if an artist makes a song that sounds very much like another song (but uses different instruments / has some differences), is that a cover, or a remix?
I guess it's a cover, since that's what all existing relationships look like

ultramage: I would say if they took the original song and edited it to sound different, it's a remix, if they listened to the song/read the music/whatever and played it themselves, it's a cover
ultramage
hm
I'd need a definition of 'remix' to confirm that
Muzzz
It could be sampled too
ultramage
there are numerous tracks already marked as 'cover' in there, and I doubt any are a perfect reproduction of the original work
Muzzz
But that's more dance and drum n bass type stuff
nikki
a cover doesn't need to be a perfect copy...
how could it be?
MClemo
most of the bad covers try to be ;)
nikki
even so, different people will sing slightly different, different people will play instruments slightly different
ultramage
at best the tracks have the same 'motive' as the original work... but apart from that there's all sorts of deviations like added lyrics, changed instruments, a guitar solo in the middle and such
"based on" would better express the relationship
nikki
by that definition nothing would ever be a cover :P
ultramage
dunno, I'm not familiar with these terms ;)
MClemo
sounds like a cover to me
ultramage
alright~
nikki
well the covers I know of don't try and copy the original exactly, what would be the point in making an exact copy? people could just listen to the original if they wanted to listen to the original... I guess that means I don't listen to the bad covers MClemo knows of :P
lauri
welcome to the top 40
nikki
heh
lauri
"It sold once, let's get a boy band to do it Exactly! The! Same! and it'll sell again!"
Muzzz
*exactly the same, or as best as their whiny voices can handle. But don't worry, studio effects can take care of that for the most part
nikki
I can't really remember chart music, but even those covers sounded different to me... probably what Muzzz said :P
lauri
and the songs they pick to cover.. dear god
nikki giggles madly
who's bright idea was it to get an r&b girl singer to cover 'country roads'
and who the hell bought that enough to get it on the charts
Muzzz
With the way the top 40 is going these days it's more "oh let's sample these 3 songs which were fine on their own back in the day"
nikki giggles even more
lauri
they're into second generation sampling now
MClemo
put some "uuuh, baby"'s in it too!
lauri
rihanna samples michael jackson that sampled someone else
i forget who, yllona would know heh
Muzzz
I think the post is, chart music is crap
:P
*popint is
*point
lauri
oh it's ok
MClemo
I don't really follow the charts
lauri
like fast food
nikki totally has to go watch this cover/mash-up/insane thing now
just don't expect a gourmet meal from it, and it's enough if you aren't really paying attention
I'm seriously inspired to do a 'best of MB' weekly blog post
rounding up the more ridiculous in-edit-note wars that most of you are missing :)
MClemo
haha, that would be nice
lauri
only here could we generate 50 posts deciding if something is a mashup, a cover, a remix, sampling, or all of the above
MClemo
deciding? usually there's no decision at the end ;)
lauri
or one i just found "If a band member says the viking runes on their covers are a logo, and their band name is in latin script.... let's not believe them and vote no on the edits anyway!"
nikki
is that tyr or something?
lauri
it is
nikki
how did I guess...
lauri
hehe, let me find the edit, let's just mash that one through
