i'm trying to add a arcustic guitar AR to http://musicbrainz.org/release/8dbf89dc-ff9e-45e3…
      • 2008-03-02 06242, 2008

      • akiel
there is already a electric guitar AR (all ARs already from me)
      • 2008-03-02 06243, 2008

      • akiel
but an arcustic guitar AR of someone who has already a electric guitar AR won't be added
      • 2008-03-02 06210, 2008

      • akiel
even the edit event is not filed
      • 2008-03-02 06238, 2008

      • srotta
You'll have to edit the existing AR.
      • 2008-03-02 06204, 2008

      • akiel
        aha thanks
      • 2008-03-02 06225, 2008

      • srotta
So if Mats Persson has played electric and acoustic guitar, edit that AR and add another instrument into it.
      • 2008-03-02 06211, 2008

      • akiel
ah I see I always thought that "Add another instrument" means adding another instrument to the tree of availible instruments :-)
      • 2008-03-02 06244, 2008

      • Freso
akiel: Heh. No. That's a completely different process. :
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

so I added the instruments arcustic guitar and mandolin to Jonas Isacsson (http://musicbrainz.org/show/edit/?editid=8432107) but I can't see them
      • 2008-03-02 06250, 2008

      • akiel
is that because I edited an pending edit?
      • 2008-03-02 06247, 2008

      • Freso
akiel: It's because you edited an already existing AR.
      • 2008-03-02 06203, 2008

      • Freso
akiel: Until that AR is voted through, the shown AR won't be updated.
      • 2008-03-02 06232, 2008

      • Freso
(It should have that yellowish background colour though.)
      • 2008-03-02 06200, 2008

      • akiel
        yes its yellow
      • 2008-03-02 06225, 2008

      • akiel
do you like to vote if I upload the relevant page of the booklet?

      • Tykling
I am about to add the label "Virgin Records Scandinavia" which by the way doesn't exist anymore. What should I choose for country, since scandinavia covers several countries but not at all worldwide ?
      • 2008-03-02 06202, 2008

      • akiel
      • 2008-03-02 06219, 2008

      • Tykling
yes, I just put that url in the edit note actually :)
      • 2008-03-02 06238, 2008

      • Tykling
but it says virgin records scandinavia on the cd cover here
      • 2008-03-02 06258, 2008

      • akiel
So I never added a label by myself - so I'm not experienced in that thing
      • 2008-03-02 06235, 2008

      • akiel
hmm I think AB is an addon like Inc. or GmbH (Germany)
      • 2008-03-02 06241, 2008

      • Tykling
this is a cd from 1992 which is in the late years of the label, they might have called themselves Virgin Scandinavia AB before, I dunno
      • 2008-03-02 06251, 2008

      • Tykling
        yes it is
      • 2008-03-02 06255, 2008

      • mudcrow
i'm very much against adding regional record companies as labels. the imprint is the same as every other virgin release
      • 2008-03-02 06205, 2008

      • Freso
akiel: If you upload a scan of the booklet, I'll vote.
      • 2008-03-02 06224, 2008

      • Tykling
ok, but it seems there is a whole bunch of other country specific virgin labels added
      • 2008-03-02 06231, 2008

      • Tykling
so I figured that was the way to do it
      • 2008-03-02 06201, 2008

      • mudcrow
Virgin used the same imprint/label/logo worldwide, regional record companies ARE NOT labels
      • 2008-03-02 06222, 2008

      • akiel
fresco: yes I will do it
      • 2008-03-02 06226, 2008

      • Tykling
ok then, I'll add it under "Virgin (UK/Worldwide)"
      • 2008-03-02 06216, 2008

      • mudcrow
discogs is about to remove all those bogus regional labels, they finally realised that record company does not equal imprint/label and adding all those bogus label (country) entries has really fucked up their data
      • 2008-03-02 06244, 2008

