what do i do when the sleeve of a classical music album says something like 'for viola (solo), flute, clarinet, celesta, percussion, violin and violoncello'?
i've got a big collection of unorganized music, and I just installed Ubuntu. I want to use Amarok as my music player, and I'm wondering if I should download musicbrainz first and run it. Also, is there someway to get MB or Amarok to sort my library's in one central folder/put it in proper folders etc? Or does it only change id3 tags?
2009-06-16 16702, 2009
navap
fuffalo: Check out the Picard tagger, it can organize your files into any file structure you want. (It also writes the ID3 tags of course)
2009-06-16 16746, 2009
navap
You don't *need* to "run" MB before Amarok, but wouldn't it be nice to play (properly) tagged music?
2009-06-16 16758, 2009
fuffalo
yes :>
2009-06-16 16703, 2009

I also want to have it nicely organized

ruaok: But not that big of a deal, personally I would be happy even if the image links were disabled. My biggest beef with how it is right now is the fact that clicking on an image returns an error (and two footers, yuck :( ).

2009-06-16 16753, 2009

fuffalo
hmm, can i not us musicbrainz on a network drive/
2009-06-16 16719, 2009
navap
fuffalo: To give you an idea, by default Picard will organize your files using the following format: $if2(%albumartist%,%artist%)/%album%/$num(%tracknumber%,2) %title%

fuffalo
navap, can i use musicbrainz with a network drive? I can't figure out how
2009-06-16 16732, 2009
navap
fuffalo: You should be able to just drag the files into Picard, or use File>Add.
2009-06-16 16744, 2009
fuffalo
file>add doesn't show my network drive
2009-06-16 16719, 2009
fuffalo
and i can't seem to just drag it
2009-06-16 16742, 2009
navap
File>Add doesn't show your network drive? That's odd.. What happens when you browse to /mnt or wherever your drive is mounted?
2009-06-16 16727, 2009
fuffalo
it's an SMB share

alastairp
do you know what version?
2009-06-16 16717, 2009

9.04 I believe? The latest
2009-06-16 16724, 2009
alastairp
right
2009-06-16 16745, 2009
alastairp
I think you can get to smb shares from that - I suspect picard won't support it natively
2009-06-16 16738, 2009
alastairp
go to ~/.gvfs

2009-06-16 16747, 2009
fuffalo
alright so i ahve all my music in as unmatched files
2009-06-16 16702, 2009
fuffalo
if i'm reading the quickstart right, i should click lookup first, then when that's done, i should click cluster?
2009-06-16 16734, 2009
fuffalo
is that close to accurate?
2009-06-16 16708, 2009
navap
Other way around I think. Click cluster, click on the new cluster, and click lookup.
2009-06-16 16731, 2009
fuffalo
hmm don't i want it to find out information before I cluster?
2009-06-16 16730, 2009
navap
Clicking lookup actually quries the MB database to find a match for the information that Picard has on your files. Clustering just groups tracks that may belong in the same album together so that a query can be more accurate.
2009-06-16 16703, 2009
navap
I think looking up a cluster also passes the number of tracks in the cluster (album) along in the query.
2009-06-16 16732, 2009
fuffalo
ahh ok
2009-06-16 16742, 2009
fuffalo
i went from 2600 unmatched to 800
2009-06-16 16710, 2009
fuffalo
so now i should do a lookup on everything?
2009-06-16 16715, 2009
fuffalo
and then anything still unmatched, i should try a scan?
2009-06-16 16741, 2009
navap
If you have the time(/patience) click scan, it will scan your file and match the track using an audio fingerprint to the MB database. Clicking lookup only matches using the tags that Picard sees.
2009-06-16 16702, 2009
navap
Clicking scan on a cluster will scan all the files in the cluster one by one.
2009-06-16 16725, 2009
fuffalo
ahh ok
