#musicbrainz

/

      • reosarevok would love it, combined with a script to set languages
      • reosarevok is clearly not going to use the RE on a thousand releases in a row
      • reosarevok
I value the little sanity I have left
      • kepstin-laptop
hmm. signwriting isn't in unicode, and requires special support to display symbols in the spacially correct place, so musicbrainz couldn't easily support it :/
      • nikki
it needs vertical text, so that rules out everything except IE, doesn't it?
      • reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: we can't even support Hebrew correctly
      • So… not surprising
      • kepstin-laptop
        ‏testing something.
      • hmm.
      • w/e, that didn't do anything useful :)
      • reosarevok thinks ruaok should spend some money on a MB tent in Tahrir and recruit Arabic speaking editors
      • CatCat
        what about braille?
      • nikki
        braille is in unicode
      • CatCat agrees
      • CatCat
        any releases rih braille?
      • kepstin-laptop
        ⠫⠣
      • CatCat
        with*
      • kepstin-laptop picked a couple random symbols
      • ianmcorvidae
CatCat: starting up my server to check, but I'd guess not
      • CatCat idly wonders if unown scitp is/could ever be a part of unicode
      • nope, none in braille
      • CatCat
        hn
      • nikki
        doubt it
      • ianmcorvidae
as of my dump, which is admittedly a few weeks old, but still
      • ruaok promises reosarevok to get right on that
      • CatCat
there must exist atleast one release with braille tracklist
      • reosarevok
CatCat: I'm sure there is, find it and add it :D
      • nikki imagines it won't be a jewel case
      • Maybe a cardboard sleeve
      • CatCat
it's like rule 34 of musicbrainz.. if yo ucan think it ther is a tracklist with those symbols
      • reosarevok
Oh, crap, we don't support those! :D
      • ianmcorvidae
      • kepstin-laptop should add a braille-transliterated pseudo-release of something, just for fun :)
      • nikki
        tsk
      • nikki doesn't approve of "just for fun" pseudo-releases
      • CatCat does.. a little
      • CatCat
        bah
      • CatCat doesn't think it counts
      • ianmcorvidae
the script isn't braille, so no
      • CatCat
      • :(
      • ahh
      • bed time for me. natta all
      • ianmcorvidae
nikki: am I right that you're one of the people who cares about the rate-of-change graph stuff?
      • nikki
        yes
      • ianmcorvidae
        okay
      • so
      • should I do that as a second graph, showing the rates of change for everything that's selected on the main graph
      • or should I put it into the same graph, and have there be two checkboxes per entity/line?
      • nikki
        hm...
      • I would probably say the latter right now, but I guess I wouldn't really know unless I played with it
      • ianmcorvidae
(the former being much easier, of course, but the latter provides more flexibility... the question is if the scales will match up nicely)
      • nikki
(and we haven't had rate of change graphs since all graphs were separate)
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah, I know
      • nikki
so it's not like I have any previous experience to think about
      • I think luks also wanted them
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah
      • I guess the question is what would you want to compare rates of change _with_
      • reosarevok
ianmcorvidae: you know what we need?
      • A timeline graph for the number of entities we have graphs for!
      • :D
      • ianmcorvidae
        haha
      • nikki
I think I wouldn't really be comparing it with anything
      • ianmcorvidae
        hm, okay
      • that suggests putting it on a second graph
      • since that's easier to implement :P
      • luks
yes, I definitely wanted them :)
      • second graph makes sense, because the scales are totally different
      • ianmcorvidae
okay, sounds good to me :)
      • nikki
kepstin-laptop: btw, are you going to send an rfv for the homepage thing?
      • you got your +1 after all
      • ruaok
fuck. ran out of diskspace on the VM again. :-(
      • tungolcraft
ianmcorvidae: you could also just add a single checkbox that toggles between normal and rate of change views
      • ianmcorvidae
tungolcraft: that's fundamentally the same as making two graphs
      • tungolcraft
        yeah
      • ianmcorvidae
as far as what I'm doing right now goes
      • I can easily do that later :P
      • tungolcraft
        interface issue
      • warp joined the channel
      • ruaok goes hunting for fudz
      • hawke_
Heh, I wonder what name is the most common in MB.
