Hi all. Are there any command line tools for musicbrainz?

People have made some before, you may have some luck by searching the wiki, wiki.musicbrainz.com

Hmmm. When I looked before all I found was a bunch of comments from people who feel that MB is too interactive for a command line utility to work.
2009-02-24 05523, 2009
Muz
Nah, I distinctly remember someone making a CLI tagger. It may have been rather primitive but there was some work done towards it.

Munger
OK. I'll keep looking. I have just logged my collection into a mysql database, and was looking for a way to gather more info on unidentified tracks. Maybe I'll look at writing some code based on the musicbrainz library

muz: you have a server with unlimited bandwidth?
2009-02-24 05542, 2009
Muz
LotR: I do.
2009-02-24 05557, 2009
Muz
LotR: however, I don't have unlimited disk space.
2009-02-24 05520, 2009
Muz
Well, where unlimited == several hundred TB/month from what I've been told.
2009-02-24 05532, 2009
Muz
I'm never going to hit up that much bandwidth.
2009-02-24 05540, 2009
LotR
right
2009-02-24 05508, 2009
LotR wonders how muz got a deal like that
2009-02-24 05518, 2009

Most of the hardware is actually quite crappy though, hence why I'm not running much on it.

2009-02-24 05519, 2009

I wouldn't mind 250GB, only got 30GB in this.
2009-02-24 05539, 2009
Muz
Should hopefully get some moar space soon though.
2009-02-24 05531, 2009
LotR only has 12G on his newly acquired linode :)
2009-02-24 05520, 2009
Muz
12GB? That's not enough to run an MB mirror.
2009-02-24 05549, 2009

it is if you don't import closed edits

for a similar price I mean

CosmicRay
hi folks. HAve a question about Picard. How the heck do you set the sort order on either panel? It's pretty useless to have several hundred albums in random order
I googled and seemed to only come up with people with proxy issues
2009-02-24 05507, 2009
nikkeee
it's one of the things on that page :)#
2009-02-24 05520, 2009
CosmicRay
server too busy eh
2009-02-24 05533, 2009
CosmicRay
it's not one of the other ones
2009-02-24 05549, 2009
CosmicRay
I have folksonomy turned off, am using picard 0.11, and don't have network issues
2009-02-24 05553, 2009
nikkeee
try reloading a few times then
2009-02-24 05501, 2009
CosmicRay
well yes that does work
2009-02-24 05511, 2009
Muz
It's most likely the server being overloaded. :(
2009-02-24 05519, 2009
Muz
Which is a known, but yeah, just keep trying to refresh
2009-02-24 05521, 2009
CosmicRay
but due to the issue of not being able to sort, it is a royal PITA to pick out a few dozen entries out of a list of several hundred to reload
2009-02-24 05538, 2009
CosmicRay
it's not like I can just highlight them all at once
2009-02-24 05544, 2009
Muz
Sure you can, press Ctrl A
2009-02-24 05551, 2009
CosmicRay
uh no.
2009-02-24 05555, 2009
CosmicRay
because 20% continue to fail.
2009-02-24 05501, 2009
CosmicRay
that will just shift the failures to a different 20%.
2009-02-24 05510, 2009
LotR
CosmicRay: if the server is overloaded anyway, reloading a dozen at once is only going to make matters worse anyway :)
2009-02-24 05515, 2009
Muz
You only mentioned highlighting them all. :p
2009-02-24 05522, 2009
CosmicRay
I mean highlighting all that had failed.
2009-02-24 05531, 2009
Muz
But yeah, I thin kyou may need to ease up a bit and not feed Picard so many albums at once
2009-02-24 05536, 2009
CosmicRay
no, I am nowhere near evil enough to just hit reload on the entire list until it works ;-)
2009-02-24 05550, 2009
Muz
You'll be less prone to get server overloaded issues, and find it easier to pick out ones to reload.
2009-02-24 05550, 2009
CosmicRay
Muz: that would be great, but the ipod's file structure sucks.
2009-02-24 05554, 2009
nikkeee
you'd be trying for quite a long time anyway :/
2009-02-24 05502, 2009
Muz
Picard has a WS rate limiter too iirc.
2009-02-24 05510, 2009
Muz
So you can't really overload it with just one instance.
2009-02-24 05540, 2009
CosmicRay
Muz: ipod has a bunch of directories like f01, f5a, etc. files are scattered all over them. even files from a single album could be in 8 different directories, with no rhyme or reason
2009-02-24 05555, 2009
Muz
Yeah, iPod--.
2009-02-24 05546, 2009
CosmicRay
the other annoying thing about picard is that if I find one or two tracks in my collection that belong with an album that has already been tagged...
2009-02-24 05556, 2009
CosmicRay
I can hit the lookup button, or the send to tagger from the website...
2009-02-24 05505, 2009
CosmicRay
and nothing appears to happen because it's already in the list on the right pane.
2009-02-24 05507, 2009
CosmicRay
but where?!
2009-02-24 05515, 2009
CosmicRay
somewhere in the middle of 200 or 300 entries.
2009-02-24 05532, 2009
CosmicRay
I have tried every way I can think of to sort the right pane, and nothing seems to do it
2009-02-24 05546, 2009
brianfreud
the way I handle it, don't use ctrl-A
2009-02-24 05506, 2009
brianfreud
picard will move to releases by title, if you click on the release list and type a letter. (undocumented)
2009-02-24 05554, 2009
brianfreud
So just click on the list on the right, and hit "[" to move through the various NAT and [untitled], SPAs, and couldn't loads - and as you hit the couldn't loads, then you can just selectively reload them
2009-02-24 05534, 2009
CosmicRay
ah.
2009-02-24 05537, 2009

that is helpful.

what is the style guideline for volumne numbers when the original album used roman numerals?
2009-02-24 05512, 2009
CosmicRay
do we keep the roman numerals or use standard numbers?
2009-02-24 05521, 2009
CosmicRay
the volume style doesn't seem to address this
2009-02-24 05514, 2009

true. I guess, what's on the cover, so "[...], Volume <as on cover>"
2009-02-24 05525, 2009

but just a guess, don't know if this has been discussed before

MClemo: It inherits that from http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/SeriesNumberStyle - "These things are usually not changed by SeriesNumberStyle: Number schemes other than "1, 2, 3, ..."; e.g. "I, II, III, ...", "One, Two, Three, ...", "1st, 2nd, 3rd" or the use of foreign language numbers. "
