I think manual would be the best option, less confusion that way for anyone who isn't a regular user.

I kinda envisioned a heading saying "recently used" which wouldn't be so confusing
but having them just randomly be listed without any reason could be confusing

I think anyone who would really benefit frrom this, would probably want complete control over what shows up. Recently used might be useful, but I envision it being more of a pain.
Of course that's all it really is right now, a vision :(
