i hate compilations of stuff which was released previously.
      • mudcrow
I love VA comps. I collect them
      • BrianFreud
I don't expect PicardQT to match each track in a VA album back to its original album,
      • cooperaa
because I will never in my life own all those cds from 1959
      • BrianFreud
if I want it, I can move it
      • SerialNumber
        CDs from 1959? ;)
      • cooperaa
        reissued ;)
      • SerialNumber
        :)
      • BrianFreud
what's so wrong about asking someone who wants a Top 40 hits album to move the tracks by hand out of the albums too?
      • If I have to break my releases manually, just on personal preference, that's reason to screw up the db
      • and the same holds true in reverse
      • mudcrow
but theres 1000's of official compilations cataloguing that era, why add bootlegs that contain tracks that are widely availble on 1000's ot other releases
      • BrianFreud
*/that's NO reason I meant to say
      • cooperaa
because those releases aren't as widely available as the torrent is
      • BrianFreud
        that's exactly my point
      • so?
      • like I say
      • cooperaa
all those silly compilations, maybe 10 people on earth own
      • BrianFreud
let them ID the tracks, then manually move them back together
      • cooperaa
thousands of people "own" these torrents
      • BrianFreud: it isn't that easy
      • warp
mudcrow: apparantly enough people prefer this particular bootleg compilation.
      • BrianFreud
just like I take the VA compilation and manually move it apart
      • dmppanda
        lol
      • cooperaa
so it doesn't get tagged that way
      • warp nods.
      • BrianFreud
So Cooperaa, if the 5 or 6 of us talking right now were to decide on our top 10 tracks and create a "Best of MB IRC April21" compilation, that would be worthy of entry?
      • mudcrow
        exactly coop
      • cooperaa
(and chances are someone was doing that do be a douche)
      • like someone who ruined the Trivium charts with bogus track names
      • SerialNumber
"Everybody, NP now and send them to me!"
      • cooperaa
BrianFreud: if it's useful to you, sure
      • Synchro joined the channel
      • as long as its categorized that way
      • PlaylistBrainz :)
      • errorlevel
Is the XML WebService having problems right now? Or, is the database down?
      • BrianFreud suddenly imagines opening up XYZ latest pop artist, only to see 1000's of homebrew comps listed
      • cooperaa
no, I don't think they should be compilations
      • mudcrow
        database is down/dying errorlevel
      • errorlevel
        Oh, okay.
      • cooperaa
I don't think we can handle them currently
      • but I think they would be good to have
      • errorlevel
On the plus side, at least this is helping me test out the error-handling code in my application. =)
      • BrianFreud
        hell, doesn't stop us now...
      • lol
      • Live vs. Compilation is such an overloaded single choice field...
      • cooperaa
BrianFreud: they could be like torrents, if someone doesn't tag against the release in 6 months, kill it or something
      • although, then we're deleting history :P
      • idunno, pretty complex issue
      • warp
        haha
      • BrianFreud
actually, that's what I was just thinking is kind of the standard imho
      • mudcrow
the alternative times should probably be accepted as valid bootlegs, but if they are, where do you draw the line between whats an acceptable bootleg and millions of homebrew comps
      • BrianFreud
"will this release even exist 6 months from now"
      • a torrent'd bootleg of a concert, definately
      • cooperaa
        its a very good point
      • BrianFreud
        some homebrew? maybe, maybe not
      • cooperaa
some torrents last several years on a single tracker though
      • its quite amazing
      • BrianFreud
        WinXPGold.torrent... Win2003.torrent...
      • cooperaa
        lol
      • warp
        cooperaa: hm, really?
      • cooperaa
        warp: yup
      • BrianFreud
        yes, some rare ones
      • like "Top500Songsof1900-2000"
      • but "Homebrew mix from random canadian guy #88"?
      • hawke joined the channel
      • cooperaa
ya, I wouldn't say they are rare... they are the most popular that survive
      • mudcrow
whenever I download a bootleg. I always consider its value for entering into MB. The number consideration is are these tracks widely available on official releases, if yes, it dont get entered
      • BrianFreud
how many will actually exist though?
      • cooperaa
      • BrianFreud
my brother for example, is one who grabs those
      • 3 months later, he's deleted 99% of the tracks, as he got tired of em
      • warp
        brrrr
      • warp doesn't understand such people.
