tags are a bit more erratic and less formal than genres
2007-06-05 15613, 2007
BrianFreud
I find them too subjective to let any outside source do the identifying for me
2007-06-05 15626, 2007
BrianFreud
you end up with 150 "genres", most of which mean nothing to me
2007-06-05 15640, 2007
dholmes
I would if it was just "pick one", but the Last.fm tag cloud concept works pretty well for me
2007-06-05 15654, 2007
BrianFreud
Mine is simple: General Music, Jazz, Classical, Spoken Word, Country, Soundtrack
2007-06-05 15606, 2007
dholmes
It may provide 150, but only a couple will be big
2007-06-05 15619, 2007
dholmes
That's a bit too simple for me
2007-06-05 15659, 2007
dholmes
I want a jazz song from a video game soundtrack to be "Game, Jass, Soundtrack" and for selecting any one of those three in my player it should match
2007-06-05 15602, 2007
BrianFreud
well, that's one reason the way I've done it works - if you want more genres, you can name them as you want
2007-06-05 15630, 2007
BrianFreud
Any that don't have pre-defined roles (classical, soundtrack) are just treated as whatever you call them in taggerscript
2007-06-05 15635, 2007
BrianFreud
so it's easy to add more
2007-06-05 15656, 2007
dholmes
Come to think of it, BMPx might make a strong case for the remaster/multiple release thing
2007-06-05 15623, 2007
dholmes
What would BMPx do if you tried to add two sets of files that are tagged as being the same album in MB?
2007-06-05 15600, 2007
HiFructose
you mean add to the library?
2007-06-05 15604, 2007
dholmes
Yeah
2007-06-05 15623, 2007
HiFructose
it would add them twice, as long as they are not at the same location
2007-06-05 15634, 2007
HiFructose
that is, on the same volume (HAL), and same volume relative root path
2007-06-05 15641, 2007
HiFructose
or, in short, not the same files, heh
2007-06-05 15648, 2007
dholmes
Okay
2007-06-05 15654, 2007
dholmes
Would they appear as two different albums?
2007-06-05 15656, 2007
HiFructose
yeah
2007-06-05 15610, 2007
dholmes
Okay, I guess that sorta works
2007-06-05 15621, 2007
HiFructose
the library is kinda complex in 0.4, it can deal with such situations
2007-06-05 15632, 2007
BrianFreud
how would it figure out which track was which release though?
2007-06-05 15634, 2007
HiFructose
it will be still sort of confusing to users, but at least they wiill appear as 2 entities
2007-06-05 15644, 2007
dholmes
Okay
2007-06-05 15655, 2007
HiFructose
ah hmm
2007-06-05 15602, 2007
HiFructose
same release, in same folder
2007-06-05 15606, 2007
HiFructose
well ok, that won't work
2007-06-05 15612, 2007
HiFructose
it doesn't look at the filenames directly
2007-06-05 15614, 2007
BrianFreud
If you have two sets of 12 tracks, and each track n has the same mbid, how to distinguish?
