      • Aankhen`` has quit
      • it would effectively give Brits the same rights as Merkins
      • with regard to ripping CD's
      • CatCat
        uh
      • its illegal (i mean really illegal, not ju8st iffy) to rip your own cd's?
      • Owners would not be allowed to sell or give away their original discs once they had made a copy. <-- thats rediculus
      • inhouseuk
        at the moment, yes
      • CatCat
        hmm
      • wel its a start i suppose, that they are thinking about letting peopel be legal XD
      • who is merkins?
      • inhouseuk
        americans
      • CatCat
        heh
      • inhouseuk
        it's slang
      • they are already allowed to rip their own CD's
      • CatCat
i dont know if it is illegal or not here
      • i dont think they care at all
      • i mean, who is going to know/botherto stop it
      • luks
are they allowed to listen to them? :)
      • CatCat
        LOL
      • LotR
over here it is even legal to make copies for your friends :)
      • CatCat
        not in the CAR
      • luks
here you can make copies only for yourself
      • CatCat
        MBChatLogger: off
      • MBChatLogger
        is not logging
      • is logging
      • CatCat
it asumes you'll be late with delivering it before you've even rented it
      • if you pay, you might as well keep the darned thing :p
      • LotR
why can't a library charge for you checking out a book/cd/whatever?
      • CatCat
        or you know, buy it
      • uh becasue its a *library*?
      • :p
      • it defeats its purpouse
      • LotR
yes, but they have costs too. what's wrong with charging a few cents to cover the administrative costs?
      • juhae
knowledge is supposed to be public and for all, not for the financially privileged
      • CatCat
but hey, if our library had a donatino thing going on id defintiyl doante
      • ding juhae !
      • that remibnds me, i need to rent soem book about hmm.. something >D
      • LotR
you're paying for it one way or another anyway
      • CatCat
        you're on crack
      • juhae
        in taxation, yes
      • CatCat
        :)
      • juhae
but everyone is paying equally and according to their incomes
      • BrianG
        crack tax
      • inhouseuk
        given money to buy crack?
      • BrianG
taxing crack to buy library dvds
      • inhouseuk
        ah
      • LotR
juhae: so you're saying it's better people have to pay for something they never use, and you only pay part because they pay the rest?
      • nikki
CatCat: but if I don't take it back, they'll fine me, and if I don't pay that, they'll take me to court
      • inhouseuk
nikki: did you ever get tv licensing to give up chasing you?
      • juhae
LotR, if only the part who use library as much as i do would pay, we'd probably end up paying more that way
      • so being as poor as i am, yes
      • nikki
only when I left the flat I was in ;)
      • juhae
but that enables anyone to go into a library and get a book, and hopefully learn a thing or two
      • LotR
juhae: if they just charge for checking out, then you can still go in a library and read the book there...
      • nikki
I just don't see how renting a book being free but renting an audiobook version of the same thing costing 85p makes sense
      • LotR
juhae: I see your point, but getting all religious about it seems a bit excessive
      • nikki: they might be required to charge for that by the publisher of the audiobook..
      • nikki
it applies for anything audio though
      • if it's text, free, audio, 85p each
      • LotR
probably because all the publishers agreed on that, since they fear copying so much
      • inhouseuk
and I don't think the charge would apply to all people. I suspect poor sighted / blind people would get it free
      • nikki
yeah, if you're registered blind, you're exempt
      • £2.50 for a dvd...
      • hmm. here it says spoken word is £2
      • inhouseuk heads off to a 'business lunch' with his father
      • inhouseuk

