Reading chatlogs, text files, etc. is so much more pleasant (in cases where monospacing is not important) since I changed my browser's default font from Courier New. Currently using Georgia.

hi
2009-01-19 01913, 2009
grirgz
why picard dont fill the genre field ? is it because there is no info for this artist or a limitation (or ?) ?
2009-01-19 01958, 2009
Wizzcat
you can enable folksonomy tags in options
2009-01-19 01923, 2009
Wizzcat
however if you want genre you're better off getting the last.fm plugin since few songs on mbz have tags
2009-01-19 01925, 2009
SenRepus
for the most part of its life Musicbrainz has not supported genre because it isnt a factual data
2009-01-19 01948, 2009
SenRepus
one might call this techno while another might call it dance or electronic or happy hardcore
2009-01-19 01900, 2009
Zharf
Wizzcat, and most songs on last.fm have crap tags
2009-01-19 01903, 2009
SenRepus
the genre part of MB is rather new

Zharf: sure, but it's not like there's many better alternatives :)

2009-01-19 01915, 2009
grirgz
how do you browse your music collection ?
2009-01-19 01923, 2009
Zharf
grirgz, with cd and ls
2009-01-19 01927, 2009
grirgz
i mean when there is a lot of artits
2009-01-19 01906, 2009

grirgz: I use foobar2000 which indexes my music, just a matter of searching
2009-01-19 01908, 2009

i can't find easily and quickly something to play without genres
2009-01-19 01934, 2009

2009-01-19 01941, 2009

when i'm hurry, i just take 30 random songs of 30 random artist of reggae roots (for example)
2009-01-19 01939, 2009
Zharf
hurry?
2009-01-19 01943, 2009

