I used it for a few recordings - lousy medium for recordings. Lossy compression on the recording, and unless you spent a few thousand for a real high end transfer machine, only way to transfer the audio out was AAD, no DDD, even though the recording on the MD was digital.
*s/DAD, not DDD
pbryan
BrianFreud: Even with optical out?
BrianFreud
yeah, because at least every unit I checked, it had an analog processor internally getting the signal to that output

The more I look at edits, the more I think the manditory edit note idea would be decent to consider. YEah people would game it with junk text, but at least they'd have no reason to think it ok to make edits w/o some note...
CatCat strongly disagrees
why?
mudcrow
I make 1000's of edits without notes
juhae
It would be highly annoying when you're doing a lot of editing
pbryan thinks it would be a nice idea for MB to warn of an identical edit that was previously voted down.
pbryan
"Warning: You're trying to make a change that was voted down in previous attempts. Do so at your own risk."
mudcrow
do you really require a edit note for a discogs link/wiki link/amazon ASIN
BrianFreud
mudcrow: yeah, I do too, if I'm doing a full series of ARs
juhae
"This is a link to their page at Discogs."
CatCat
first week editors.. the nebie falg, they might shoudl have it?
BrianFreud
maybe only manditory on stuff that should be explained - add release edits, merge edits, remove edits, change time edits?
CatCat also thinks that newbie flagged editors shoudl be alowed to do removal edits
CatCat
BrianFreud: yes, that makes much more sence
merge, remove
add.. hmm
mudcrow
only manditory on possible corruptive edits, merge/rename/delete
CatCat
i really agree to that
on the possibly corruptive edits
CatCat nods
those edits shoudl be treated differntly
BrianFreud
Isn't a non-existant release being added in at least some way "corruptive"?
mudcrow
but I vote no on most of those if they have no edit note anyway
CatCat
shoudl require 3 votes or somesuch. keep open until
BrianFreud: no
BrianFreud
no?
CatCat
do you *now* how amny releases are created a day in the world?
*most* released added.. are ok
mudcrow
how do you know as mo said
nikki
there are some times when you might want to write a note for links
CatCat
just needs more fixings
BrianFreud
yes, but as we all know, it is hard to prove the non-existance of something
nikki
like "amazon lists it as an import even though it isn't"
BrianFreud
So add release edits ought to be required to show some sign they exist, rather than later some other editor cleaning things up having to spend hours trying to make sure some obscure release does NOT exist
CatCat
if some reales that doesnt actually exsist is in the database.. its not that bad
its worse if good data is merged/removed
besides
BrianFreud
It takes 30 seconds on most releases you could add to find a source showing it exists. Can take much much longer to prove it doesn't later.
nikki
oh, and I often don't leave notes on my edits, it depends how easy to find I think the info is
mudcrow
I just spent hours finally tracking down that a Now Dance 2005 comp was released in Korea.
juhae
BrianFreud, It becomes completely awful to try to prove the existence of some promo-only single from a relatively obscure band
CatCat
wich is why we should *encurage* notes on adds
BrianFreud
juhae: scans? photos of liner in hand?
juhae
Not saying they're very common at MB, but anyway ;)
mudcrow
that requires someone to have a scanner/camera.
CatCat
my camera is konk and my scanner is not avaialbe becasue the mac only has 2 usb thingies used up by the mouse and keyboard
juhae
I wish I'd have a scanner
CatCat
i can decide between havign a keyboard or ascanner :P
fucksedup
mudcrow
as yet I've been unable to photograph any 12" that has legible text
juhae
CatCat, You can communicate with us via hand-written scanned notes
BrianFreud
ok, but how many people don't have a digital camera, access to a scanner, and also at the same time have access to promo CDs that are totally unmentioned anywhere on the web?
CatCat
BrianFreud: wich is why we INCURAGE notes in adds
juhae
BrianFreud, Me, around the time I started editing in MB
:)
CatCat
go juhae !
im not sayign that votign no on soem add thats all like "somg nothing crappy" is wrong
but yes
it woudl b no differnt than now
and since the more destructive edits woudl require notes. we coudl focus more attentino on the adds
CatCat thinks this is really a good idea
BrianFreud
lol, sure, ok, but if the editor says "I have no scanner, no camera, and I have this CD" and the release is well added and has times and tocs and cat #s or whatever, ok, I'll take their word
mudcrow
BrianFreud: many people do not have a scanner/camera. the same discussion has happened at discogs, with very active contributors there stating they dont own a scanner/camera and refuse to buy either just to validate submissions
CatCat
of course
i made thaqt mistake :(
BrianFreud
sure, I'm more thinking of the 1000+ VAs dumped in every month
CatCat
got bitched at behind on front of my back in irc even
BrianFreud: thats another problem
BrianFreud
some of the artists I look at, the VA section is just so much bork, I don't even bother trying
CatCat
the sad fact is that probably most of those are valid anyway
just needs fixing
mudcrow
yep catcat
BrianFreud
I wish I could turn on seeing soundtracks and live, but not have to load all of VA
CatCat
warps spesific subscriptino by thingy
mudcrow
I love VA releases
CatCat
anything tagged to a certan thing or has a certan release types
juhae: i once got an old automod randomly voting no to one of my edits. and he never answerd my why
FauxFaux
Ten days of perfect tunes, their colours; red and blue.
CatCat
sorry, mud, i did my 2-3k voting spree when that was what it was
hello FauxFaux
FauxFaux
Hi!
mudcrow
if you look at the stats most of the open edits are adding ARs, and most ARs are no-brain yes votes
CatCat nods
CatCat
hmmm
one of these days..
imma gonan crack dow nand jsut do that
i is a lazy fucker but once i actually get of my ass, i go to TOWN on shit
CatCat nods
BrianFreud
mudcrow: yeah, problem is the .1% that are bork... and I can't think of any good way to catch those and exclude the other 99.9%
CatCat goes procrastinating off
I'd love to see something where we could set, say, the instruments a person plays, or the voice part a person sings
mudcrow
if you condensed the add AR edits to one edit per release, instead of multiple per AR (like adding play guitar on 20 tracks creates 20 edits) that would shrink the vote queue right down
BrianFreud
So if Sally Jane is a soprano, when someone sets a vocal AR for bass for her, it's flagged. If Tom Smith plays trumpet and harmonica, when someone sets him playing the cello, it's flagged, etc
juhae
CatCat, I think I recall that occasion
BrianFreud was the recipient of one of those storms :D
nikki
CatCat: I remember voting on all open mods a few times... I was always disappointed that the message saying there weren't any more edits to vote on wasn't more excited and colourful :P
pbryan
Heh.
BrianFreud
*you have reached the end of the internet. Please wait 5 minutes, we will have more internets waiting for you*

it bothers me that the most common edit type is add relationship, but I can't filter out the ones I'll vote on
I rarely vote on liner note stuff, but wikipedia links and amazon and stuff are easy
mudcrow
yeah, I've always wanted to be able to filter that, I usually vote on liner note stuff, and rarely on amazon & wiki links
BrianFreud
well, 1845 open add english release edits... /me starts checking
mudcrow
and I've always found it annoying that it only takes about 70 votes to get on the top weekly voters list. thats 10 a day, you lazy bastards
I did 5000+ votes last week.
and the queue is about the same level :/
BrianFreud
yeah, I have tried the megavoting sprees too
nikki
I sometimes approve a few edits but then get bored by how long it takes :/
BrianFreud
It really needs like 50 of us doing 50, not one of us doing 5000
