        Well, the banks certainly were
      • brick_ijigg
ruaok, why do you trust the ECB so much more than the fed? on account of who runs the executive branch currently?
      • yllona
yep. and gold hit $1000 yesterday. :)
      • ruaok
        brick_ijigg: yep.
      • brick_ijigg
        all right
      • ruaok
let the strength of the euro and the weakness of the dollar make it clear whom I trust.
      • yllona
the executive branch has very little influence on the Fed reserve -- again that's the point of the thing
      • ruaok shakes his head violently
      • ruaok
        benanke is a tool.
      • yllona
ruaok: it's coming for the euro.
      • ruaok
        long live greenspan!
      • yllona
yes, i miss greenspan too. but he really was getting too old
      • ruaok
yeah, bummer for all of us.
      • BrianFreud
the executive branch however does have quite an impact upon foreign policy... and we simply don't even really seem to have any foreign policy, except perhaps to line the wallets of certain few interests before they're out of power
      • yllona had a boyfriend with a greenspan tattoo on his arm
      • ruaok nods at BrianFreud
      • ruaok
        woah. that's geeky
      • petros
        Or just nuts
      • ruaok
      • snarlydwarf has quit
      • yllona
ruaok: yeah, but he was making that *good* money on wall street, and greenspan was his hero ;)
      • ruaok
        heh.
      • Muzzz
        ruaok: AWESOME
      • ruaok
I love the fact that when the media figured out that he was gonna wear his good tie when announcing rate changes, he started mixing up his ties to throw them off the scent.
      • yllona
ruaok: greenspan meeting were our favorite form of entertainment when i was working financial services
      • chefkoch has quit
      • in DC, all things stop when he was broadcast
      • greenspan loved to ply with people's minds -- especially the press
      • Creap joined the channel
      • and most importantly greenspan was a jazz musician and one point in his very long career :-D
      • BrianFreud
I honestly, though, really would like to see someone - anyone - stop all the politics for once and really focus on fixing things. It's so bad here, any clients I was doing work for have gone out of business - within a half mile of me now, the only places left unshuttered are 1 gas station, 1 convenence store, 1 hospital, and the cheese factory. The economy really is already tanked here
      • yllona
up north i can believe it. it's a mfg town up there
      • ruaok
        :-o
      • BrianFreud
yes, and they've begun laying people off
      • brick_ijigg
too often people think "fixing things" mean "making things the way they used to be"
      • Aval0n
are there any audiophiles in here?
      • I have some questions on speaker placement
      • yllona
major layoffs are predicted in LA too.
      • petros
BrianFreud: That conundrum can be explained in several ways. My favourite being the one a swedish rapper used.
      • BrianFreud
brick_ijigg: I don't really care how they fix it, but my street is *the* main street in south buffalo, and it's almost entirely boarded up buildings
      • yllona
Aval0n: first what kind of speakers and what kind of room
      • petros
"Everybody wants to go to heaven, but noone wants to die"
      • Aval0n
yllona: ok well currently I have some JBL bookshelf speakers
      • but I am getting some inwalls from my sister
      • they were like $200.00 per speaker
      • my problem is the wall that my plasma is on is not big
      • petros
        Nobody likes great changes
      • Aval0n
so I am wondering where to put them
      • yllona
Aval0n: what kind of room? windows, ceiling height etc
      • BrianFreud
I don't really care if the changes are small or great - I just want to have enough places around able to stay in business, so I can find work...
      • Aval0n
      • 9 ft celings
      • I am wondering if I should put the front inwalls in the ceiling instead
      • you can see in those pics the bookshelf speakers I have currently
      • yllona
oh, i wouldn't do that. moving will become a PITA
      • Aval0n
        PITA?
      • oh
      • yllona
        pain in the ass
      • Aval0n
what do you mean by moving?
      • the work moving the speakers?
      • yllona
        if you move house
      • Aval0n
i'm not planning on moving any time soon
      • my wife _HATES_ having those booshelves
      • yllona
and yes moving the speakers too
      • chefkoch joined the channel
      • Aval0n
you can see how I have very limited space to the right and left of the plasma
      • chefkoch
chefkoch is now known as chefkoch_AW
      • chefkoch_AW
chefkoch_AW is now known as chefkoch
      • Aval0n
and if I put the inwalls where the L and R front channels are now.. they would be facing eachother and I don't know how that would sound.
