Is it possible to automatically tag mp3s? I tried picard on some, and it found less than 1 percent

i can use 'lookup' and do it manually, but can it be done automatically?
2008-03-01 06111, 2008
ruaok
did you hit the cluster button?
2008-03-01 06123, 2008
ruaok
its easier to cluster your files into album and then match albums
2008-03-01 06123, 2008
djc__
well let me see what that does
2008-03-01 06109, 2008
djc__
im not sure how many complete 'albums' i have
2008-03-01 06114, 2008
djc__
possibly not many
2008-03-01 06131, 2008
ruaok
they don't have to be complete. but you need more than 1 or 2 tracks for it to work
2008-03-01 06143, 2008
djc__
thats pretty much what I have
2008-03-01 06149, 2008
djc__
a pile of assorted individual tracks
2008-03-01 06112, 2008
djc__
and no idea what album they do or do not go with
2008-03-01 06131, 2008
djc__
i seem to get the idea that it can take a 'fingerprint' of a track and use that to identify, yet it doesnt seem to do that
2008-03-01 06142, 2008
ruaok
did you select the tracks and hit scan?
2008-03-01 06107, 2008
djc__
I have it set to scan on add, and it scanned all of them
2008-03-01 06121, 2008
djc__
most came up with 'couldnt find PUID ....'
2008-03-01 06130, 2008
ruaok
can't help much then.
2008-03-01 06156, 2008
djc__
does that mean it isnt able to get a fingerprint from the track, or that its got one but it cant find a match for it anywhere?

most of them have at least partial id3 info.. it would be handy if it could use that to help find the authoritiative info
2008-03-01 06143, 2008
djc__
when I do 'lookup' at first it doesnt find anything, but if I blank out everything except the track name and artist name, then it can find it.. is there a way to tell it to try looking up with just those two pieces of info if it doesnt find anything with all the info?

might be handy to allow a certain 'fudge factor' on duration too.. i just found one that matched but the duration was one second off
2008-03-01 06117, 2008
BrianFreudf
you can play with the matching %s under advanced settings under options in the menu
2008-03-01 06124, 2008
BrianFreudf
you may have yours set a bit too stringent
2008-03-01 06108, 2008
djc__
ill try that.. they are set at whatever they are set to by default

ok.. just lowered them all to 25%
2008-03-01 06109, 2008
BrianFreudf
that may be a bit too flexible... /me check his settings
2008-03-01 06150, 2008
BrianFreudf
Try 65 70 75 70, I've had pretty good results with that
2008-03-01 06157, 2008
djc__
well it isnt finding any even at 25
2008-03-01 06140, 2008
djc__
always comes back with "up with 'couldnt find PUID ....'
2008-03-01 06148, 2008
djc__
does that mean it isnt able to get a fingerprint from the track, or that its got one but it cant find a match for it anywhere?
2008-03-01 06111, 2008
djc__
and if the former, is there something I need to do to 'generate' fingerprints for them?
2008-03-01 06133, 2008

i wonder if that is signifigant, and how to correct it
2008-03-01 06139, 2008

what os?

I'm not a linux user, but I seem to recall you have to have the codec-equivs installed
2008-03-01 06151, 2008
djc__
doesnt seem to be any package by that name
2008-03-01 06120, 2008
BrianFreudf
no, I mean the equivalent codecs
2008-03-01 06148, 2008
BrianFreudf
lol, you really need a real linux picard user, I'm out of what I know about using it on linux here :P
2008-03-01 06150, 2008
djc__
well all the files are mp3, and I certainly have mp3 installed
but yes, not having fingerprinting enabled will make puid-lookups useless
2008-03-01 06144, 2008
djc__
seems to rather defaut the entire purpose of the software
2008-03-01 06136, 2008
BrianFreudf
well, the software still works fine for tagging, just puid lookups need to know how to handle type x multimedia, if you don't have the support for type x that it needs, it can't generate a puid to look up
2008-03-01 06104, 2008
djc__
its a rather huge app for just 'tagging' by hand.. there already exist cli tools that can do that
2008-03-01 06113, 2008
djc__
anyway
2008-03-01 06120, 2008
djc__
it seems to want ffmpeg, which I certainly have..
2008-03-01 06126, 2008
BrianFreudf
as I say, what you need is a linux user who can tell you what might be missing
