some were good...but generally there's a lot of presumed samples which aren't really
yllona
yes, it' s a start.
BrianG
link works, but i couldn't search for artists.. i guess because it's not live.
yllona
yep
drsaunde wonders if he could get the BBC to pay him to fix/enter data
drsaunde: i don't listen to much hip-hop, but i am occasionally hired to listen and identify
it's not hard to find that kind of work, tho you may need to hook-up with folk in NYC
BrianG
do you ever get so bored you just stare at your balls?
warp
yllona: wow, hired to identify samples?
yllona
yep. started for me in college
warp
nice.
drsaunde
so what is the most sampled track?
from your experience
yllona
warp: one of my college buddies floated his student loans to acquire rights to classic R & B recordings -- he was the only one of use to see the "rap music" was gonna be *huge*. the rest of us thought it was a "fad" -- this would be ca. 1979/80
drsaunde: that would be any number of quincy jones tunes. in fact his son QJ III, just set up a separate business for cross-licensing the Q catalog -- as if Q you needs any more exposure :)
BrianG
amen brother
by the winstons
drsaunde
i though possibly isaac hayes
yllona
warp: by the time we were seniors in 1983 my buddy was already making $70K /year in royalties... that was a gaint sum of money in those day, and well before the hip-hop revolution
drsaunde
or mayfield
yllona
drsaunde: nope, tho superly preety much caps it as a single recording
warp
yllona: wow, nice.
yllona
*album
warp wouldn't mind $70k/year ;)
drsaunde: isaac has undergone a "resurgence" but remember his classic albums from teh '70s featured more "arrangements" than compositions -- until "Shaft"
oops and that would be "Superfly" ^^ sorry
also marvin gaye's "Troubleman" note that all of these were movie soundtracks, but Quincy was writing TV/movie 15+ years before teh "blaxplotation" era
herbie hancock hasn't done too bad either

{global notice} Good day all, In about 15 minutes to half an hour i'm going to begin maintenence on a few servers. About 5000 total users will be affected by this and this should not take long at all. I will give any further information in wallops, /mode your_nick w if you wish to see any further info.
yllona
Quincy's first "pop" mega-hit was lesley gore's "it's my party" in 1963 (or '64)
he owns full rights on that track, just as he does for pretty much everything else he's written since the early '60s
he got burned *badly* in the mid-1950s and said "never again"
BrianG: which of the [unknown] styles should i use for unknown artist for an entire release?
BrianG
i'm pretty sure there is only one artist named [unknown]
so, that one
:)
it's time for sleep now, later.
yllona
BrianG: i'm searching the wiki for [unknown] and can't tell which is correct
whats the different between MusicBrainz and cddb ?
+e
Clint
the data and the structure
BrianFreud
freedb/cddb takes anything anyone gives them, but it has to come from a CD submission, and other than some profanity filters, the data's totally unstructured and unverified