      • akiel
Tykling: I have the Crash! Boom! Bang! album from Roxette here: there you can see the EMI imprint and a copyright from 1994 EMI Svenska AB. Maybe that is a comparable situation.
      • 2008-03-02 06228, 2008

      • akiel
Tykling: what LC do you have on the CD? I have LC-0542 here on Crash! B... ant that is from EMI Group not EMI Sweden.
      • 2008-03-02 06240, 2008

      • akiel
But unfortunately http://musicbrainz.org/release/8dbf89dc-ff9e-45e3… has also a EMI Music Sweden release event (and that one not edited by me)
      • 2008-03-02 06240, 2008

      • 2008-03-02 06219, 2008

      • mudcrow
EMI also used the same label/logo/imprint worldwide. I think all EMI music/record labels should be merged into one entry
      • 2008-03-02 06206, 2008

      • akiel
        mudcrow: ok lets start :-)
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

      • mudcrow
all these regional offices has already caused releases to be entered under the wrong regional office. look at EMI argentina
      • 2008-03-02 06234, 2008

      • akiel
Tykling: does your release have an entry in Discogs? I like always to link here is possible. Sovoters have a start to look around if this is all ok.
      • 2008-03-02 06255, 2008

      • Tykling
        no it doesn't
      • 2008-03-02 06220, 2008

      • Tykling
but I added a picture of the cover in an edit note ;)
      • 2008-03-02 06230, 2008

      • mudcrow
akiel, I'm not going near all those labels. I'm managed to resist the temptation to merge them as I see fit so far.
      • 2008-03-02 06240, 2008

      • akiel
Tykling: unfortunately I can't vote on yours because I don't know anything about that
      • 2008-03-02 06249, 2008

      • Tykling
a bit blurry though but it should do the trick :)
      • 2008-03-02 06227, 2008

      • Tykling
thats fine, it'll expire sooner or later and get added anyway, not a whole lot of focus on 15 years old danish hiphop :>
      • 2008-03-02 06257, 2008

      • akiel
mudcrow: I don't plan such a merge either. I'm releatively new here and I have already some pending controversely things.
      • 2008-03-02 06234, 2008

      • akiel
Right now I asking myself if I'm legally allowed to place scans of a booklet/sleeve/cover online.
      • 2008-03-02 06249, 2008

      • srotta
mudcrow: I'm adding release events to pretty much only Finnish releases. I know their label, release years etc. but I have no idea how to handle foreign releases I have.
      • 2008-03-02 06204, 2008

      • mudcrow
srotta, same way as Finnish. look at the logo, the logo is usually the label/imprint/brand.
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

      • srotta
mudcrow: Yeah, but where do I add the label?
      • 2008-03-02 06250, 2008

      • srotta
When was it released, and where?
      • 2008-03-02 06200, 2008

      • akiel
Fresco: I the US there is a fair use doctrine. But I'm in Germany here and a inside of a booklet shouln't even count as fair use. So I don't think I can upload a scan of the booklet.
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

      • mudcrow
i'm not sure i understand what you mean srotta
      • 2008-03-02 06258, 2008

      • srotta
This becomes more pronounced with second hand releases, but the record companies don't usually celebrate the release in Finland by announcing the exact date.
      • 2008-03-02 06252, 2008

      • mudcrow
you dont need an exact date, just the year is good enough.
      • 2008-03-02 06227, 2008

      • srotta
I guess it's partly me being pedantic and partly the difference in views when you're in some bigger market.
      • 2008-03-02 06245, 2008

      • srotta
We don't have release dates, albums come here when someone has time to ship us a box.

is there a special barcode I can use when there is no barcode on the cover ?
      • 2008-03-02 06204, 2008

      • Tykling
so people won't think it is missing from the release
      • 2008-03-02 06221, 2008

      • akiel
Tykling: you can leave the barcode blank
      • 2008-03-02 06245, 2008

      • srotta
So I don't like adding a separate release event for Finland, when the release is usually the same as in UK, Germany or Nordic countries.
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

