that’s how I did it: http://musicbrainz.org/recording/67e105ee-9a14-... . original artist had lyricist and composer credits for the work, that used samples
      • hawke_
From descriptions of two of Jonathan Coulton’s songs: “That audio was actually part of a documentary that someone that I know was working on” and “I just found some audio on the internet from an old Kentucky Fried Chicken training video”
      • reosarevok
As I said, "the rest" :p
      • hawke_
But you do think that the act of arranging those sampled words is enough for “lyricist”
      • ?
      • ehrgeiz joined the channel
      • reosarevok
That's why I said "who's to be credited for the lyrics is a funnier issue"
      • I have absolutely no idea :(
      • SultS
        seems like a stretch…
      • reosarevok
        Yeah
      • kepstin
if lyricist is the person who decides which words are in the song in what order...
      • reosarevok
        Yeah too
      • And that's why it's funny! :)
      • He didn't write the lines, but he made them into the song's lyrics
      • hawke_
I would kind of question whether they’re lyrics per se at all
      • reosarevok
Well, I don't know this case
      • I'm more speaking in general
      • hawke_
        Nod
      • reosarevok laughs
      • reosarevok is reading Spanish policemen in one of the forums where they usually talk
      • reosarevok
all saying "but how will I watch series now"

      • bitmap, hi!
      • One thing
      • If an artist has zero works
      • The script keeps the "looking for works" orange text for all
      • bitmap
ah yeah I saw that too
      • reosarevok
It's not a big problem in itself, of course (although it looks funny)
      • I mostly worry about whether it's repeatedly querying MB or something
      • bitmap
        no, it's not, thankfully :)
      • reosarevok
        Oh, cool :)
      • (not that the artists stay with 0 works for long ;) )
      • bitmap
        it's fixed now
      • reosarevok
        :)
      • hawke_
bitmap: Is there any reason that the “relate checked recordings to” script doesn’t do inline search and requires an MBID?
      • bitmap
'cause I never got around to implementing that, I guess :P
      • hawke_
        Oh, OK. :-)
      • bitmap
when MBID lookups become built into the autocomplete things soon, I'll just switch it to use those
      • hawke_
Reasonable. I thought maybe you just didn’t like the idea of searching since it can give less-than-useful results (basically the same reason you did a 'link to recording by MBID' script for the release editor)
      • bitmap
yeah, I don't really find the current inline search useful in a lot of cases so that was part of it
      • hawke_
It’s somewhat useless for recordings, but much better for works and artists.
      • IMO anyway
      • bitmap
there's too many generically-titled works in rock/pop music I guess
      • hawke_
There are a lot, but they should (heh) have a lot of disambiguation comments
      • or composer/lyricist/performers, as the regular 'relate to..." search does
      • I wish that script worked on the recording search pages though
      • that would be awesome
      • bitmap
I was working on that but it got kinda impossible to test because the search page HTML was different on the test server vs. live server
      • so I had to add a bunch of conditionals
      • hawke_
        ick
      • bitmap
then I got tired and just scrapped everything :P
      • hawke_
Is it any better now that we have beta maybe?
      • bitmap
        not sure
      • Leftmost joined the channel
      • hawke_
Anyone know why the works page seems to list (composer, lyricist) and sometimes (lyricist, composer)?
      • SultS
hawke_, I think it’s the adding order that makes the difference… at least that seems to be the reason
      • reosarevok
I'm not too sure if there's a reason at all
      • hawke_
There’s obviously a reason, or it wouldn’t happen that way. :-)
      • I would assume it’s the adding order too
      • but I’m surprised that a script would not be consistent in the adding order
      • reosarevok
        Well
      • It probably is
      • hawke_
Anyone have an opinion on how to composer/lyricist mashups? Or should they not be new works at all?
      • SultS
in my case where I noticed it there were some credits already there
      • nikki_ joined the channel
      • reosarevok
But if one of the relationships can't be added at first
      • Shepard joined the channel
      • (because it gets throttled)
      • It will add it later
      • So that might cause it
      • hawke_
        Could be.
      • SultS
hawke_, I think partial performance of each work should be enough
      • reosarevok has avoided mashups
      • hawke_
        So, no new work?
      • reosarevok
        I don't know
      • I'd say it's a distinct work
      • hawke_
        me too.
      • reosarevok
But it's quite in the limit
      • hawke_
at least in many (most? cases)
      • SultS
well I would just compare them with dj mixed songs, and I wouldn’t new works there, though they usually contain some other song there as well… obviously not that big part of it
      • reosarevok
        The concept is different though
      • Like, the idea behind it
      • I might add a work, relate it as a derivative of both originals and add no relationships to the actual mashup work
      • But as I said, I am avoiding them not to have to think too much about it :p
      • hawke_
        lol
      • SultS
why not add relationship to the mashup work, if you already have created it?
      • hawke_
SultS: indeed. The question is, what relationship?
      • Does it have a composer/lyricist?
      • Are the composer/lyricist all the people who made the original works?
      • Or is it the mashup artist?
      • SultS
that’s proably on individual basis (and not always that easy to determine)
      • reosarevok
So, exactly for that reason :)
      • SultS
I would use original works people definetly, only for the part they created, if possible/known
      • hawke_
I wonder if we need some kind of 'remixer' artist-work AR.
      • That or something similar would feel right to me

hawke_: I have an album of mega-mixes which contain probably 150 original tracks per 10-12 minute track..
      • want to add to EHM BEE DOT OHRG
      • ?
      • hawke_
derwin: Not any time soon. :-)
      • SultS
would using arranger credit be incorrect for Coulton? I’ve never used it myself…
      • hawke_
        Hmm, could be.
      • I’ve used it mostly on recordings
      • What’s the consensus on stereo vs. mono recordings? Same? separate?
      • “While preparing this CD for release, Jonathan discovered that all previous releases of Code Monkey had been accidentally exported in mono. This album features the first stereo mix of the song.”
      • SultS
is there a consensus? I’d probably prefer separate
      • kovacsur
        separate
      • (that's my opinion, not a consensus)
      • hawke_
I kind of like the idea of separate, but I don’t see it working out very well in general just because it’s often hard to figure out which is which
      • SultS
I guess it’s close to same amount of hard than finding out different masters in general.
      • kovacsur
I'd say it's actually easier, since as long as you have access to the recording, you will be able to determine whether it's stereo or mono
      • you need access to at least two recordings to find out whether one is a remaster of the other
      • hawke_
kovacsur: Depends, some fake-stereo stuff I think is not as easy to detect
      • reosarevok
        Heh, it's kinda funny
      • "megaupload" is trending basically everywhere in twitter except in the UK and US
      • there? #umustbecrazy #ILovePeopleThat #IDontPlayThat
      • derwin
        ? trending in SF..
      • reosarevok
I only checked the full country ones
      • But basically, Germany, yes, Ireland, yes, Italy, yes, Spain, yes, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, yes
      • Canada, US and UK, no
      • Oh, UK is now, but because of Anon

bitmap: Is there a way to apply the attributes and dates of the to the recording ARs after they’ve been created?
      • SultS
as in update the existing AR? that would be something I would be interested as well.