I can't really listen to music in random order
2009-01-19 01908, 2009
grirgz
when i need to go fast
2009-01-19 01908, 2009
Zharf
I listen to one album at a time
2009-01-19 01955, 2009
Zharf
an album is one song even if it's spread into many
I tend to want to stick to one musical style at a time, it's a bit annoying going from trash metal thtough folk to video game soundtracks
2009-01-19 01906, 2009
Zharf
I usually end up listening to a whole discography of an artist from first album to last
2009-01-19 01916, 2009
Zharf
especially the case with led zeppelin and jean michel jarre
2009-01-19 01927, 2009
grirgz
yes me too, but when i listened to the artist for 3 weeks, i can't listen more to it, so i listen to another artist, etc. After some time, i dont want to listen to each tracks of each artist sequencialy, i prefer mix some artists of same genre to have good vibes =)
2009-01-19 01923, 2009
Zharf
if I mix the order of songs then juts before a song ends, I'll start going around the next song in original order and then get confused when something else is played
hopefully weds or thurs. Had to place the order again today - NewEgg voided the first because they had "issues verifying payment"??? (Figuring they tried a $0 charge to Paypal, which obviously broke - used the cc for the $0.00 ba;ance to finish the order this time).
2009-01-19 01920, 2009
ruaok
ah.
2009-01-19 01934, 2009
brianfreud
Their system still req's a payment method, even when the amount owed == 0 :P
2009-01-19 01939, 2009
ruaok
newegg is a bit silly when it comes to anything but shipping you shit.
2009-01-19 01941, 2009
ruaok
oh well.
2009-01-19 01948, 2009
brianfreud
yup
2009-01-19 01950, 2009
ruaok
how is the js graft looking?
2009-01-19 01929, 2009
brianfreud
"That'll be $8.90 to RMA and ship back that $14.00 DOA adaptor card we shipped you last week" :P
2009-01-19 01956, 2009
brianfreud
looking like a total bitch... slow going, atm - almost all of the js is totally undocumented, no comments, no anything
2009-01-19 01909, 2009
brianfreud
" * Document Me" everywhere
2009-01-19 01924, 2009
Wizzcat makes a snarky comment about open source software
2009-01-19 01949, 2009
ruaok
brianfreud: i was afraid of that.
2009-01-19 01905, 2009
brianfreud
So right now, I'm just trying to figure out what code is used on any given page.
2009-01-19 01923, 2009
brianfreud
Then going to go through, page by page, /root/* in tt, and try to add them in in a semi-generic way, so the .tt's don't get too mangled trying to hack this stuff in
2009-01-19 01938, 2009
brianfreud
There's also 4 scripts still not in the tt branch that are in that last RELEASE branch.
2009-01-19 01910, 2009
brianfreud
3 I think are from ratings and collections, so they ought to be being added back in soon, but jsvoting.js I think is much older.
what you just described, did you cover GC suite, the rest of the scripts or both?
2009-01-19 01940, 2009
brianfreud
everything
2009-01-19 01955, 2009
ruaok
k.
2009-01-19 01917, 2009
ruaok
one of luk's thoughts was to redo a lot of the non guess case js to jquery.
2009-01-19 01932, 2009
ruaok
which is an interesting thought.
2009-01-19 01949, 2009
ruaok
how does the landscape change if we were to ditch everything but the edit suite?
2009-01-19 01903, 2009
brianfreud
well, as I'd said, I haven't played with jquery before. I was looking at it, and it looks... very "bells and whistles" type of code?
2009-01-19 01947, 2009
Wizzcat
for dom manipulation, which I presume most of hte non-gc stuff is, it's really quite fast and easy to work with
2009-01-19 01916, 2009
ruaok
well, jquery isn't so much the question.
2009-01-19 01917, 2009
brianfreud
It seems very ajax-y, which would be spiffy for us in the long term, but for basic things like, oh, say, the url fixer for AR's, I haven't yet caught on to how a jquery version would be much different than a basic js version
2009-01-19 01932, 2009
ruaok
what I am trying to answer is if we should port or re-code the non-edit suite portions.
2009-01-19 01953, 2009
ruaok
remember that jquery makes many things easier as Wizzcat suggests.
2009-01-19 01903, 2009
Wizzcat
brianfreud: well you wouldn't really have to port that code, just the hooks
2009-01-19 01921, 2009
brianfreud
well, if we could get the js coding portion of the dev community working on it as a group, then yes, it would be better done that way.
2009-01-19 01945, 2009
ruaok
are you planning on making it to the dev chat?
2009-01-19 01951, 2009
brianfreud
yes, I'll be there
2009-01-19 01957, 2009
ruaok
great.
2009-01-19 01932, 2009
ruaok
there are a lot of interested people hacking right now. I can't wait for us to figure out how to tackle the release/js and release groups.
2009-01-19 01911, 2009
brianfreud
for the "js devs", I'm thinking of me, jugdish, murdos, Muz, etc - all the GM users... excluding luks, as I figure he's already got plenty w/o worrying about js at the same time :P
2009-01-19 01906, 2009
ruaok
I think that would make sense.
2009-01-19 01920, 2009
brianfreud
if it's just me, or only maybe 2 of us, for the time frame we have, merely hacking in, then porting / rewriting in the future makes more sense to me.
2009-01-19 01904, 2009
brianfreud
If it's a larger group of us, more like the server code folks (nowadays), port / rewrite makes more sense to think we can pull off, with or without GC
2009-01-19 01914, 2009
brianfreud
I just don't want to get us into a situation where the js dev team is the limiting factor, where everything else is 99% working, but the js is still buggy enough to delay live release of tt
2009-01-19 01933, 2009
ruaok
understood.
2009-01-19 01943, 2009
ruaok
that's why I am trying to gauge the amount of work it would take to get this done.
2009-01-19 01910, 2009
ruaok
part of me is thinking that we if have lots of JS hassles, we might want to really think about releasegroups.
2009-01-19 01926, 2009
ruaok
cuz then we have two longer running tasks.
2009-01-19 01940, 2009
ruaok
which if we do it right could complete near the same time.
2009-01-19 01953, 2009
brianfreud
well, tbh, my sense is that a full js rewrite, even w/o the suite, is a project almost on par with the tt rewrite in size.
2009-01-19 01921, 2009
brianfreud
we have a lot more js running in tiny little ways on each page than it seems, when you just look at the page...
2009-01-19 01923, 2009
ruaok
I disagree.
2009-01-19 01941, 2009
ruaok
a recode of JS without the suite would be pretty fast I think.
2009-01-19 01909, 2009
brianfreud
well, some of it is bork, doing things that don't have to be done with js - and are better done without it
2009-01-19 01930, 2009
brianfreud is thinking of the code to resize and position album art on release listings, as an example
2009-01-19 01900, 2009
brianfreud
figuring what is just bork is part of what I'm doing now, as any of that we don't want / need to port anyhow, however we do it.
2009-01-19 01932, 2009
Wizzcat
resize album art?
2009-01-19 01945, 2009
brianfreud
basically "do nothing" code that just never got taken out
