And the "View aliases" link on the right shows aliases for a totally unrelated label.

I’m looking for an opinion: Would it be unreasonable to add the items from http://sites.google.com/site/sxswtorrent/ as albums? Not that I’m going to because they’re just too huge (~1000 tracks) but curious what people think.

hmm, and does MB allow albums with that many tracks anyway?
Mostly I object to the “For music written for the soundtrack, Artist should contain the composer...” because “written for the soundtrack” is not specific (is that the composer or the lyricist?)

Unfortunately there’s not a clear-cut way to define who’s the primary artist on a track.

Unless you divide into (vague?) "Pop" and "classical"
2010-05-18 13808, 2010

which is no better than “written for”
2010-05-18 13847, 2010

Though that’s pretty much what people really care about
2010-05-18 13856, 2010

pop gets the performer, classical gets the composer.

there was a mailing list quagmire about this
2010-05-18 13841, 2010

Maybe it needs to be brought up on the mailing list.

So more people can argue about it. :-)

i don't know where the idea of killing the Artist field is right now, but if i can't push edit #12509711 through, i back it 110%

ridiculous that people will vote differently just because the release type says Single and not Soundtrack.

I agree, Artist should go away...but only if there’s a way to get an alternative
2010-05-18 13821, 2010

(e.g. marking one of the ARs as “Primary”—but that doesn’t solve the problem anyway.

Ideally, and this is just my idea and totally not implementable in real life, each user could choose one (or more?) ARs as the primary artist, and whatever AR had the most selections would be displayed.
2010-05-18 13858, 2010
neothe0ne
totally implementable in real life
2010-05-18 13814, 2010

modify picard to ask user if they want to use Vocal performance or composition as the artist
2010-05-18 13831, 2010
neothe0ne
it already retrieves ars
2010-05-18 13834, 2010
hawke_
neothe0ne: yeah, but it should be stored in MB, I think.

To pick a default
2010-05-18 13854, 2010
neothe0ne
that would defeat the purpose of doing away with the artist field
2010-05-18 13806, 2010
neothe0ne
we'd again get into a debate of "but the release artist should be the track artist"
2010-05-18 13817, 2010
hawke_
Yes.
2010-05-18 13827, 2010
hawke_
but Picard would then do the right thing for everyone with a login
2010-05-18 13836, 2010
hawke_
and without a login, most of the time.
2010-05-18 13821, 2010

For this example, the “KPLECRAFT and 伊藤賢治” artist would get selected twice, and “長谷川明子” would get selected four times or so...
2010-05-18 13828, 2010
hawke_
and for you and I using Picard to tag this, it would know we preferred the composer, and for fatih et al. it would know they preferred the performer-who-didn’t-perform-it...
2010-05-18 13813, 2010
hawke_
and for everyone not logged in in Picard or who had not specified a preferred AR, they’d get the 長谷川明子 as the artist tag since it was selected more by others.
2010-05-18 13848, 2010
hawke_
Theoretically possible in real life
2010-05-18 13853, 2010
hawke_
But not likely to happen.
2010-05-18 13804, 2010
hawke_
The only other way to do away with the artist field, would be to tell picard "always use composer" or "always use performer" which gets it wrong a lot of the time
2010-05-18 13835, 2010
hawke_
and you could solve it for soundtracks by giving picard a rule for the releaseattribute, but that doesn’t solve it for classical.