      • kepstin-laptop
        artist name?
      • hawke_
There are apparently 7 david campbells
      • yeah
      • kepstin-laptop needs to find a better way of pushing music to his stereo system.
      • kepstin-laptop
my WD Live HD Plus box is nice, but it doesn't scrobble ;)
      • hawke_
        heh
      • reosarevok
hawke_: check for John Williams, there are also a lot
      • (if you mean people names)
      • If band names do, Void for example has lots
      • VxJasonxV
        kepstin-laptop, SqueezeServer
      • reosarevok
kepstin-laptop: someone make my vinyl player scrobble
      • kepstin-laptop
hmm. I wonder if this WD box can play the mp3 stream from that
      • reosarevok: using a microphone and echoprints?
      • :)
      • maybe chromaprints would work too, if you used a line-in
      • nikki
angel and nemesis both have 22 artists
      • alex and eclipse both have 20...
      • paul smith and john davis look like the most common proper names with 13 each
      • (followed by james brown and john williams both with 12...)
      • reosarevok
        nikki: is that diacritic-dependant?
      • nikki
        yes
      • reosarevok
        Ok
      • nikki
        that's identical names
      • reosarevok
Then there are more Angel than that if you ignore diacritics
      • :)
      • (and probably one more Nemesis)
      • kepstin-laptop knows of at least one japanese transcription of eclipse, as well
      • kepstin-laptop
hmm. looks like I can't use the WD TV Live box as a squeezebox client without rooting it :/
      • at which point I might as well just install mpd and scrobble natively ;)
      • hawke_
Jesus christ the basic editor is SLOOW
      • reosarevok
        hawke_: isn't everything?
      • hawke_
        reosarevok: eh?
      • reosarevok
like, everything in the RE is slow, isn't it?
      • Not only the basic tracklist
      • hawke_
Oh. No, it’s fine if you use the advanced editor.
      • And I don’t mind if a page takes awhile to load
      • but when a simple text editor takes tens of seconds to display text I type?
      • That’s bad.
      • reosarevok
hawke_: that's because it's not a simple text editor
      • Which it *should* be
      • hawke_
        reosarevok: Depends on perspective. :-)
      • reosarevok
It's to a simple text form what MS Word to a text editor
      • hawke_
        hah
      • reosarevok
It tries to do too much too cleverly and it doesn't help
      • reosarevok thinks he lacks a Clippo though
      • hawke_
I’ll disagree there, given that it doesn’t do anything clever at all. :-p
      • I mean, yeah, there’s a little bit of parsing to generate the preview on the right
      • reosarevok
        Yeah, that's what I mean
      • hawke_
But as far as I can tell it must do it much too often and must be doing something ridiculously badly.
      • it can’t be that hard to split on a dash, can it? :-p
      • (and drop a number off the first position, if appropriate)
      • reosarevok
hawke_: what it does ridiculously badly is parsing all the time instead of waiting for you to tell it "ok, now go and parse"
      • hawke_
Even if it parses on every keystroke, split("-") is *not* that heavy-duty.
      • And yeah, it needs to do a bit more than that, I’m sure.
      • kepstin-laptop just doesn't ever use the basic editor at all
      • I honestly don’t understand why the basic editor exists as such
      • kepstin-laptop
copy/pasting field by field from a text tracklisting is less frustrating.
      • reosarevok does, for parsing
      • reosarevok
        But that's why I want a parser
      • Not this :)
      • hawke_
reosarevok: Yeah, I’d rather have the advanced editor by default
      • and then have a “import from text" feature which brings up the “basic” editor.
      • kepstin-laptop
you know what someone should make? a userscript that adds an optionally viewable parser box to the advanced editor, then fills in the fields from it when you hit parse :)
      • reosarevok would like having the basic editor as default for adds, and the advanced for edits
      • I wonder if you can read from the clipboard in javascript nowadays - if so, it could just be a single button "parse from clipboard"
      • reosarevok
        kepstin-laptop: no, it couldn't
      • bandcamp, itunes, etc give you the data formatted in lots of lines
