LotR: your average Macfag is "iTunes! Music" they don't think to browse the actual FS itself.
2009-02-03 03411, 2009
Muz
iTunes handles all that for them.
2009-02-03 03416, 2009
nikki
I don't see why they can't just scan it to find any new files and add them to the database it has
2009-02-03 03429, 2009
CatCat
most of them usic i want to take along is not in my itunes library
2009-02-03 03439, 2009
CatCat
plus things on the acer doesnt even have an itunes installed
2009-02-03 03457, 2009
CatCat
i want a mp3*player* not a mp3*database*
2009-02-03 03457, 2009
LotR
muz: yes, I understand that. what I don't understand is how that prevents it from also having a simple FS interface
2009-02-03 03459, 2009
CatCat
srsly
2009-02-03 03400, 2009
Muz
nikki: it also centralises things.
2009-02-03 03411, 2009
CatCat
don't get it
2009-02-03 03418, 2009
luks
CatCat: there are many programs you can use to upload songs to ipod
2009-02-03 03421, 2009
Muz
LotR: there are addons that allow for that. When you plug in the iPod the FS of the music files isn't even normally revealed iirc.
2009-02-03 03442, 2009
CatCat
luks: the thing is, i don't *want* to use a "program" i want to use folders and my mouse dtragging files :)
2009-02-03 03459, 2009
luks
CatCat: then you don't want an ipod :)
2009-02-03 03408, 2009
CatCat
and definitly no foldes on the damn player
2009-02-03 03413, 2009
CatCat
that's just disorganising
2009-02-03 03417, 2009
luks
I personally never browse my music files via filesystem
2009-02-03 03419, 2009
CatCat
luks: exactly :)
2009-02-03 03422, 2009
Muz
I personally prefer the idea of navigating my music via metadata as opposed to files and folders. Regardless of how impeccable my file sorting is.
2009-02-03 03426, 2009
warp
luks: i always do.
2009-02-03 03430, 2009
Muz
At least, on a portable media player.
2009-02-03 03448, 2009
Muz
Also makes it easier for adding andd finding albums obtained from other sources.
2009-02-03 03455, 2009
nikki
I have my files in the same structure as I play them, so it works either way for me
2009-02-03 03410, 2009
warp
Muz: the file system allows for arbitrary hierarchies, i use that.
2009-02-03 03411, 2009
CatCat
see thi is why i am at an upror, becasue everybody is like "metadata! "database!" i'm like "i want a PLAYER! D:"

The main thing that I like about my ipod is that it's 160GB.
2009-02-03 03424, 2009
luks
warp: but not for multiple views
2009-02-03 03434, 2009

2009-02-03 03445, 2009
Muz
160GB is not enough.
2009-02-03 03448, 2009
CatCat
uh
2009-02-03 03456, 2009
warp
luks: which i could solve on unix with some symlinking, but currently don't.
2009-02-03 03401, 2009

The interface is pretty easy to use, and I can use it through my trouser pocket (handy when cycling), and the browse-by-artist/album etc. works well. But that's mainly because my collection's fairly neat and tidy.
2009-02-03 03401, 2009
Muz
I want to throw all my music on there and forget about selecting what to take with me.
2009-02-03 03408, 2009
luks
warp: symlinks are hard to update
2009-02-03 03416, 2009
creature
I want the same thing as Muz, but I can just about do that in 160GB.
2009-02-03 03428, 2009
warp
luks: yes, it's not a very good solution, i agree :)
2009-02-03 03431, 2009
CatCat
i want to select what to take with me and thne not worry abotu what to select once it'spalying
2009-02-03 03449, 2009

2009-02-03 03400, 2009

CatCat
i'm never going to find the mp3 player with the specs *I* want
2009-02-03 03434, 2009
Muz
CatCat: iRivers let you browse by FS, drag and drop and have more space
2009-02-03 03444, 2009
CatCat
iriver?
2009-02-03 03444, 2009
Muz
Even if you don't want or need that extra space, so what that it's there?
2009-02-03 03447, 2009
Muz
Yes, iRiver.
2009-02-03 03453, 2009
Muz
Nothing to do with an iPod too.
2009-02-03 03454, 2009
CatCat

2009-02-03 03401, 2009
CatCat

2009-02-03 03404, 2009
Muz has a 5-6 year old one that works fine.
2009-02-03 03407, 2009
warp
luks: i'm not sure how to capture my arbitrary hierarchies in metadata though. i think i may be able to do that in musicbrainz through the folksonomy tags, but I only have part of my library tagged that way, so haven't given it much thought.
2009-02-03 03410, 2009
CatCat
