I'm just getting "This merge strategy is not applicable to the releases you have selected."
2011-05-17 13751, 2011
aeontech
when i try to merge
2011-05-17 13757, 2011
nikki
someone already reported that
2011-05-17 13704, 2011
nikki
including flamingspinach a few lines up ;)
2011-05-17 13712, 2011
aeontech
reported it being confusing?
2011-05-17 13712, 2011
ruaok
hi aeontech
2011-05-17 13717, 2011
aeontech
or not working?
2011-05-17 13720, 2011
reosarevok
not working
2011-05-17 13722, 2011
aeontech
ok
2011-05-17 13727, 2011
aeontech
well the ui is terrible :)
2011-05-17 13746, 2011
aeontech
if i was a new user, I would have no idea what "This merge strategy will merge all mediums together into a single set of mediums." could possibly mean
2011-05-17 13747, 2011
reosarevok
Well, it seems you got the idea right, it should just work
2011-05-17 13759, 2011
aeontech
even as an old-timer I have only a faint guess as to what it's going to do
2011-05-17 13703, 2011
aeontech
hehe
2011-05-17 13714, 2011
aeontech
hey ruaok :)
2011-05-17 13716, 2011
reosarevok
aeontech: agreed, although new users probably won't be merging part-of-set things
2011-05-17 13706, 2011
aeontech
ruaok: babysitting the migration?
2011-05-17 13715, 2011
ruaok
the migration is done.
2011-05-17 13729, 2011
ruaok
now just watching the logs for errors and fixing them or reporting them.
2011-05-17 13738, 2011
flamingspinach
yeah, why are they called "mediums" instead of "parts" or something?
2011-05-17 13743, 2011
ruaok
we have a meeting about 3 hours to decide to go live or else
2011-05-17 13703, 2011
flamingspinach
when you say "a release has multiple mediums" I would think it to mean that it was released on CD, vinyl, and MP3 or something like that
2011-05-17 13714, 2011
flamingspinach
not that there were three discs
2011-05-17 13733, 2011
aeontech
ah nice
2011-05-17 13746, 2011
aeontech
flamingspinach: yeah exactly
2011-05-17 13712, 2011
nikki
I would use discs, but then people complain because they're not always discs :/
2011-05-17 13714, 2011
aeontech
flamingspinach: plus not having the disc title above each tracklisting makes it impossible to tell which disc is first at a glance
2011-05-17 13729, 2011
flamingspinach
nikki: how's "parts"? it's not being used for anything else, is it?
2011-05-17 13741, 2011
aeontech
nikki: i'd take people complaining at expense of clarity for 95% of use cases :)
2011-05-17 13753, 2011
nikki
aeontech: I would too, but it's not my decision :/
2011-05-17 13756, 2011
aeontech
hehe
2011-05-17 13708, 2011
reosarevok
flamingspinach: yeah, for tracks which are several parts ;)
2011-05-17 13716, 2011
nikki
parts also sounds like volumes
2011-05-17 13725, 2011
nikki
like if you release something in three parts
2011-05-17 13736, 2011
aeontech
hm
2011-05-17 13752, 2011
reosarevok doesn't think "release" is an obvious word either, and it works
2011-05-17 13700, 2011
aeontech
well if we know what the medium is, (ie, release medium is a cd), we just say merge these discs, if it's tapes, we say merge these tapes, etc.
2011-05-17 13709, 2011
reosarevok
(well, it kinda is now, definitely not in the previous MB)
2011-05-17 13740, 2011
aeontech
i mean we had (disc 1) in the title before, not (medium 1)
2011-05-17 13747, 2011
aeontech
and nobody was complaining about that
2011-05-17 13759, 2011
aeontech
or at least i don't imagine anybody would be
2011-05-17 13746, 2011
nikki
aeontech: oh, some people did
2011-05-17 13758, 2011
aeontech
ha
2011-05-17 13706, 2011
aeontech
(as an aside, "merge these mediums" scans really oddly... if you want to stick with medium i'd change it to "merge these media".)
2011-05-17 13718, 2011
aeontech
i guess people will complain about anything :)
2011-05-17 13721, 2011
nikki prefers mediums :P
2011-05-17 13724, 2011
aeontech
hehe
2011-05-17 13731, 2011
aeontech
at least we don't have to contend with deletionists like wikipedia does
2011-05-17 13732, 2011
aeontech
thank god
2011-05-17 13748, 2011
aeontech
"This album is not notable enough to be in musicbrainz"
2011-05-17 13752, 2011
reosarevok goes remove 50 non-notable releases
2011-05-17 13752, 2011
aeontech
i can just imagine
2011-05-17 13700, 2011
nikki
grr, wikipedia
2011-05-17 13738, 2011
nikki
although it mostly seems to be the english one
2011-05-17 13750, 2011
aeontech
ruaok: so is editing enabled, I can add releases and such on ngs.mb now?
