so I don't have to bother you with silly questions
      • kepstin-work
winstonw: it's not really that complicated, and the wiki should already have an overview of entity types...
      • hawke_1
I take it you would prefer that we called releases “albums”?
      • DrDyna
only people who owned records once upon a time call them albums, lmao
      • kepstin-work
except if they're singles, and that is really stored at the release group level, not release...
      • hawke_1
        DrDyna: Uh, no.
      • winstonw
nah I would think it would be useful to assume that new contributers do not know as much as the people who have worked on the project
      • DrDyna
        i'm just teasing.
      • winstonw
        haha, yeah
      • hawke_1
winstonw: But I mean, what should we call them?
      • (So that you would know what to search for)
      • winstonw
I'm suggesting writing in the beginners' docs what each tag is
      • kepstin-work
      • presumably we could link that page better, I guess.
      • hawke_1
      • winstonw
        cool
      • thx
      • hawke_1
        It covers it
      • reosarevok
"The term release refers to a specific issuing of an album, single, compilation, etc., and includes a specific set of recordings in a particular order. A release often has several different editions such as a digital iTunes edition, or an edition with bonus tracks; these should be entered as separate releases"
      • hawke_1
        ^
      • culinko
kepstin-work: where did you find the disambiguation comments added by the script? i can't find it :S
      • reosarevok
        From the beginners docs :)
      • winstonw
A link to the quickstart might be great
      • kepstin-work
culinko: that script puts the recording disambig. comments next to the track title in the track list
      • winstonw
        lol words
      • not to be unhelpful, but do you really expect contributers to read that much
      • kepstin-work
        winstonw: yes.
      • hawke_1
        winstonw: what’s quickstart?
      • winstonw
      • kepstin-work
(we really do expect contributors to read that much, unfortunately; we have a large list of guidelines etc. that should be followed when editing)
      • winstonw
no beginners' guide link on either page I think
      • ianmcorvidae
it's in the Documentation menu on every page
      • winstonw
        lol
      • hawke_1
This does point out a problem though: There are too many entry points to the documentation
      • ianmcorvidae
which is not necessarily good, but yeah
      • culinko
i wasted few hours reading the documentation:P
      • clicked every link tho
      • but got lost after a while
      • winstonw
sounds like you have wikipedia-itis :D (I have it too)
      • DrDyna
wikipedia-itis is a great time killer
      • winstonw
        I'm a serial time killer
      • DrDyna
i randomly find myself looking up artists when listening to tunes
      • winstonw
Sometimes I hop on 4chan's music board and listening to random artists discussed there
      • DrDyna
        hah
      • winstonw
or listening to a friend's pandora when i get the chance... always fun!
      • DrDyna
        oh, a friend's pandora, what's that site called....sec
      • awesome
      • culinko
kepstin-work: could you point me to a release with songs having disambiguation comments? i can't seem to find one though
      • winstonw
oh lol, I meant I just log into their pandora on their computer and listen lol
      • kepstin-work
culinko: they're fairly rare, yeah, lets see if I remember one...
      • hawke_1
      • Most live albums should have them
      • (not that they necessarily do)
      • kepstin-work
      • culinko
oh yeah, i see it. the script it's very handy
      • i just ran into a track with different recording name and it's in brown-redish color :)
      • hawke_1
        Yep
      • Yet another of the awesome things that script does
      • winstonw
http://musicbrainz.org/release/65e7b4b1-663f-4f... digital media; I have the two CD release. So that would be a different release all together, right? I think the track listing is a subset of the digital format release.
      • hawke_1
        Yes.

Kepstin and hawke and culinko : thanks very much :) it put pressure on me I reall y have to maintain and make it always better (the inline stuff user script) :)
      • Kepstin what do you think putting disabled acoustics after like hawke suggested ?
      • Hawke and kepstin do you think it was good to default to contracted fingerprints ?
      • kepstin-work
the disabled acoustids after makes sense to me
      • it's not like sorting them any other way is useful :)
      • jesus2099
Maybe I'll put all settings in the sidebar and remembered when I have time (and remove the classic part too)
      • Kepstin yes I let them in the order of the web service but I think I'll put the disables aft,, good idea
      • CallerNo6 joined the channel
      • Never hesitate to suggest improvements, thing that you find craps etc.
      • hawke_1
kepstin-work: I really like the contracted fingerprints