      • BrianFreud
yeah, but see cooperaa, that's one we decided NOT to list
      • lol
      • cooperaa
      • still active
      • BrianFreud
they're the same people who keep every single track in their Winamp/ITunes playlist on shuffle cooperaa
      • warp
        cooperaa: impressive.
      • cooperaa
BrianFreud: I don't care who plays them
      • I have all those billboard lists in iTunes, what's your point?
      • Muz_
        luks, ping
      • mudcrow
I keep every track in itunes, and on shuffle
      • BrianFreud
no, I mean every single track on their computer all in one big list
      • on shuffle
      • cooperaa
some days I like to take a trip back to 1950
      • BrianFreud
so they delete the ones they're tired of
      • cooperaa
BrianFreud: that's stupid, who cares how people listen to music
      • BrianFreud
I'm not talking about how they listen to it
      • cooperaa
I listen on shuffle most of the time
      • and some times I like to listen to albums on shuffle
      • mudcrow
doesnt bother me how people listen to music, as long as they enjoy it
      • BrianFreud
I'm talking about whether the "release" will still exist anywhere 6 months later
      • cooperaa
sometimes I like to listen to a particular genre
      • BrianFreud: yes, the release existing is important
      • mudcrow
I started adding genre to my collection, then it seemed pointless as everything was listed as punk
      • BrianFreud
see, those types of releases I just think are ones that won't still exist
      • cooperaa
but like several releases in the db now, you'll never see a physical copy because they are owned privately or maybe only 100 copies were made
      • BrianFreud
a bootleg of a concert will
      • a billboard top list will
      • a random homebrew won't
      • cooperaa
        a random homebrew won't
      • mudcrow
billboard top lists are copyrighted, which was a major reason for removing them
      • cooperaa
yes, I remember that mudcrow ...
      • BrianFreud
side note: are they still copyrighted if it's a released (CD) set?
      • mudcrow
although how you can copyright a list of things is beyond me
      • BrianFreud
I know I've seen CD releases of entire Billboard lists...
      • cooperaa
how can they copyright something based on sales numbers?
      • mudcrow: exactly what I was thinking
      • BrianFreud: I've seen lists, but they are like 10 songs for each year
      • BrianFreud
        you can't copyright a fact
      • you CAN copyright a collection of facts, though
      • MBChatLogger
        Ewww! Gross!
      • mudcrow
but they are americans, americans seem to think you can own anything, like gracenote
      • BrianFreud
that's what the original cddb did when they went private
      • cooperaa
        hahaha
      • warp
        hm
      • BrianFreud
cooperaa - I've seen 10, 20, 50 disc sets which are entire year sets
      • warp
iirc database laws in europe are more strict as to what can be copyrighted and what can't.
      • BrianFreud
        yeah
      • in the US, a fact can not be copyrighted
      • a collection of inter-related facts can be
      • hence cddb nesessitating freedb
      • mudcrow
        and musicbrainz
      • BrianFreud
thought the mb db was in the cc?
      • cooperaa
(not sure) but I thought MB was PD
      • BrianFreud
problem was that noone ever thought to put the cddb database into the creative commons, then the company went IPO
      • warp
PD is scary, not every country has that concept. in those countries it ends up being not distributable at all.
      • BrianFreud
yeah... cc is a much better license
      • sdbrady joined the channel
      • warp
cc has its problems, but its decent.
      • BrianFreud wonders if we can add any more acronyms to the discussion
      • it needs more tla's.
      • BrianFreud
        and PUIDs
      • hell, and TRMs
      • warp
        yay, there's one!
      • BrianFreud
        and even discIDs
      • lol
      • warp
and i don't even know it means.
      • BrianFreud
not a clue what TRM or PUID stand for :P
      • cooperaa
        what does GNO stand for?
      • I kept hearing it in my business class :P
      • BrianFreud
        gnu is not a (something)
      • warp
        girls night out?
      • mudcrow
        Gnomes Not Ohms
      • warp
      • BrianFreud
        GNO, or GNP?
      • cooperaa
warp: I've seen that but couldn't find something that related to biz
      • BrianFreud
do they list trm and puid?