      • yllona
well. i'd wall-mount rather than in-wall. it's messy, and if you make a mistake... your wife will really be angry then
      • get some inexpensive hooks, and test speaker placement
      • *inexpensive wall hooks
      • really that's what i do. test speaker in diffrent parts of the room. over a few eeks.
      • Aval0n
        well there's the thing
      • I OWN the in-wall speakers
      • yllona
*few weeks, with diffrent types of music.
      • Aval0n
        and want to install them
      • yllona
        i'm not a fan of in-wall, unless they're installed in a renovation/build-out. but that's just me
      • Aval0n
they sounded amazing in my sister's house
      • like I said they weren't cheap
      • $200,00 per speaker
      • I don't know the specs on them however.
      • yllona
cheap is relative when talking about speakers
      • but before you mount them in wall, get the wall hooks and test placement. it will save you *lots* of grief
      • Aval0n
        that's not a horrible idea
      • yllona
if you have to patch a wall... just don't go there
      • also if you live in a townhouse or duplex (not a free standing building). you'll need to check with your homeowners and or renters agreement about in-wall spakers
      • *speakers
      • Aval0n
        i'm a home owner
      • yllona
as the sound/bass. etc can carry thru to your neighbor.
      • hangy has quit
      • yes, but is it a free standing building?
      • Aval0n
        yes....
      • yllona
        okay, no worries there then
      • Aval0n
        ;)
      • yllona
just your wife's wrath, if you screw up and leave a hole in the wall :P
      • Aval0n
        haha
      • it's ok I remodeled house for a while
      • the work isn't the part i'm worried about
      • yllona
it happens -- get the wall hooks
      • Spaztik has quit
      • also even tho you're not moving anytime soon, in wall fixtures typically "convey" (transfer) when you sell the house -- at least here in the US
      • Aval0n
unless you take them out before you put the house up for sale
      • the ones I have I ripped out of my sister's house before she put it up for sale
      • yllona
take then out and patch the walls yes
      • ruaok
here is the next sign: "Taking the gross domestic product of both economies in 2007, the combined GDP of the 15 countries which use the euro overtook that of the United States when the European currency surged to a record high of more than $1.56 per euro."
      • yllona
i agree that euros are the smart move. but where to put them?
      • ruaok
in a bank in europe. :)
      • yllona
all the european banks have been hammered as well.
      • Creap has quit
      • barclays, RSC, HSBC etc
      • you could get crazy and go with lloyds, but then... your mattress is prb'ly an equally good option
      • brick_ijigg
ruaok, GDP at purchasing power parity is usually a better measure of relative economic power (imho)
      • because of course the above happens when you don't account for exchange rate changes
      • yllona
        brick_ijigg: yep.
      • ruaok
I'm not squabbling over any one point, but the overall trend.

several years ago my onetime boss told me the U.S. was a "sinking ship" and that he was moving to brazil.
      • hope his country inn is doing good business there :)
      • yllona
ruaok: talk to a professional. i struggled with this same issue after selling a home.
      • where to put the money?
      • [ZeRO] joined the channel
      • petros
Another home. Land, diversified papers, stocks and bonds.
      • Maybe a Jimmy Buffetish islang.
      • yllona
i'm just happy to have unloaded property before the real-eatate crash here. but my financial advior issued avery stern warning almost 4 years ago.
      • petros
yllona: What were the average drop in prices during the current crash?
      • yllona
she sold all her property too. another home is not the answer now
      • petros
        percentage wise
      • yllona
        petros: 25-50% sometimes higher
      • petros
        WOW. That was bad economics
      • yllona
homes in Southern california are at an all-time low -- except for "luxury homes". the biggest problem is that noone can get ffinancing
      • brick_ijigg
        "all-time" is quite an exaggeration
      • yllona
cali, florida, the sun belt. it's really bad all-over
      • brick_ijigg: it's the lowest since the began tracking the numbers accurately
      • brick_ijigg
i have no clue when you think that was
      • yllona
brick_ijigg: check the LA Times, it's front-page news
      • one sec
      • brick_ijigg
        i read it every day.

      • brick_ijigg
        19% below their peak, sure
      • yllona
also down 19% in a year, like a said
      • "Home values in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, for example, plunged by about 21% last month compared with year-earlier figures."
