like in english there's people who insist it's wrong to do things like end a sentence with a preposition (e.g. "what are looking at?") or split infinitives (e.g. "to willingly do something")

is telling people how to properly use apostrophe considered prescriptivism?

2008-08-30 24333, 2008

english spelling is rather prescriptive anyway, we could write phonetically but then we'd lose the distinction between homonyms and etymological stuff, nobody just acquires the ability to spell, but just by exposing kids to language they'll acquire all the grammar rules of that particular dialect
2008-08-30 24334, 2008

And on the other hand, taking Shakespeare as a yardstick... He's been dead for 400 years, I doubt he uses pronouns too much thesee days.

xlotlu: and how do i feel about $upper() into picard?
2008-08-30 24300, 2008
nikki
srotta: the argument is usually something along the lines of "youngsters these days, they don't know anything..." when in fact people have been using 'they' as a singular pronoun for centuries
2008-08-30 24305, 2008
xlotlu

xlotlu
Clint: what do you want to uppercase?
2008-08-30 24317, 2008

I don't actually get the argument about grammar / spelling anyway. Yeah, there's a difference between spoken and written language, true, but the system works the same way.

how do I add a new artist when one with the same name (though different person) already exists?
2008-08-30 24312, 2008
srotta
"Exposing" kids by speaking to them will introduce them to spoken language, exposing them by teaching them to read will result in them learning about written word.
2008-08-30 24337, 2008
luks
jrb: just like any other artist, but you will be asked to enter a disambiguation comment

Doing both is probably preferred, and doing it so that people have at least somewhat common understanding of the language is all the better.

Also, if I'm trying to enter an audio book with no chapters or sections -- just tracks every 3 min, should I go with "Track 01" for each track?
