hi, how do i add an artist that has a "feat."? :p
      • i mean if a track has ABC feat. XYZ, should i just choose ABC as artist or create ABC feat. XYZ as new artist? ;x
      • ianmcorvidae
      • in short: put the (feat. XYZ) (in that format) on the track title
      • and choose ABC as the track artist
      • STalKer-Y
so ABC - track (mix) (feat. XYZ)
      • ianmcorvidae
that's right according to Featuring Artist Style, yes
      • STalKer-Y
        ok :)
      • ianmcorvidae
check remix style as well, if it's also a remix: http://musicbrainz.org/doc/Remix_Style
      • STalKer-Y
how about this: AB & CD vs. WX & YZ
      • ianmcorvidae
      • it depends what the 'vs.' means in the context of the particular song
      • STalKer-Y
        complicated :D
      • ianmcorvidae
well, vs. is used to mean a bunch of different things (among them featuring artists, which you just asked about!)
      • STalKer-Y
        yeah, i know :-)
      • ianmcorvidae: Armand Van Helden & Horse, The vs. Cevin Fisher & Jason Jinx - Ghetto House Groove (Original Version)
      • as an example :x
      • ianmcorvidae
yeah; I couldn't tell you without knowing the song -- you'll have to decide what's the proper way to do it based on the recommendation on the Versus Style page I linked before :)
      • STalKer-Y
just want to rule out all possibilities ;x
      • well, an entry can be changed... o_o

hey, nikki, congrats on your new position :)
      • nikki
        thanks :)
      • STalKer-Y
how long does it usually takes until someone votes on a release? ;D
      • ruaok
faster if you ask people here to help yhou vote. :)
      • STalKer-Y
        lol
      • ruaok
        not kidding.
      • we ask each other to vote on things plenty of times.
      • STalKer-Y
i just hope that my additions don't disappear if no one votes o_o
      • ruaok
and if everyone helps out a bit it works fine.
      • STalKer-Y
adding a release is default? :p
      • ruaok
        yes.
      • STalKer-Y
ah, then i have much time :)
      • if no one votes it will accepted ;D
      • kepstin
STalKer-Y, yeah. I think that used to be different, way back in ancient history, but there are areas of the database that few people look at.
      • nikki
it's always been accepted by default while I've been here
      • kepstin
hmm. I'm somewhat forgetful, I think it used to be different...
      • STalKer-Y
        mhh
      • kepstin
I could very well be wrong :)
      • ruaok
nikki is right. always been that way.
      • its one of the basic ideas behind MB. Continual improvement.
      • Get into the DB as long as matches a reasonable standard of quality. Then improve later.
      • kepstin
huh. /everything/ is default-expire on 'high' data quality?
      • I guess that's ok if you set it on something where a lot of people check regularly and vote
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah
      • kepstin
        er, default-reject*
      • ruaok nods
      • nikki
        yep
      • ianmcorvidae
I mean, how much stuff is set to High anyway?
      • nikki
        not much
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah
      • nikki
      • ruaok
mainly things that kept getting wrongly edited.
      • white album, black album...
      • nikki
        only 58 artists and 1441 releases :o
      • kepstin
        a whole 0% of arists :)
      • ruaok
        sounds about right.
      • ianmcorvidae
I'm surprised there's more low than high, though
      • kepstin
i'm surprised there's not more low
      • ruaok
perhaps we should fix the terminology to suit the usage?
      • ianmcorvidae
what situations do people demote things to 'low' in?
      • ruaok
        crappy data.
      • kepstin
but I don't ever bother setting anything to low, because normal is default-accept anyways.
      • ianmcorvidae
but as kepstin says, default is usually quite sufficient when there's crappy data :)
      • STalKer-Y
how many edits are there a day? o_o
      • ruaok
the best suggestion I've seen is marking new releases that get no votes and that still getr added to the DB as low.
      • nikki
I never change the data quality, I set something to high once and all I succeeded in doing was hindering my own editing when new relationships and features got added :P
      • ruaok
        nikki: ha!
      • I think our use of quality is something we ought to have a long hard review of. now that've used it.
      • nikki
        I agree
      • ruaok repeats the mantra
      • ianmcorvidae
        yeah
      • ruaok
        not until after NGS
      • ianmcorvidae
        haha
      • ruaok shoud teach MBChatLogger the mantra
      • nikki
it gets on my nerves when I make some tiny edit to a url (usually wikipedia moving pages all the bloody time), but it's attached to a high quality release so I need four votes on it... but I can remove a default release with all its relationships and isrcs and puids and stuff from the db in just three votes
      • ianmcorvidae
I must not propose major changes before NGS; proposing such changes is the mind-killer; proposing them is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will let the urge to propose major changes pass over me and through me, and when it passes only my dedication to MB will remain ;)
      • kepstin
STalKer-Y, looks like around 6000ish edits per day, based on http://musicbrainz.org/show/stats/timeline.html
      • STalKer-Y
        NGS? :D
      • nikki
ngs is the next server release
      • ianmcorvidae
      • :
      • :)
      • STalKer-Y
        ah~
      • kepstin
STalKer-Y, feel free to poke around on http://test.musicbrainz.org to see how it's going
      • ianmcorvidae
        lots of improvements, etc.
      • STalKer-Y
        i'm just new :<
      • nikki
we were all new once :)
      • ianmcorvidae
'tis fine, I was new as of perhaps a month ago :P
      • now I can link-quote with the best of them ;)
      • kepstin
hmm. apparently I created my account back in 2004. I feel old now ;)
      • ianmcorvidae
        hehe
      • nikki
you created it three days before me iirc
      • ianmcorvidae

