        drsaunde: which james bond?
      • 2007-05-11 13120, 2007

      • drsaunde
        it's the "James Bond Theme"
      • 2007-05-11 13141, 2007

      • yllona
        from which movie?

the original theme from the original film (Dr. No)
      • 2007-05-11 13145, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: ah, that's gonna be an ugly one. my suggestion? listen to the originals (if available) and see which moby worked from
      • 2007-05-11 13142, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: i'd always thought it was John barry tho
      • 2007-05-11 13100, 2007

      • drsaunde
well...the original first one was Monty Norman
      • 2007-05-11 13116, 2007

      • drsaunde
and he get composer credits...but rumors are that Barry re-worked it
      • 2007-05-11 13123, 2007

      • yllona
but i just saw the original version of "Casino Royale" (with David Niven) -- for the first time as an adult earlier this week
      • 2007-05-11 13103, 2007

      • drsaunde
        that one's Burt Bacharach :-)
      • 2007-05-11 13107, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: safest bet? monty norman as composer, john barry as arranger
      • 2007-05-11 13125, 2007

      • drsaunde
well..the barry arrangement is not official

drsaunde: ? did yoiu check ascap & bmi?
      • 2007-05-11 13150, 2007

      • drsaunde
and I'm going to link the 2...I just haven't decided on cover vs. remix (as there's no lyrics)
      • 2007-05-11 13101, 2007

      • drsaunde
        Norman all the way
      • 2007-05-11 13104, 2007

      • BrianFreud
seems more a cover than a remix
      • 2007-05-11 13119, 2007

      • BrianFreud
though moby might also have composed by credit, if he re-worked it
      • 2007-05-11 13143, 2007

      • drsaunde
no..the composer credit on the moby album is solely norman
      • 2007-05-11 13108, 2007

      • BrianFreud
couldn't you do both? cover of and remix of?
      • 2007-05-11 13138, 2007

      • drsaunde
i guess...but that seems like overkill to me
      • 2007-05-11 13154, 2007

      • BrianFreud
it's a cover of the song, performed by moby, but a remix version of the original composition
      • 2007-05-11 13106, 2007

      • drsaunde
my point i guess is....can we still call it a cover if there's no lyrics?
      • 2007-05-11 13137, 2007

      • BrianFreud
I tend think to so... you can cover a tune even if you leave out the libretto
      • 2007-05-11 13144, 2007

      • BrianFreud
        or lyrics, in this case
      • 2007-05-11 13105, 2007

      • drsaunde
its not a case of "leaving out" though...both tracks are instrumental
      • 2007-05-11 13119, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: i agree "casino royale" is Bacharach all the way. includes the classic "the look of love"
      • 2007-05-11 13149, 2007

      • BrianFreud
you ever see the original TV version of casino royale?
      • 2007-05-11 13124, 2007

      • BrianFreud
can't find my copy of it - there was a hour long tv version before woody allen's version. A whole lot closer to the original book...
      • 2007-05-11 13131, 2007

      • drsaunde
yeah..that's the one we were discussing (sort of) with David Niven and Peter Sellers
      • 2007-05-11 13143, 2007

      • BrianFreud
        no, before that
      • 2007-05-11 13157, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: at this point in his career moby has a quite adept legal team so the research -- so you can assume that research is complete on moby's end :)
      • 2007-05-11 13132, 2007

      • drsaunde
yeah...like i said...norman is credited in all legal and official channels
      • 2007-05-11 13108, 2007

      • drsaunde
but that first score is so similar to all the barry ones that rumor is that he "fixed" it
      • 2007-05-11 13109, 2007

      • BrianFreud
      • 2007-05-11 13119, 2007

      • yllona
drsaunde: then that's what you work from, any other controversy can be noted in annotations
      • 2007-05-11 13149, 2007

      • BrianFreud
I'd agree - let them fight out the controversy, while we just go from the official sources
      • 2007-05-11 13153, 2007

      • drsaunde
yeah..that's not an issue...i'm certain i have the proper original recording...i'm still stuck on the cover vs. remix

BrianFreud: "fixing" a score is not unusual. one of the more recent ones i can remember involves wynton marsalis.. i.e. the original score he wrote completely outshined the movie -- so a second, lesser known composer was brought in to "fix"

It was sort of fun, to think that those guys were big in 70's, and there they were, in a smallish Finnish festival, on a side stage, and everything showed they were really having fun.
