(I just see mess after we merge so badly... then there is album edit, radio edit, video edit and other edits merged)
      • night199uk joined the channel
      • nikki: They asked cos they want composer and other relations?
      • nikki
they apparently wanted to match tracks to mb
      • works were too broad (and often not present), recordings in their current state are too narrow
      • Jozo
nikki: They want that our "recording" includes their "radio edit" recordings?
      • reosarevok
        huh
      • nobody said radio edits should be merged with the normal recordings
      • :)
      • That's still an edit
      • Jozo
nikki: Cos we do not have promotional singles usually
      • nikki
the bbc would like that, that was the main point we disagreed on in the list of scenarios I gave them to consider
      • reosarevok
        oh, true :)
      • nikki
(the other was whether one performance recorded by two separate people is two recordings or not, but that mostly applies to live bootlegs)
      • Jozo
I do not know anything about BBC. But in Finland there is often really difference between album edit and radio edit. (And radio edits not really released... sometimes released digital media)
      • hawke
Jozo: "useful for..." -- anything, really. It defeats the purpose of recordings if every release has its own recording
      • Jozo
Is BBC give some feed to us?
      • reosarevok
        Jozo: no, money
      • (they're a customer)
      • I don't think they have a lot of useful stuff to share - they ask artists to create pages for themselves in MB, too
      • jcazevedo joined the channel
      • Jozo
reosarevok: In Finland YLE has most complete database for releases. (And they share that only partially with libraries or so)
      • reosarevok
Oh, I'm sure they have some useful data
      • Jozo
reosarevok: http://noora.yle.fi/radioarkistoweb.nsf/sivut/l... "Yleisradion äänilevystö on Suomen suurin musiikkiarkisto."
      • reosarevok
But I'm also sure it's not allowed to share it because meh industry
      • 16WAAV3DS joined the channel
      • Jozo
reosarevok: and http://www.aanitearkisto.fi/ covers somewhat that YLE archive between 1901-1999.
      • reosarevok: I still don't want that we dance with BBC without any indication that we can benefit it
      • reosarevok
        er
      • they give us the money to pay for our developers
      • if that's not benefitting, what is it?
      • Jozo
reosarevok: They wanted somethhing... We didn't what they wanted
      • reosarevok
Oh, sure, they wanted something and we separately agreed with most of it in our recordings discussion anyway
      • But the parts we don't agree with won't change
      • (when we added release groups for example it was because the BBC asked for it and we decided it was a good idea)
      • (well, "we"... I wasn't really around yet :) )
      • STalKer-X joined the channel
      • nikki
hawke: well, it's probably more useful if every release has its own recording than if releases arbitrarily do or don't have their own recordings :P
      • hawke: at least I hope so, or warp spent a load of time adding track ids for nothing :P
      • Jozo
reosarevok: I just tried say that every request has some benefit behind... (Am I say that correct way?)
      • hawke
nikki: true --- the transition is kinda messy though. :-)
      • nikki
sure, but at least we now have a goal, instead of having half the editors who care merging remasters and the other half who care splitting them
      • Jozo
        (I sent mail to YLE)
      • reosarevok
        I should mail Eesti Raadio
      • Jozo
But if I want something I have send mail to some integrator.
      • Ben|Dinner
Jozo: I certainly didn't know about the BBC issues with recordings until after the process of changing them was already started
      • reosarevok
Yeah, in this case we just happened to agree :)
      • Jozo
srotta: Onko sulla ajatuksia miten meidän pitäis hyödyntäää tai saada käyttöön YLE:n ja kirjastojen data? Kirjastot jakaa jotain vapaalla lisenssillä tosin
      • LordSputnik: (And what I said about BBC is only guess.... We do not their intenteds.
      • +know
      • (and spellling and and and)
      • hawke
nikki: did we have a lot of editors merging remasters? It seemed (and seems) so rare to see remasters clearly marked...
      • Jozo
And I'm listening some Finnish pop-rap.
      • hawke
there were like 5 bands that actually had half-finished remaster markings: the Beatles, ABBA, led Zeppelin, and Metallica...and probably some other. ;-)
      • nikki
hawke: my experience was mostly that people just gave up because of people voting no in case the recordings were different, but that doesn't stop people from reusing tracklists for remastered releases
      • the_metalgamer joined the channel
      • like I pretty much stopped even trying to merge recordings, even things I knew were the same
      • kepstin-work
the beatles stuff is a special case, because many of their remasters are actually different enough to be called different mixes (e.g. the 2-channel versions of originally mono releases)
      • hawke
yeah, the 'they might be different' crowd is so annoying ... it just paralyzes everything.
      • nikki
sometimes they have a point, when people try to merge like 20 different things all at once, it seems more like "ooh, they have the same name" and not "I checked each of these to make sure it's not live/djmixed/etc"
      • hawke
        yep
      • nikki
        but in general, yeah :/
      • STalKer-X joined the channel
      • derwin
god, I hate those beatles remasters
      • if you couldn't hear the background vocal from john for 30 years
      • why do you want to hear it now?
      • it's a different song
      • a remix, imo, not a "remaster"
      • kepstin-work
the 2-channel mixes aren't even really stereo :/
      • it's just that the vocals were recorded separately from the instruments, so they split them again
      • horrible to listen to with headphones
      • derwin
yeah, good to sample though :)

