LotR: your average Macfag is "iTunes! Music" they don't think to browse the actual FS itself.
iTunes handles all that for them.
nikki
I don't see why they can't just scan it to find any new files and add them to the database it has
CatCat
most of them usic i want to take along is not in my itunes library
plus things on the acer doesnt even have an itunes installed
i want a mp3*player* not a mp3*database*
LotR
muz: yes, I understand that. what I don't understand is how that prevents it from also having a simple FS interface
CatCat
srsly
Muz
nikki: it also centralises things.
CatCat
don't get it
luks
CatCat: there are many programs you can use to upload songs to ipod
Muz
LotR: there are addons that allow for that. When you plug in the iPod the FS of the music files isn't even normally revealed iirc.
CatCat
luks: the thing is, i don't *want* to use a "program" i want to use folders and my mouse dtragging files :)
luks
CatCat: then you don't want an ipod :)
CatCat
and definitly no foldes on the damn player
that's just disorganising
luks
I personally never browse my music files via filesystem
CatCat
luks: exactly :)
Muz
I personally prefer the idea of navigating my music via metadata as opposed to files and folders. Regardless of how impeccable my file sorting is.
warp
luks: i always do.
Muz
At least, on a portable media player.
Also makes it easier for adding andd finding albums obtained from other sources.
nikki
I have my files in the same structure as I play them, so it works either way for me
warp
Muz: the file system allows for arbitrary hierarchies, i use that.
CatCat
see thi is why i am at an upror, becasue everybody is like "metadata! "database!" i'm like "i want a PLAYER! D:"
creature
The main thing that I like about my ipod is that it's 160GB.
luks
warp: but not for multiple views
CatCat
and like uh 8 gigs is eve to muc
h
warp
luks: yeah, that is a problem.
Muz
160GB is not enough.
CatCat
uh
warp
luks: which i could solve on unix with some symlinking, but currently don't.
creature
The interface is pretty easy to use, and I can use it through my trouser pocket (handy when cycling), and the browse-by-artist/album etc. works well. But that's mainly because my collection's fairly neat and tidy.
Muz
I want to throw all my music on there and forget about selecting what to take with me.
luks
warp: symlinks are hard to update
creature
I want the same thing as Muz, but I can just about do that in 160GB.
warp
luks: yes, it's not a very good solution, i agree :)
CatCat
i want to select what to take with me and thne not worry abotu what to select once it'spalying
Muz
creature: I'm thinking I should selotape a UPS, external harddrive and laptop together, and use that as my MP3 player. ¬_¬
CatCat
herlighet, my acer is 160 gigs
exactly
lol muz
creature
You could pay a cover band to follow you around all day.
warp
creature: haha, excellent
CatCat
whatever, take my problem as a joke, i don't care
CatCat shrughs
nikki
CatCat: I understand why it annoys you, it annoys me too that I haven't found what I want yet
CatCat
i'm never going to find the mp3 player with the specs *I* want
Muz
CatCat: iRivers let you browse by FS, drag and drop and have more space
CatCat
iriver?
Muz
Even if you don't want or need that extra space, so what that it's there?
Yes, iRiver.
Nothing to do with an iPod too.
CatCat
ok?
yea i figured
Muz has a 5-6 year old one that works fine.
warp
luks: i'm not sure how to capture my arbitrary hierarchies in metadata though. i think i may be able to do that in musicbrainz through the folksonomy tags, but I only have part of my library tagged that way, so haven't given it much thought.
CatCat
does it have screens?
screen*
CatCat googles
warp_ has quit
is thesound qulaity good there?
Muz
Yes, and it's good enough for I.
CatCat
hmmmmm
ooh fm radio
Muz
Yeah, there's that too, but I'll be damned if I use tht.
Seeing as I mostly use mine on the Underground.
CatCat
whats te differnce with flash and hardrive, (exept the obvious)