        Hawke yes ?
      • hawke_1
jesus2099: I really like the contracted acoustIDs. :-)
      • jesus2099
        Ah :)
      • Cool
      • hawke_1
It surprised me at first, but now I like it
      • So far I haven’t found any where I couldn’t tell which one I was looking for
      • I always work off the first 4 or so anyway when searching
      • (as in ctrl+f in a page)
      • jesus2099
Yes it looks strange this is why I always hesitated to default it.... But then I saw that I never need more than that to compare them
      • hawke_1
        Yep
      • systemww
this is winstonw; sorry if you spoke to me after hawke_1 said "Yes."; I didn't recieve it.
      • jesus2099
I usually use the last characters myself :)
      • kepstin-work
oh, so it contracts the hash like how git uses only the first 7 chars by default?
      • hawke_1
        kepstin-work: It’s not a hash but it does “dead…beef”
      • jesus2099
Git ? I don't know, I ,have not seen this
      • hawke_1
        first 4/last 4
      • jesus2099
        Yes, this
      • hawke_1
        with an ellipsis between
      • ianmcorvidae
git has 40-character sha1 hashes to identify commits, but by default it only shows the first 7, because that's usually enough to tell them apart
      • kepstin-work
(if there are multiple things with the same first 7 chars, it'll show more)
      • ianmcorvidae
much like acoustids are long but usually you only need a subset (first four + last four) to actually tell them apart :)
      • brian__
kepstin-work, out of curiousity, why bother to keep stuff in lossy if you also have it in lossless?
      • jesus2099
Ah ok. I had the impression both start and end were useful to me... This is why it's currently like that
      • kepstin-work
brian__: to simplify syncing my portable player
      • brianfreud
        ah
      • jesus2099
Brianfreud and I encode lossy mono for my Walkmans, I'm deaf one ear
      • brianfreud
I do it to, I just do it on the fly
      • kepstin-work
yeah, I find this to be a bit simpler; I just use rsync to copy music to my player :)
      • brianfreud
I just wouldn't have space to store lossy copies as well :P
      • jesus2099
I don't really use lossless, only for submitting fingerprints then delete. I only listen to CD and to Walkmans.
      • kepstin-work
(it's an ipod classic running rockbox)
      • brianfreud
        As it is, I'm pushing 4TB :P
      • kepstin-work
brianfreud: heh, my collection's not /that/ big :)
      • 476GMusic/Flac
      • brianfreud
actually... prob more than that; I have all the untagged stuff on a separate 3TB drive that's maybe 50% music
      • :D
      • jesus2099
I have CDS on shelves, even bigger !
      • ;)
      • brianfreud
        I used to have that
      • systemww
for the advanced search, what are the format: names
      • brianfreud
thousands of them... hard drive == far less space :D
      • even worse were all the cassettes
      • jesus2099
Did you sell everything brianfreud ?
      • kepstin-work
yeah, at least now music doesn't take up that much physical space
      • aside from the couple shelves of cds I have...
      • hawke_1
      • jesus2099

I bought some cds from the like, artist and their weird ass label
      • brianfreud
yeah, a majority; the rest of the CD originals got stolen a 5 or 6 years ago
      • derwin
        limited to 300, lol
      • kepstin-work prefers to purchase digital lossless if he can, and will get a cd otherwise :(
      • jesus2099
Lossless and the CD player and amp only takes less than Demi second to light up and play
      • derwin
but I already had the music, most of it anyway, lol
      • brianfreud
most of the cassettes were boots I'd traded for; I got better copies on etree and such, and trashed the tapes
      • :P Only physical media I still have, save a few CDs in the car, is vinyl
      • systemww
hawke_1: yes I mean the "format" tag; what values does it accept?
      • jesus2099
Brianfreud I even use a disc man from time to time... But I have problem with stereo
      • Brianfreud me few cynic no more player
      • Vynil
      • Vinyl ?
      • hawke_1
systemww: Oh. ummm…it’s the medium types, but I think you have to do something stupid with the spaces. I can never remember, nikki always has to remind me.
      • jesus2099: vinyl. :-)
      • brianfreud
makes sense; I have to have at least one ear open while I'm working, so I only ever have the earbud in the right ear; stereo-effect stuff annoys me too then
      • jesus2099
        Hawke eh :)
      • kepstin-work hates typing vinyl, he gets it wrong half the time.
      • brianfreud
hawke_1, isn't it the same values as the select in the RE?
      • hawke_1
brianfreud: Yes, but you have to quote it or do something for spaces.
      • IIRC
      • systemww
haha. yeah maybe I should contribute to the wiki
      • hawke_1
        or hyphens. I don’t remember.
      • skd5aner joined the channel
      • kepstin-work has stereo stuff on his ipod, but he uses a stereo-to-binaural filter on the sound to make it more pleasant.
