I'm currently importing this release: https://cheapbeatsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/pop, and track 10 is both attributed to an artist and includes a feat. mention of the same artist. How should I enter this? (as an artist ft. themselves doesn't really make sense)
Rotab
probably just an error
it's not like that on the cd cover
elomatreb
Oh good point
I'll do it like that, thanks

I got to use MusicBrainz for a class to look at the influence of a specific artist's influence over time (specifically Queen) as measured by number of covers and who has covered them. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1zJgRq46...
I thought some data nerds (or Queen fans) might find this fun :D
All we did was count works that were not by the original artist (i.e. Queen) and were explicitly labeled as a cover
Then had some fun with how to graph and visualize the data
I love the fact that it took maybe 1-2 hours to put all of this together too

RainySky
hello everyone, I'm new to MusicBrainz. And I look forward to contributing aplenty
rdswift
As do we RainySky. ;-) Welcome to the community.
RainySky
thanks!
rdswift
And you've already found a place to ask if you have questions. You should also check out the discussion forun at https://community.metabrainz.org/ if you haven't already.

RainySky
yeah, thanks. I didn't know about the forum. I do have plenty of questions but I'll first see the pace of the channel before flooding it or so xD
I tried tagging a handful of very niche albums and the documentation overwhelmed me, lol
rdswift
No problem. If you're unsure about something don't hesitate to ask.
RainySky
thank you rdswift
SothoTalKer
the pace is generally slow, but if you have any questions, just ask away. someone will likely answer it later (:

Leo_Verto: \o/
RainySky: Hi, welcome! o/
RainySky
alright then, let me put my thoughts in order first
right out of the bat I can say that they are mostly transliteration and translation issues involving Japanese
rdswift
It may take a while because most of the major players are in Europe and India, but eventually someone will come back with a response. If you have a technical issue (e.g. something is broken on the website), best to ask in #metabrainz because that's where most of the developers hang out.
RainySky
duly noted. But I think all my issues is not knowing how to deal with edits to the database. Either I don't understand the documentation or it doesn't directly address my issues
rdswift
Okay, I can't help with the translation stuff (English only I'm afraid), but there are a few around that should be able to help. HibiscusKazeneko is one that comes to mind, but I see she's not logged in at the moment. I suggest that you go ahead and ask your specific questions (here and/or in the forum).
I think you'll find that quite a few members will gladly help someone else get started entering data. :-)
RainySky
thanks, I'm glad to hear
ok, I condensed one question I have
no, wait. Nvm. Gotta think this through
rdswift
Also, just so you know the user interface is one of the things that currently being worked on to make it more visually appealing, informative, and easier to follow. Something we all look forward to seeing.
RainySky
oh nice. Indeed!
reosarevok
RainySky: what documentation bits are you struggling with?
RainySky
mostly the transliteration and translation ones
for example, I have albums with songs that never got an official english tracklist
so they can have transliterated or translated options. I rather translated myself
but the part of making a pseudo release to input those translations makes my head hurt
especially considering those tracks can appear thorough many albums
reosarevok
A pseudo release is just a separate release
But with less info added to it
That you can then link to the original Japanese release
But yes, they map to the Japanese releases, so if you want to translate releases with different tracklists you do need different pseudoreleases
RainySky
my head just tries to find a simpler way to add a translation to the song. Like, a latin characters translated field
and precisely what you last wrote is what makes it hard to grasp for me
reosarevok
You can add a translation to a song, but that only will help to find the song in a search. It won't be copied to each album or anything, sadly
RainySky
and I think I also had the misfortune of finding a case where the same version of the song has different ids in two different albums, lol. So that might had contributed to feeling overwhelmed about it
I wish there were a way to do that. That's my biggest roadblock when trying to figure out how to contribute to some foreign releases
kinda like how it happens with artists. Most have a roman(?) spelling
is there a right place where I can suggest a simplification for translations?
reosarevok
The thing is track titles and song titles are not the same :)
For example, a song can be called "This Song", but appear on an album as "Dis Song" or something. We'd want to store the translation for the track title in the album specifically
We're planning to make it a bit simpler, by turning it into just an "alternative tracklist" for a release
But that'll take a while :)
RainySky
oh yeah I can see how that would complicate matters
reosarevok
(and will still be one for each release)
RainySky
relationships are a ***** xD
reosarevok
(just that at least it doesn't require creating *another* release as a pseudo release)
RainySky
oh thank God, that sounds just about right
but then would those alternate tracklists apply to all re-releases or just one? Cuz I could see that involving a lot of redundant data
reosarevok
I'm not sure exactly how that'd be done :)
bitmap might know

ok, a question: I have this author (3f5999c4-6647-45a1-90d6-857c667ca80b) ????, and Picard grabs his name as Kensuke Ushio. So far so good
But then I have this one (eba08bea-f9cd-4e6f-94a6-d7b0149f4676) ?????, but Picard does not grab her romanized name, Avu-chan. It grabs it in japanese characters
where do I go about editing so as to fix this?
SothoTalKer
why would u want to "fix" it?
your second artist does not have an english alias
reosarevok
Yeah, you mostly need to make sure they have English aliases (possibly set as primary for English, not sure if that's a requisite for Picard)