      • MOTHAFFING +++ on this
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox is one of those people
      • godamnit
      • i got things voted down because "oohh it might be different"
      • evne shit i waas like "listen too and knew isthe only version and"
      • but I got like "noo there is less or more crowd noise here!!""
      • RARG
      • i love love LOVE the bensput new recording guide
      • can we hurry up and get it passed son
      • sone*
      • soon
      • blup
      • but anyway, i will go to bed now
      • hawke
ZaphodBeeblebrox: at least with that there's an actual listen: "there is more crowd noise" is at least a difference
      • not "I haven't heard it, but it's safer to keep them separate"
      • derwin
I guess we have "mergists" vs. "safists" ?
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
but the track cut of is arbitrary and nothing to do with "reocrding"
      • which is the same
      • it's like trying to define on the original pink floyd "dark side of the moon" where does "money" end and "us and them" begin?
      • derwin
where the cd cuts it :)
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
        the origina lLP
      • derwin
        hahaha
      • yeah, nowhere.
      • mu
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
        exactly
      • saying "this is a recording and that is a recording and they have to much difference is rubbish in situiations like that
      • LordSputnik
derwin: kepstin-work: the only really bad stereo remasters are Rubber Soul and Revolver
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
so many of these old releases where made for a lp or even cassette medium, where "track cut off" was an arbitrary thing, the "cd age" made "tracks"
      • LordSputnik
both of which I've folded down to mono
      • the rest of the remasters are great imo
      • ZaphodBeeblebrox
and cd re-releases of old lps could maybe make the new track a differnce between pressings, even though the actual audio is identical and from the same master
      • it's rubbish! to keep those separate
      • reosarevok_ joined the channel
      • for releases like that.
      • i mean for new releases that where.. eh. "composed" for cd medium. that's mybe a littel differnt
      • but we lack the ting like cd-track parts
      • wichi know atleast classical releases used some
      • but yes. I am going to bed
      • ok, natta all
      • LordSputnik
        :)

Well, since vinyl tracks don't have actual defined start/finish, I see the CD as being a definitive source for that information. :-)

        hawke: which CD?
      • hawke
        derwin: presumably the first-released one.
      • derwin
hah, so successive CDs are wrong?
      • hawke
        not wrong, but different.
      • derwin
why is the first one authoritative?
      • hawke
hehe, I was just about to say: "I don't know if 'first' or 'most common' should count as more definitive"
