since many many releases can be several of them, and any one of them doesn't nail it down closely enough anyway.

No it's basically a maxi single of 4 songs with many remixes

(not that that's a requirement for singles, but I'm sure there are singles out there with lots of remixes of the same song)

The most common CD-single format as far as I know is one song, a bunch of remixes of that song, and then a different song.

I like when they put those alternate version in there. If they're going to charge alot for a single they should put some rare versions of the song in there too.

I like japanese singles because of that :).

although recently the big names are all releasing CD+DVD albums with all the videos on them too.

(which is even better).

I think that's a good solution to the "we're losing market share to iTunes and online downloads" Throw some cool videos on a cheap disc of plastic and suddenly buying the physical albums are alot more interesting to me.