      • you verified your email on 2005-02
      • nikki
haha, I know my own mb birthday
      • ianmcorvidae
        verified versus joined :)
      • kepstin
        :P
      • ruaok
        nikki: you joined before that.
      • in 2004. I just looked it up. :)
      • kepstin
it just happens that I verified my email on the same day I created my account.
      • nikki
yeah, I corrected my typo on the next line
      • ruaok notes he should read better
      • ruaok
        any other wisdom for chatlogger?
      • ianmcorvidae
heh, my join versus my verification is like 2.5 years, but I guess there was probably an email change in there
      • kepstin
it took me about a minute and 30 seconds to verify my email, lol
      • nikki
I changed my email address... I remember I had it set to some gmail address that I never checked
      • so I had no idea people were leaving me notes, then one day I found them all
      • but that was only a few weeks afterwards, so I must have changed it again

welll... chat is cat in french :D
      • ruaok
        hah. of course then.
      • huh. maybe we should teach MBChatLogger how to twitter.
      • kepstin
why not go all the way, and teach mbchatlogger to make musicbrainz edits?
      • STalKer-Y
now there is a question i really *need* to ask :>

      • kepstin
MBChatLogger, rename release "White Album" to "This is completely wrong"
      • MBChatLogger
I'm logging. I don't understand 'rename release "White Album" to "This is completely wrong"', kepstin. Try /msg MBChatLogger help
      • ruaok
we can replace all of our users with MBChatLogger ... thats it.
      • kepstin
        :(
      • STalKer-Y
what do you think of discogs? :D
      • ianmcorvidae
they're often a good data source when making musicbrainz edits :D
      • ruaok
not sure what MBChatLogger thinks of it.
      • nikki
        I don't like their urls
      • they merge artists and then the old url is just a 404 ¬_¬
      • kepstin
STalKer-Y, discogs sometimes knows how to pronounce names of japanese artists that I look up; that's all I use it for.
      • nikki
at least when wikipedia moves pages, you get redirects or a message in the log
      • kepstin
and merged musicbrainz stuff keeps the old uuid/row number as a redirect, right?
      • nikki
        yep
      • ruaok
we try hard to keep urls are permanent or useful as we can.