      • akiel
        Tykling: ah ok - I don't know
      • 2008-03-02 06211, 2008

      • mudcrow
srotta if they are shipped in then they probably dont count as a Finnish release, just distribution in Finland
      • 2008-03-02 06213, 2008

      • Tykling
yes I know, but instead of leaving the label blank in case of selv-finances releases, you can use the special purpuse label "[No label]" - was just wondering if we had a similar thing for barcodes
      • 2008-03-02 06221, 2008

      • srotta
        mudcrow: Exactly.

      • 2008-03-02 06247, 2008

      • srotta
        akiel: Typically no.
      • 2008-03-02 06227, 2008

      • Freso
        Tykling: There isn't.
      • 2008-03-02 06244, 2008

      • srotta
But that's exactly the point - if I have a release, and there are a dozen release events already in MB with no label/barcode/etc information, I don't think it makes sense to add another one for Finland, but I wouldn't know where to add the label info either.
      • 2008-03-02 06249, 2008

      • juhae
Some releases are completely legit and don't have barcodes at all...

        ok Freso thank you

      • juhae
        mudcrow, Same here
      • 2008-03-02 06235, 2008

      • akiel
srotta: but why do you have a separate label than if its only an import?
      • 2008-03-02 06246, 2008

      • mudcrow
you have to pay for registration of a barcode, a lot of companies dont want the expence
      • 2008-03-02 06242, 2008

      • juhae
And if the records aren't mostly sold in big stores who utilize the barcodes, there's not much of point in getting one
      • 2008-03-02 06254, 2008

      • mudcrow
and a lot of large stores use their own barcodes anyway. many a (un)happy hour have I spent sticking some stupid stores barcodes on products we distributed
      • 2008-03-02 06229, 2008

      • mudcrow
anyway, unless a release has a unique cat number for Finland, they should be considered releases from the country they originated. just distributed/imported to Finland which in itself is not a release event
      • 2008-03-02 06200, 2008

      • srotta
        Yeah. That's why I don't add the events :P
      • 2008-03-02 06230, 2008

      • akiel
srotta: but than I don't get your point abut adding a label - if there is no separate label than what?
      • 2008-03-02 06223, 2008

      • srotta
akiel: Lot of releases in db don't have label information. I can't add that, because even if I have the release, I don't know where to put it.

Does someone knows more about the covers at Discogs? After reading: http://www.discogs.com/help/submission-guidelines… they say: "Copyrighted or illegal images will be deleted on sight, and the user held accountable for their inclusion." But nearly all covers at Discogs are copyrighted!
      • 2008-03-02 06204, 2008

not that hard to check which country is the label from
      • 2008-03-02 06234, 2008

      • mudcrow
akiel: that relates to images of artists. You can use publicity photos but not copyrighted images. So you cant scan a magazine image and post that
      • 2008-03-02 06251, 2008

      • luks
or just add it as [unknown country], if you add cat# and barcode, people will quickly fix the country
      • 2008-03-02 06229, 2008

      • akiel
srotta: ah ok you like to add the label to existion release events and don't know the country. How to get the country is also not very clear to me.

but bear in mind that any edit you make at discogs will probably not get voted on for months/years. And no-one seems to know exactly what all the changed proposals to go live on 4th of March are and what effects on the queue they will bring about,

and a large amount of their long-term mods have quit, gone on strike or are up in arms over cencorship and forced changes

nope, they removed as moderators some long term mods for daring to question and disagree with the management team, they actively now delete posts from the forums that disagree with them, ignore the majority of questions.

instead of just capitalizing the first letter and names in a sentence
      • 2008-03-02 06209, 2008

      • nikki
yes, but it doesn't capitalise others

the latest suggestion from the discogs manager Nik was to no longer insist entries had a tracklisting, obviously a good way of building a release database