      • warp
<LotR> over here it is even legal to make copies for your friends :)
      • that's not true.
      • (assuming with 'over here' you mean the netherlands).
      • LotR
AFAIK it is. you pay extra for blank media just so you can make copies.
      • oh right. you have to lend your friend the CD, and then he can make the copy legally
      • no wait, see the section 'Opdracht geven tot verveelvoudiging'
      • heh, ok. not for audio/video
      • warp
        yep
      • dalen has quit
      • the nice thing though, is that when YOU are making a 'thuiskopie', the source material doesn't have to be an original and/or legal copy.
      • luks
        it's same as here then
      • warp
so, all the mp3s and flacs on may harddisk are legal. i'm only engaging in illegal activity if i put them on a webpage on share them through bittorrent/limewire/etc...
      • s/may/my/
      • luks
you can for example even download anything from the internet as long as long you don't know you are downloading something illegal
      • and not sharing it, of course
      • warp
the 'as long you don't know' isn't relevant in dutch copyright law. if you're copying from an illegal source, only the person who gave you access to that source is breaking the law.
      • he/she is the one distributing from a private copy.

      • aCiD2
ha, I'm falling in love with emacs (please don't kill me :P) - and messing about with the config
      • canidae
think i got a knife somewhere around here i can stab you with...
      • aCiD2
        :P
      • I gave VIm enough of a chance, just didn't go with dvorak I think
      • luks
and vim doesn't have an irc client, after all, does it? :)
      • canidae
        nor minesweeper
      • Rondom
        and no web-browser....
      • aCiD2
I don't use the web browser
      • yet >.>
      • canidae
i tend to let linux be the os and not something else :p
      • aCiD2
well I hate xchat anyway, erc seems nice though
      • canidae
        irssi?
      • aCiD2
        irssi was good too
      • irssi and erc are the same to me - I'm not exactly a hardcore irc user

        aCiD2: what?
      • aCiD2
        warp, hmm?
      • warp
aCiD2: i've been using vim for two years, with dvorak.
      • aCiD2
Good for you :) I didn't find it comfortable though
      • CatCat
        been broken on qwerty
      • warp
i switched from emacs, where movement is ^F, ^B, ^N, ^P which didn't make much sense either ;)
      • aCiD2
At least I can remember them :)
      • what's vim, hjkl?
      • warp
aCiD2: if you need to 'remember' cursor movement keys, you're doing it wrong :)
      • aCiD2
you have to remember them when you're learning
      • CatCat
i dont think most norwegiasn even *know* there is anythign besides qwerty
      • aCiD2
I don't tihnk most *people* know anything but qwerty :P
      • CatCat
qwerty was designed for typewriters to prevent the keys from stickign to much togheter
      • aCiD2
        yup
      • CatCat
but its the evil i know
      • anythign eszle would be.. to hard to get into
      • i'd keep pressign the wrong keyds and it would drive me mad
      • aCiD2
the first month of dvorak was hell, ya
      • warp
dvorak doesn't make you significantly faster or anything.
      • juhae
i'm pretty sure someone has made a keyboard layout specifically writing norwegian too
      • CatCat
the kitchen beckons me, see ya'll laters
      • warp
it's just a tad more comfortable to me, and i make less typo's.
      • CatCat
        åæø
      • aCiD2
I'm about the same speed as I was in qwerty, and yea - way more comfortable and slightly typos
      • still end up typing like a 5 year old sometimes though, it seems
      • tata mo
      • canidae
rumour has it that norwegian programmers suffer less from damages using a keyboard as some of the more common keys used in coding ()[]{}<> are placed quite differently from english layouts
      • whether it's true i have no idea about, though
      • supposedly because we'll have to move our hands more :p
      • aCiD2 finds a picture
      • aCiD2
hmm, <> looks like quite a pinky stretch :)
      • warp
canidae: moving hands more is not always a benefit.
      • canidae
        i'm just saying there's a rumour about it :)
      • warp
        ok :)
      • canidae
i can also say i've ~never had troubles with my hands, and i'm on the computer 16 hours/day
      • i did get it once, but then i was coding in a highly mouse-oriented style
      • so it was most likely not the keyboard's fault
      • warp
i have, though nothing serious.. i do pay attention to any peculiar pains in fingers/hands/wrists/etc..
      • it _guess_ i naturally take enough breaks and such, that i don't need workrave or similar software.
      • canidae
used workrave when i did get troubles with my hand, it did help
      • that is, i started using it
