I'd consider the name change artist intent, generally :)
Speaking of artist intent. What if a name was retroactively changed on digital releases but it's not easily visible (e.g. cover art). IMO historical credit should be kept but every now and then I'm having a hard time arguing: https://musicbrainz.org/edit/77508713
