I am doing it the right way with artist credits editing, not going in and editing the release + recording

this is why I work with artist credits instead of "individual tracks" thing

Well, if he has the release, it sounds reasonable that he'd try to fix the release :p

Or maybe adding cover art that's before the move anyway

Would you place a hip hop release and a release with the instrumentals for it in the same RG, or a new one?
2012-05-19 14054, 2012
SultS
I don’t know about hip hop, but at least in other genres, yeah
2012-05-19 14002, 2012

same one, that is

(one is not a substitute for the other)
2012-05-19 14021, 2012
SultS
warp, but what if there’s a release which also has both versions in it?
2012-05-19 14009, 2012
warp
SultS: same problem as any other box set.
2012-05-19 14052, 2012
SultS
I don’t mean a box set, just a different version of the same release… like say deluxe edition
2012-05-19 14034, 2012
warp
SultS: if it you have a release A, release B, and release C which contains release A and release B. then release C is like a box set.
2012-05-19 14056, 2012
warp
SultS: are you describing a different situation?
2012-05-19 14002, 2012
warp
(I guess using "release" in the sentence above doesn't help in clearing up the confusion :)
2012-05-19 14036, 2012
SultS
I would guess that depends on the marketing… I don’t think simultanious releases of release X, release X (instrumentals), and release X + release X instrumentals make the last one similar to a box set
if release X and release X (instrumentals) are released seperately, they should go in seperate release groups. the third release contains two releases from seperate release groups, and is thus like a box set.
2012-05-19 14007, 2012
SultS
relased together, sold separately
2012-05-19 14058, 2012
warp
if they're sold seperately they're seperate releases.
2012-05-19 14011, 2012
SultS
well yes, but they are versions of the same album, except one doesn’t have the vocals
2012-05-19 14044, 2012
warp
no, they're not versions of the same album. they're different albums, one of them being based on the other.
2012-05-19 14038, 2012
warp
that's like saying a remix album is a different version of the same album.
2012-05-19 14044, 2012
warp
(which it is not :)
2012-05-19 14024, 2012
SultS
I would still say that depends on a marketing… I’ve seen 3 versions of an album that you could say are a) original versions, b) chill out versions c) both… but the main release is c
2012-05-19 14035, 2012
warp
stuff should only go in the same release group if you can substitute on release in the release group with the other, and still get largely the same experience. there should only be minor differences between release groups.
2012-05-19 14046, 2012
warp
er, between releases inside a release group.
2012-05-19 14014, 2012
warp
Tubular Bells 2003 is a good edge case here. for fans of Tubular Bells, 2003 is not a substitute for the original recording, so they would want to keep it in a separate release group.
2012-05-19 14040, 2012
warp
but for casual listeners it is obviously conceptually the same album as Tubular Bells, so it should go in the same release group.
2012-05-19 14003, 2012
SultS
really? I find 2003 to be vastly different :)