2011-05-17 13700, 2011
reosarevok
aeontech: if you dare…
2011-05-17 13703, 2011
ruaok
yep.
2011-05-17 13708, 2011
aeontech
ok
2011-05-17 13718, 2011
ruaok
reosarevok: come cut us a break. its not *that* bad.
2011-05-17 13725, 2011
reosarevok
:)
2011-05-17 13729, 2011
aeontech
oh, so how does the new "Artist vs Artist" and so on track credits work now?
2011-05-17 13735, 2011
reosarevok will say he added 2 without problems
2011-05-17 13745, 2011
nikki failed to add one :/
2011-05-17 13757, 2011
reosarevok will also say, though, that they were all 1-disc, 1-artist
2011-05-17 13758, 2011
aeontech
i heard something vaguely about not having to create collaboration artists with 1 track to their name any longer
2011-05-17 13708, 2011
aeontech
is that in this release, or still in planning?
2011-05-17 13712, 2011
reosarevok
It is here
2011-05-17 13750, 2011
reosarevok
(you have to use the arrows by the artist if it is for release, and I'm actually not sure how it works in the basic tracklist for tracks because I just use the advanced one)
2011-05-17 13711, 2011
aeontech
what order is date field in now?
2011-05-17 13716, 2011
aeontech
yyyy-mm-dd or yyyy-dd-mm?
2011-05-17 13721, 2011
aeontech
there's no hint
2011-05-17 13732, 2011
reosarevok reported that
2011-05-17 13738, 2011
reosarevok
Same as it was
2011-05-17 13744, 2011
aeontech
k
2011-05-17 13726, 2011
flamingspinach
does anyone use yyyy-dd-mm?
2011-05-17 13736, 2011
nikki
not that I know of
2011-05-17 13702, 2011
reosarevok
flamingspinach: probably not, but we use dd-mm-yyyy and I this order always confused me
2011-05-17 13711, 2011
reosarevok
Having it clearly stated never hurts
2011-05-17 13731, 2011
nikki
ages ago I wrote some simple js thing that tries to parse any (numeric) date you give it
2011-05-17 13736, 2011
nikki
but it didn't make it into ngs :/
2011-05-17 13743, 2011
reosarevok
(especially because at the moment the fields are not length-limited either, so you can enter 4 numbers anywhere)
2011-05-17 13748, 2011
reosarevok
(it will complain, but you can)
2011-05-17 13755, 2011
aeontech
ack
2011-05-17 13759, 2011
aeontech
what happened to the track parser
2011-05-17 13709, 2011
reosarevok
Everything is the track parser now
2011-05-17 13719, 2011
reosarevok
Just paste the tracklist where it says tracklist
2011-05-17 13738, 2011
aeontech
there is no field for tracklist in advanced editor
Bah. What are the guidelines if a band changes its name at some point? Especially if their old material is re-released under the new name at a later date.
ok, another question, what about when it's Track (Artist Remix) - Another Artist
2011-05-17 13739, 2011
aeontech
do I add the remixing artist in the "artist credit" field as secondary?
2011-05-17 13747, 2011
reosarevok
AFAIK that didn't change, it keeps being attributed to another artist
2011-05-17 13705, 2011
aeontech
k
2011-05-17 13709, 2011
reosarevok
And you add Artist as a remixer (at the recording level)
2011-05-17 13718, 2011
aeontech
hm ok
2011-05-17 13720, 2011
reosarevok
(I think it was recording level)
2011-05-17 13721, 2011
Leftmost
Hmm. The specific example I'm looking at is American Nightmare, who later changed their name to Give Up the Ghost. So should all of their releases be placed under Give Up the Ghost, with albums (e.g. "Background Music") released under American Nightmare with that artist credit? And then what about re-releases of Background Music using the name Give Up the Ghost?
2011-05-17 13723, 2011
aeontech
let me try
2011-05-17 13757, 2011
reosarevok
Leftmost: How many releases did they make as AN?
2011-05-17 13707, 2011
reosarevok
Most of them? A couple?
2011-05-17 13751, 2011
reosarevok
Leftmost: normally, I'd say yeah, put all under GUtG and use AN as artist credit for those
2011-05-17 13709, 2011
Leftmost
Well, there are a number of 7" released under both names, with one full-length album released under either one.
