosarevok_ actually some organisations treat it like a job :x
reosarevok_
STalKer-X_c: I know, but those are the ones who can actually afford someone being a boss :) We're too small for that, so we need the person to have more initiative than just follow orders
(because our team is way too busy to boss every GSoC student and still do their job, so the mentors help when the student has doubts but don't give straight tasks that much)
