Anybody know how picard gets the sort values for artist and albumartist? Are they downloaded with the other metadata or compiled from it on the fly?

Well, like I said, they really can't be done programmatically. You'd have to know the difference between middle names, mult-word family names and a bunch of other things.

But I dunno, maybe your needs are different. What form do you need them in?

If you want something simpler, like "just move 'the' to the end and call it good", then sure, you could do that with a script.

Actually I want to strip off the "the' completely.

I also would like to strip off the "Band" when there is a person's proper name

ie The Charlie Daniels Band -> Charlie Daniels

and format the sort fields appropriately

yeah, while that's not how MB currently does it, I agree, that's a good approach.

nowadays there are more and more mini‐LP all‐cardboard sleeves which are square

while the digipak has a square plastic tray inside — i don’t like plastic but their size is better for shelving next to jewel cases :)

You just add a new release in the same release group (and reuse the tracklist)

That is the part I am unclear on. How do I add the new release?

CJ_: select the release group where you found the digital release, and do "Add release" from there (Editing part on the right of the screen)

Digital and CD versions belong to the same release group, but often, on creation, users create a new release group with the same name

in this case, both have exact same tracklist, so no doubt

How can you tell if you are creating a new release group or not?

first tab to select the release group, last tab shows a summary of the edits that will be done

Well, multiple releases of the same album, even with bonus tracks or discs generally belongs to the same RG (release group), check guidelines: https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Release_Group
