hello, just want to ask...

if an artist makes a song that sounds very much like another song (but uses different instruments / has some differences), is that a cover, or a remix?

I guess it's a cover, since that's what all existing relationships look like

ultramage: I would say if they took the original song and edited it to sound different, it's a remix, if they listened to the song/read the music/whatever and played it themselves, it's a cover

I'd need a definition of 'remix' to confirm that

It could be sampled too

there are numerous tracks already marked as 'cover' in there, and I doubt any are a perfect reproduction of the original work

But that's more dance and drum n bass type stuff

a cover doesn't need to be a perfect copy...

most of the bad covers try to be ;)

even so, different people will sing slightly different, different people will play instruments slightly different

at best the tracks have the same 'motive' as the original work... but apart from that there's all sorts of deviations like added lyrics, changed instruments, a guitar solo in the middle and such

"based on" would better express the relationship

by that definition nothing would ever be a cover :P

well the covers I know of don't try and copy the original exactly, what would be the point in making an exact copy? people could just listen to the original if they wanted to listen to the original... I guess that means I don't listen to the bad covers MClemo knows of :P

and the songs they pick to cover.. dear god

who's bright idea was it to get an r&b girl singer to cover 'country roads'

and who the hell bought that enough to get it on the charts

With the way the top 40 is going these days it's more "oh let's sample these 3 songs which were fine on their own back in the day"

they're into second generation sampling now

put some "uuuh, baby"'s in it too!

well we do normally copy the cover...

(I must add, they're one of the most mundane bands to see live. And I've had the unfortunate experience of having to stand through it twice)