2007-06-05 15621, 2007
HiFructose
BrianFreud: yeah that won't work
2007-06-05 15643, 2007
HiFructose
or, it will work, but they will appear as one release i guess
2007-06-05 15603, 2007
HiFructose
hmm actually the library is really complex, i am not sure how they would be presented to the user
2007-06-05 15607, 2007
HiFructose
i'd have to test such a case
2007-06-05 15618, 2007
BrianFreud
lol, well, that's the case he's thinking of :P
2007-06-05 15636, 2007
BrianFreud
a "normal" Nevermind, and a MFSL Nevermind
2007-06-05 15643, 2007
dholmes
Well, they wouldn't have to be in the same folder
2007-06-05 15652, 2007
dholmes
Picard would put them in one at the moment of course
2007-06-05 15603, 2007
HiFructose
if they're not in the same folder, they will be seen separately
2007-06-05 15620, 2007
HiFructose
BMP does a lot of stuff with paths, it will keep them with a different insert_path attribute
2007-06-05 15628, 2007
HiFructose
which will qualify them enough to distinguish them
2007-06-05 15633, 2007
dholmes
Okay
2007-06-05 15646, 2007
HiFructose
but there's in the end only so much one can do
2007-06-05 15655, 2007
dholmes
Hm, looks like Last.fm + WMP11 + FLAC codec + Tag support extender plugin doesn't work
2007-06-05 15659, 2007
HiFructose
if they are really in the same path, tagged exactly the same, but with difrferent filenames
2007-06-05 15612, 2007
dholmes
My FLAC files played from the library don't show up in Last.fm. How disappointing :(
2007-06-05 15625, 2007
HiFructose
then nothing can really distinguish them except for the human eye or some super-sophisticated filename-based analyzer
2007-06-05 15631, 2007
BrianFreud
I run in to that with some ogg too
2007-06-05 15640, 2007
dholmes
Yeah
2007-06-05 15652, 2007
dholmes
Well, the audio is pretty noticeably different in this case; one is substantially louder
2007-06-05 15653, 2007
BrianFreud
even still, I have 1874 tracks in 7 days :P
2007-06-05 15625, 2007
BrianFreud
though my neighbors make 0 sense to me... most are extremely low matches
2007-06-05 15640, 2007
dholmes
I just created a Last.fm account today, but the only things that show up are songs played in the Last.fm program, and a couple files I opened individually, and a couple MP3s (I have very few on this comp at the moment)
2007-06-05 15652, 2007
BrianFreud
Who are you? I'll send you a friend req :)
2007-06-05 15602, 2007
dholmes
holme215
2007-06-05 15605, 2007
BrianFreud
aCiD2 talked me into joining last week
2007-06-05 15623, 2007
dholmes
My profile doesn't at all reflect my taste in music at the moment
2007-06-05 15637, 2007
BrianFreud
pretty much all the channel regs are in my last friends list, if you want to send them reqs
2007-06-05 15646, 2007
dholmes
Once I get all my stuff tagged and back in something other than WMP
2007-06-05 15651, 2007
BrianFreud
ugh
2007-06-05 15651, 2007
dholmes
Then it should work a little better
2007-06-05 15655, 2007
BrianFreud
why were the ever wmp?
2007-06-05 15635, 2007
dholmes
That sentence is not syntactically or semantically comprehensible
2007-06-05 15605, 2007
BrianFreud
sorry, encoding flac to ogg in the background, my wireless keyboard tends to drop characters under heavy cpu load
2007-06-05 15620, 2007
dholmes
Ah
2007-06-05 15622, 2007
BrianFreud
*s/the/they
2007-06-05 15630, 2007
dholmes
Oh
2007-06-05 15642, 2007
dholmes
You mean WMA? The files are FLAC, I'm just playing them in Windows Media Player
2007-06-05 15654, 2007
dholmes
Because I like it
2007-06-05 15602, 2007
dholmes
But it doesn't work all that well for FLAC :(
2007-06-05 15603, 2007
BrianFreud
oh, thought you meant the file type, not the player
2007-06-05 15607, 2007
dholmes
Ah
2007-06-05 15618, 2007
dholmes
No, I would never use any WMA file format =D
2007-06-05 15632, 2007
HiFructose
i have a few WMAs but they really suck
2007-06-05 15633, 2007
BrianFreud
lol, that's why I was asking =)
2007-06-05 15639, 2007
HiFructose
gstreamer uses a lot of CPU to play them
2007-06-05 15649, 2007
dholmes
Well, that is a sorta unusual use case
2007-06-05 15602, 2007
HiFructose
heh
2007-06-05 15606, 2007
dholmes
Beats iTunes though; it transcodes any .wma files into AAC when you import them =D
2007-06-05 15612, 2007
BrianFreud
everything uses a lot of cpu to play them - and they're still crappy quality compared to other codecs
2007-06-05 15638, 2007
BrianFreud
yeah, itunes made news today... seems they finally play AAC and MP3 at the same volume level :P
2007-06-05 15639, 2007
dholmes
Well, my understanding is they're supposed to be competative with AAC and Vorbis, but I don't use WMA at all so I can't really say
2007-06-05 15656, 2007
BrianFreud
yeah, all my older = mp3, newer = ogg -8 or ogg-10
2007-06-05 15619, 2007
HiFructose
vorbis really sounds better than mp3 at the same bitrate
2007-06-05 15624, 2007
BrianFreud
definately
2007-06-05 15638, 2007
BrianFreud
had a blast from the past today... found an old vqf file :P
2007-06-05 15600, 2007
HiFructose
haha
2007-06-05 15605, 2007
HiFructose
kjofol anyone? :P
2007-06-05 15612, 2007
dholmes
I prefer to stick to FLAC when I can, but last time I tried iTunes on Windows doesn't play FLAC at all, and WMP11 plays them with the right codec but the plugin that lets you add them to your library is buggy, and doesn't work with Last.fm
2007-06-05 15619, 2007
Aankhen``
WavPack++
2007-06-05 15620, 2007
dholmes
I don't know what those are :P
2007-06-05 15656, 2007
HiFructose
vqf is something from Yamaha IIRC
2007-06-05 15603, 2007
shawn__ has quit
2007-06-05 15608, 2007
BrianFreud
see, I personally can hear no diifference between ogg -7 and flac, but just to be safe, I normally go ape/flac/cd --> ogg-8, and if it's one of my favorites, ogg-10
2007-06-05 15625, 2007
dholmes
Oh yeah, that. Wasn't that totally proprietary?
