Aaaand, that's why we need a MusicBrainz player!
      • luks
or just a little smarter player that doesn't use assume "album title" == "album"
      • kepstin-laptop
rhythmbox supports the 'albumsort' tag, so I use musicbrainz tagger script to stick the release date and some other info in there for disambiguation.
      • nikki
bitmap: I wonder if those problems that popped up are the same as what some people kept reporting (with picard just stopping loading stuff)
      • bitmap
nikki: yeah, I'm wondering that. it's possible those issues still could've surfaced from time to time even with the timers in place
      • I'm gonna try to investigate that more today :)
      • hawke_
Is there any guideline for how to do a collaboration when there is just a list of artists separated by line break rather than "&" or something?
      • kepstin-laptop
hawke_: in that case, just use the default joiners.
      • hawke_
kepstin-laptop: I’m inclined to use / actually, especially in cases where one of the artists is “Foo & Bar”
      • But I was just wondering if there was an official guidelines.
      • nikki
that would have been my other suggestion
      • not that I know of
      • hawke_
        k
      • reosarevok
How would you credit a choral with a Biblical text?
      • "lyricist: [anon]"?
      • "lyricist: St. Luke"?
      • derwin
        [jebus]
      • gioele joined the channel
      • nikki
        god :P
      • luks
and an AR "St. Luke" was inspired by "God"
      • nikki
        haha
      • luks
I think used to have God in the DB, didn't we?
      • nikki
and god would clearly need a comment to distinguish it from all the non-christian gods out there
      • reosarevok
You blasphemers and heretics, give me a serious answer! :p
      • nikki
        :P
      • hawke_
        reosarevok: anon or unknown…
      • reosarevok
        Meh
      • I'd use [biblical text] as a credit for [unknown]
      • But we don't have them for rels :(
      • nikki
[biblical text] is what it is, not who wrote it :P
      • reosarevok
        :p
      • Ok, I could use "St. Luke (yeah, sure)" as a credit for [unknown]
      • :p
      • _5moufl has left the channel
      • tungolcraft
        you could credit the translator
      • reosarevok
tungolcraft: I don't know the translation either
      • (I don't have the lyrics, just the versicle indication)
      • Wizzcat
        Odd, I'm unable to approve http://musicbrainz.org/edit/14859849 :/
      • reosarevok
Wizzcat: there's something weird with the artist credit
      • Wizzcat
true, is the edit crediting the same group twice?
      • reosarevok
        No idea
      • bitmap: ping
      • Wizzcat
oh well, I'll just file it
      • bitmap
        yes
      • reosarevok
bitmap: isn't the "relate several recordings to a work at the same time" script in userscripts?
      • bitmap
reosarevok: it's not on userscripts.org if that's what you mean
      • reosarevok
        Yeah, I meant that
      • bitmap
        do you need it? :)
      • reosarevok wanted the last version
      • okay
      • reosarevok
(there was a new version with attributes, wasn't there?)
      • bitmap
        yeah
      • reosarevok
Could you do the same for works?
      • Only relating them to another work, using the "part of" attribute
      • *"has part" rel
      • derwin
is there a "remixed by" script ?
      • bitmap
      • reosarevok
Why not upload it with the rest?
      • reosarevok imagines it would be simpler
      • bitmap
I dunno, maybe I don't trust people enough with making batch edits :P
      • reosarevok
Hmm, isn't it only an autoedit for autoeditors?
      • bitmap
        yes, but still
      • reosarevok: it's possible to make a similar script for works, but it hasn't been done yet
      • reosarevok
        I know
      • That's why I asked for it :)
      • reosarevok has linked several "24 etudes" pieces to the main work and wants to die
      • bitmap
        maybe I'll write one later
      • reosarevok
        :)
      • nikki
        grr
      • reosarevok waits until tomorrow to keep editing classical
      • reosarevok
        nikki: who did what now?
      • nikki
        smilies on jira :/
      • reosarevok
        Doesn't sound that terrible
      • nikki
they didn't used to be there :(
      • nikki just backspaced the one she was going to enter
      • bitmap
what, it converts them to graphics now?
      • nikki
        yes
      • big obnoxious yellow ones :P
      • bitmap
        ew
      • very big, they're twice the regular line height for me o_O
      • nikki
        yeah, same
      • and my fonts are huuuge
      • (well, ok, not that big, but I still have a minimum font size of like 13 whateverunits)
      • kepstin-laptop could imagine that with the new NGS artist credits, it could make sense to have a 'Show releases by this artist only' on the artist page :/
      • kepstin-laptop
      • luks
I should really upgrade this laptop :(
      • kepstin-laptop
huh. the 'update artist credits on this release' thing doesn't appear to work properly when you change the number of artists in the artist credit.
