where is this foxy reference everyone is up-in-arms about? if it's any one numerous songs in the '70s (or a cover of one of those songs) with that word in the title it's "Foxy" not "Foxey"
foxy was an urban (black folks) slang term for "pretty+sexy" in the 1970s
drsaunde
weird situation..intended title is "foxy", but was misspelled on are you experienced as "foxey" and the error was compounded by being registered as "foxey"
petros
According to wikipedia "foxey" was a misspelling on the american release
So when it comes to intended title I would vote for "foxy lady"
yllona
it's definitely "foxy"... sorry wiki-pundits. i was there :P
aCiD2
foxy, all the way
drsaunde
oh i agree
the "sticky" situation is the perpetuation of the original misspelling to ascap
HairMetalAddict: can attest to the number of songs with the word or lyric foxy in them :-D
petros wonders if it would consitute heresy to imagine another vocalist on Jimi's songs. Fo instance Janis Joplin.
petros
or Wilson Pickett
yllona
petros: i've heard some amazing covers of foxy lady
most notably by the Isley Brothers in concert. note: hendrix made his debut with the Isleys in 1966
lenny kravitz does a great foxy lady too.
petros
yllona: I love Jimi, but have always wondered if his songs would have benefited from another vocalist, while he was still playing that guitar.
yllona
so does larry graham (of graham central station)
jimi is like prince in that regard, sometimes the tunes require a better vocalist ;)

I also like The Cure's cover of Foxy Lady
petros
yllona: What cover of Prince is vocally superior, IYO. Quindon(sp?) Tarver did a mean "When doves Cry", but I'm currently stumped about others.
BrainzBot
Spelling suggestions: Quinton Quin don Quin-don

Solomon Burke doing Purple Rain!

petros: pretty much any old school R & B artist covering prince
solomon burke, chaka khan, etc
drsaunde
i brought up solomon 'cause he's one of my faves :-)
petros
Siding with you generation? ;P
But yeah, Solomon's got a great voice.
drsaunde
not my generation per se..i'm not of the 60s and 70s

petros please not that prince is my generation also. he's actually older than i am. and he never could sing -- compared to his contemporaries
Creap has quit
i went to prince's very first concert *ever* (outside of minneapolis). it wasn't very good.
petros
Ok, I'm obviously too tired to joke about this. And if you say that Prince can't sing I can only respond that his 'trying to sing' sounds OK to my ears. But then I wouldn't know who you are comparing him with.
yllona
when prince's first album was released "For You" in 1978 his competition was marvin gaye, luther vandross, barry white, michael jackson, peabo bryson, earth wind & fire, smokey robinson, the commodores and many others. all of them are *much better* singers
and of course stevie wonder. what stood out about prince wasn't his voice (or even the lyrics back then) it was arrangements and instrumentation
petros
_That_ we can agree on. (Except I'm noty too fond of Jackson's voice)
yllona
prince's first single was "soft & wet" which i bought on 45 rpm. the lyrics were *really* explicit, and that was what stood out, aside from the very funky arrangent
*arrangement
Infinito_ has quit
and of course i have the LP. his guitar licks didn't top the isley brothers (who's lead singer was also a falsetto)
and again a much better singer
petros
Well, he's a jack of all trades.
yllona
yeah, so is stevie wonder :P
petros
But good at that though.
yllona: I'm not too much into Wonder. Go figure.
drsaunde
if you pretend the 80s and 90s never happened for Stevie you'll like him a lot more
yllona
oh have you heard that albums from 1968 -1979, they're timeless and classic. including "journey into the secret life of plants"
drsaunde: agreed
drsaunde
but "What the Fuss" is as good as his early stuff!
petros
I know. I should hear "Talking" , "Songs In The Key", "Innervisions". I jusst haven't sat down to do it yet.
yllona
and for singers how could i forget donny hathaway. :)
another jack of all trade, btw
petros: add "music of my mind" to your stevie list