2007-06-05 15632, 2007
BrianFreud
there was a hacked version
2007-06-05 15637, 2007
BrianFreud
it was the original AAC codec
2007-06-05 15651, 2007
HiFructose
ah
2007-06-05 15600, 2007
HiFructose
yeah right i remember now
2007-06-05 15610, 2007
BrianFreud
heavy cpu load, back around 96, 97
2007-06-05 15625, 2007
HiFructose
ow well we used to encode mp3s on Pentium 60's
2007-06-05 15626, 2007
dholmes
I can't hear the difference either, but I want to know that my copies are exact and that I don't have to worry about keeping the original CDs or anything, and I don't mind the disk usage, so I use FLAC
2007-06-05 15631, 2007
HiFructose
or even 486's DX4 100's
2007-06-05 15659, 2007
Aankhen`` fondly remembers his father's 486DX2/66.
2007-06-05 15613, 2007
BrianFreud is still using his dual p3 1ghz
2007-06-05 15617, 2007
dholmes
I fondly remember my 286. I didn't encode mp3s on it though :P
2007-06-05 15648, 2007
HiFructose
i remember my ZX81
2007-06-05 15650, 2007
HiFructose
lol
2007-06-05 15651, 2007
BrianFreud
I remember my pentium 133 taking a full day to encode 1 CD's worth of 128 kpbs mp3 :P
2007-06-05 15617, 2007
BrianFreud
now I do ogg conversion in the background :P
2007-06-05 15630, 2007
HiFructose
i remember all the guys in the boarding school coming to me for ripping their CDs because we found out that my drive, with certain parameters set, was able to get a 1:1 binary copy of the digital data off the CD
2007-06-05 15636, 2007
BrianFreud
yup
2007-06-05 15637, 2007
HiFructose
and some people were quite crazy about flawless ripping
2007-06-05 15659, 2007
BrianFreud
my roommate had a plextor, so he would rip, we'd toss it to mine over the 100 base-T connection, then I'd encode it
2007-06-05 15627, 2007
HiFructose
yeah like that
2007-06-05 15636, 2007
HiFructose
well actually we had only 10Base2
2007-06-05 15638, 2007
HiFructose
LOL
2007-06-05 15625, 2007
BrianFreud
lol
2007-06-05 15632, 2007
BrianFreud
scary part is, I still have some of those mp3s :P
2007-06-05 15616, 2007
dholmes
ew
2007-06-05 15618, 2007
HiFructose
yeah i have some of them somewhere too
2007-06-05 15627, 2007
HiFructose
i kinda started with
2007-06-05 15631, 2007
HiFructose
i remember
2007-06-05 15643, 2007
HiFructose
i started ripping CDs and encoding them with ADPCM
2007-06-05 15648, 2007
HiFructose
so they would be only 1/4 of the size
2007-06-05 15658, 2007
HiFructose
then in 95 someone came along and told me eh you don't know winamp?
2007-06-05 15611, 2007
HiFructose
and well the rest is history, pretty much for everyone