      • kepstin-laptop goes back and forth between release editor tabs, poking at it, until it does the right thing.
      • reosarevok
        How does it fail?
      • kepstin-laptop
reosarevok: I went from a 4-artist to 5-artist artist credit. in the preview at the end, the change to the release artists was missing the last artist. The track updates were all correct.
      • it's possible to go back to the first page and relink the artists to get it to work :/.
      • reosarevok
        Oh
      • Yep
      • I've seen that
      • Also the one where split albums show 2 artist credits for all tracks, the second being an empty line
      • kepstin-laptop
http://musicbrainz.org/release/f72b7bb2-4196-4e... - I managed to do the last 2 edits on this release in one go on the release editor :)
      • reosarevok
(2 or more, depending on the amount of release artists)
      • kepstin-laptop
that was tricky to work around the... quirks... or the release editor.
      • by the time I'm done, most of the tracks on that release will have artist credits linking to 8 artists :/
      • bitmap
this file loading issue in Picard is making very little sense :/ it's definitely a bug in the threading code, but very hard to narrow down
      • hawke_
Blah, why does a “Add Various Artists” edit feel the need to fill in “Various Artists” on every track credit?
      • ianmcorvidae
        you mean that isn't what you wanted? ;
      • )
      • kepstin-laptop
yeah, it would be rather better if it left them blank and wouldn't allow you to submit until you put something in :/
      • hawke_
Furthermore, why does it force it to that artist and make it an Artist Credit instead of adding it as a new entity if I fill in a new artist there?
      • hawke_ murders the release editor.
      • ianmcorvidae
the release editor has too much magic and too little functionality
      • has been my opinion all along :P
      • kepstin-laptop
hawke_: that sounds like a bug... and since nobody's subscribed to 'various artists' there's probably a bunch of those sneaking in :/
      • hawke_ heads to JIRA
      • ianmcorvidae
well, nikki ended up subscribed to various artists at one point, but :P
      • hawke_
      • kepstin-laptop suspects that if http://tickets.musicbrainz.org/browse/MBS-809 is fixed, the world would be much happier
      • ianmcorvidae
        heh
      • ianmcorvidae ponders writing an edit API, getting it shipped, and then writing a completely different interface :P
      • reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: the only way of fixing that would be killing the release editor
      • oh, wait
      • kepstin-laptop
        reosarevok: sounds good.
      • reosarevok
        now I see
      • kepstin-laptop
        when can you start?
      • ianmcorvidae
        +1 from me :P
      • reosarevok
ianmcorvidae: we need a classical interface
      • So please do
      • ianmcorvidae
        haha
      • reosarevok
And then write that one too
      • ianmcorvidae
of course the problem is the whole edit system really needs to be redone so any edit API would become obsolete as soon as that happened :/
      • hawke_
        reosarevok: A “classical interface”?
      • reosarevok
        hawke_: yeah
      • ianmcorvidae
one that doesn't make editing classical things tedious and annoying
      • reosarevok
        That
      • (it could be read as "an interface like classic MB"… which could work too :P )
      • But I meant what ian said
      • ianmcorvidae
y'know, manually making a work for every single recording, doing all the relations, fixing all the automatic artist credits, etc.
      • kepstin-laptop notes that most of the things added for a 'classical MB editor' would be just as useful for non-classical stuff :/
      • this is true
      • derwin
I just want to be able to add url relationships at creation time
      • instead of clicking all around :/
      • ianmcorvidae
yeah, that would also be a good improvement
      • amusing that we're talking about lots of things to _add_ to the release editor just as we talk about hating the release editor :P
      • hawke_
I think everything that would be useful in a “classical interface” would be just as nice in a standard interface
      • Oh wait, kepstin-laptop already said that
      • ianmcorvidae
        hehe
      • hawke_
        almost word for word
      • reosarevok
hawke_: I doubt most people would need a "create parent work for all these parts" thingy
      • Or an "order by Op. #" thingy
      • hawke_
reosarevok: Yeah, but creating works for things is already plenty tedius and annoying
      • *tedious
      • parent works are dead simple in comparison
      • reosarevok
        hawke_: bitmap's script S2
      • hawke_
I’d much rather have an interface like the recording editor only for works…
