yeah I had a issue yesterday where the wikidata showed the artist and not the actual song itself
djr013
yeah I've seen things like that
it usually means there's an issue on wikidata or wikipedia
for example, one album correctly linked to the wikidata page for that album, but the English Wikipedia link associated with that wikidata was actually a link to a redirect
so when you look at the album and it retrieves the English Wikipedia page associated with the album, it'll actually display the lede from the artist's article
dragonzeron
yeah
wait djr013 dont you edit Haruko Momoi page a lot
djr013
idk I don't recognize the name
dragonzeron
oh its a japanese anime artist
zwliew joined the channel
TehTotalPwnage
Question, what makes the difference between a cover and an arrangement?
djr013
yeah I'm not familiar with the name and it wasn't in my browser history, you might've seen me on a bunch of other japanese artists
dragonzeron
ok
MajorLurker
A cover is when somebody else is singing the song that is a "known" person
dragonzeron
maybe me and you could work together
would a remix be considered a diffrent song
MajorLurker
say the Beatles song "Help" it could be sung by any number of people but they are not the original artist so it would be a "cover"
dragonzeron
or goes under a new work or no
Lotheric
a remix is a recording, a song is a work
MajorLurker
And an arrangement was explained to yesterday... I take song A that is written for guitar and arrange it so that it can be played on a trumpet
dragonzeron
ok how about accoustic versions are they considered a new recording or a new work
TehTotalPwnage
So cover refers to vocals then and not necessarily an instrumental arrangement?
Leftmost
I think there can be instrumental covers.
I would say that covers are frequently (though not always) new arrangements in addition to being covers, but that not all covers are arrangements and not all arrangements are covers.

Usually I'd say that a cover is when someone records a song which was originally written and performed by a different artist. There aren't "covers" of John Williams scores because they're written to be performed by others, but there are covers of Nirvana songs because they were written to be performed by Nirvana. Others may have different views.
MajorLurker
I think that is a good explanation.
Leftmost
(In fact, I would say The Bad Plus's version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a cover, though it's a purely instrumental arrangement.)
TehTotalPwnage
Alright, I sort of get the idea now
It's a bit weird since on MusicBrainz, you can either create a new work and say that work is an arrangement, or just link to the original work as a cover
What would your preferences be? New work + arrangement, or link original work as cover?
MajorLurker
I would say a lot of instrumentals would be arrangements (if they take the original and make it sound like the song, for instance)
Leftmost
I would usually only make a separate arrangement work if that arrangement is significant on its own, such as an arrangement which gets used by others.
A lot of CDs of Irish traditional music will say "trad., arr. by Altan", for example, but I wouldn't make an arrangement work because no one is taking that arrangement and reusing it as-is.
MajorLurker
Yeah in that case I would just have the arranger in the relationships
TehTotalPwnage
Awesome, that clears up a lot for what I'm trying to put in then, thanks!
