Is there a way to, like...merge the recordings of two albums by medium? In this instance, merge the recordings of a compilation album with the recordings from the individual albums it compiles?
      • Erin
i mean you can ensure the tracks all reference the same actual recording in the back-end
      • reosarevok
Misty_Pond: the answer is yes either way
      • But what are you asking: "merge boxset with original discs, so that all recordings are on the compilation too" or "merge some recordings from a comp CD with their originals"?
      • (if the tracklists aren't the same, the best way is probably to just open each pair of recordings and click Merge on both - if they are the same or very close, there's a script that makes it a lot faster for large amounts )
      • Misty_Pond
the latter, I think - the compiled tracklists are all the same as the original individual cds.
      • reosarevok
        Ok
      • Misty_Pond
        thank you!
      • reosarevok
If you can't figure something out when you try it do ask :)
      • Erin
woo just passed 1000 applied edits
      • Misty_Pond
script seems to work fine up until I press the "merge all found recordings" button, then it gets stuck trying to queue the first track over and over...

Misty_Pond: did you enter a (relatively long) edit note?
      • It's unhappy otherwise
      • I forget what the limit is
      • Misty_Pond
I wrote "Duplicate recordings - merging compilation recordings with original release's." (which probably isn't great...)
      • I'll see if cutting out the first couple words changes anything
      • no, it's still trying to queue the first track and failing...
      • reosarevok
        That's probably long enough
      • (no, the problem is whether it's too *short*, I wrote it unclearly)
      • Is there anything in your console? (depending on your browser, but it's f12 for Chrome)
      • Misty_Pond
there are some things when I open the firefox console...
      • I'll try reversing the direction of the releases I'm merging, see if that changes anything
      • no, still not working -_-
      • I'm not really code-literate enough to understand much of what the console is saying, but I think it's saying there are errors in the script code preventing it from working...?
      • maybe I need to try a different *monkey app...
      • reosarevok
        Hmm
      • If you let jesus2099 know of what the console says he might be able to help
      • But for now, if you post the links I can try the merge? Maybe we broke the script recently and I haven't yet noticed :)
      • Misty_Pond
okay, so here is the compilation album: https://musicbrainz.org/release/8f390aa7-28a7-4...
      • I'm basically trying to merge the recordings into those of the individual releases linked at the bottom of the page
      • the singles are already merged, so it's just the soundtracks now

kepstin, D4RK-PH0ENiX: https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-9839 - wondering, would it be safe to assume "feat." for example should always have spaces around it in Japanese releases?
      • BrainzBot
MBS-9839: Why do join phrases not get spaces added automatically?
      • kepstin
reosarevok: hmm. I'm pretty sure i could find some counterexamples with no spaces if I look hard enough, but tbh that might be something that we should normalize anyways.
      • reosarevok
Ok - just wondering how it works for Japan :) What about spaces before and after & or after ,?
      • kepstin
that said, it should be possible to override any automatic stuff that the editor does if needed to handle unexpected special cases
      • definitely lots of cases with no spaces around & and ,
      • reosarevok
        Ok
      • kepstin
although that's partly related to common use of & and 、 instead
      • reosarevok
yes, right now & and , for example get spaces by default, but not if the editor has changed them by hand
      • People just make mistakes with that so the question was about overriding that. But IMO that's problematic, yeah
      • kepstin
i'd be ok with automatic spacing helpers, the problem is that you have to be able to turn it off or override it.
      • maybe something like having a checkbox in the artist credit editor labelled "Automatic Spacing", and if checked (default) then in the join phrase onblur it adds whitespace following some preset rules?
      • i notice we already have an onblur in the artist as credited field to trim leading/trailing whitespace, that's fine to leave on always, i think
      • (I'd also like to be able to turn off the default automatic join phrase thing that adds "," and "&" too, fwiw)
      • i guess it actually adds ", " and " & " :)
      • reosarevok
That it does. I guess the idea is that it's better to submit ", " and " & " if the user forgets to change it than "" and have all artist names show like ARTIST1ARTIST2ARTIST3
      • More stuff that looks weird so I assume it's Japan-related? :p https://tickets.metabrainz.org/browse/MBS-9834
