I imagine it would depend on how long it will take to get enough PUIDs into the DB to supplant TRMs, which would depend on how easy it's made to add PUIDs to the DB, ...
      • Nyght
MartinRudat: I would have to be able to take the alternately attached puid (that music iP attaches to the song) and be able to put those in without having to reanalyze
      • g0llum
        quick question:
      • Nyght
        I could have a good 20,000 puid's up in a very short time. ;)
      • g0llum thinks the link color on mb.org is too similar to the regular text
      • MartinRudat blinks, and wonders why the link Added_some is in http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/JapaneseArtists ... nothing else wants Added_some as a page (as far as WantedPages is concerned)...
      • g0llum
        what do you think?
      • MartinRudat
I'd un-link it, but for some reason my browser toasts japanese text...
      • yalaforge
g0llum: on my laptop screen they are *very* similar
      • Nyght
        which link color g0llum?
      • MartinRudat
hmm... well, yes, and well, no...
      • yes, it's similar to the main text colour, but no, it would probably be distracting if it's too di-similar to the main text colour...
      • yalaforge
other colours on MB are almost impossible to differentiate on cheap TFTs, too. like the 'pending moderation' colour, which is pretty much invisible
      • g0llum
        Nyght: of all the links
      • MartinRudat
        s/i-/is-/
      • g0llum
i'm trying to put some more documentation links into the page texts
      • but it won't help if you don't even notice that these are links :-)
      • MartinRudat
        ...theme/skin? =)
      • g0llum
the easiest way would be to underline them
      • but that goes not well with the design
      • yalaforge
at least it would be the traditional way for displaying links
      • Nyght
WEll it looks like there was a decent amount of thought for not too high contrasting colors the pages aren't hard on the eyes, but the only place I have difficulty is on the left column. The grey and "purplish" are sometimes difficult to differentiate, but you wouldn't want to make it too extreme because garish and glare would make it
      • yalaforge doesn't care, but people will complain if you change it ;-)
      • MartinRudat
for the main text, I think that you could make the link colour darker, or more saturated, but that might end up causing trouble for people who are colourblind...
      • Nyght
difficult to continue to work for as long as some people do look at these colors. :D
      • MartinRudat
huh. the links in the sidebar _are_ different colours, I've never noticed...
      • Nyght
        Yes they are Martin :)
      • MartinRudat goes to crank up the font-size... the font I'm using seems to be eating underscores...
      • yalaforge likes the new menu a lot better than the old sidebar
      • yalaforge
but the new sidebar, hmm, well ... ;-)
      • LTjake has quit
      • toxickore joined the channel
      • MartinRudat
hmm... do you have stats for which links people use the most often? I find myself using the quicksearch boxes a lot, and my profile page to get to my list of moderations (to find that release that started all this nonsense)...
      • yalaforge
nope, although it would be interesting
      • yalaforge once suggested to analyze the server logs to find out which artists are the most popular ones etc., but nobody seemed to be interested in that
      • MartinRudat
really? it doesn't seem (on the surface of things) to be too hard a thing to do... I know that lookup counts are computed for some record types already...
      • Nyght
I use the profile a lot, wiki intermittently and ...
      • old search
      • yalaforge
MartinRudat: I even volunteered to write the script, but still
      • g0llum
yalaforge: any ideas for better sidebar features? :-)
      • yalaforge
        yeah, actually
      • :-)
      • MartinRudat
I'd love a link to the releases I've added recently, I seem to go profile -> moderations -> page, page, page -> disc a lot...
      • yalaforge
g0llum: move the login link to the top banner (right upper corner)
      • then I can get rid of the sidebar :-)
      • Nyght
Yeah same here Martin, but others have the searching down to a science, so I think that's just lack of knowledge with advance search. ;)
      • g0llum
        yalaforge: yeah ;)
      • but the sponsors have to go somewhere it seems
      • because the userpref is ignored :P
      • yalaforge
well, I have no problem as long as I can click the 'hide' link
      • g0llum
the reasons i have the sidebar shown: resolution big enough / the search box :)
      • yalaforge
        yeah.
      • MartinRudat
Nyght: it's not so much searching, but getting back to the release I just added... I suppose I should just keep a tab open with the release in it... and every track and artist I'm tring to add relationships between too...
      • g0llum
but since ppl complained about 800x600 resolution...
      • Nyght
That's what I do Martin. ;) It's so much easier than back back back. ;)
      • yalaforge
seriously, I think the login link should be somewhere else
      • yalaforge didn't find it at first :-)
      • MartinRudat
        Nyght: but I don't have a 5000-pixel wide monitor! =)
      • Nyght
tabs and 1280 by 1024, it does work. ;)
      • yalaforge
it used to be on the landmarks bar, but it doesn't belong there either. after all it doesn't lead to a part of the site
      • yalaforge is trying to find a site that does it well
      • Nyght
course then you miss little things like colons and teleGUISE jumps on you for double colons ;)
      • yalaforge should probably stop complaining as he doesn't want to implement it
      • Or maybe he just likes pickin on me. :D
      • MartinRudat
Nyght: I'm talking about the tabs scrolling about three screen for the number of tabs I'd need to have open... =)
      • Nyght
LOL! Better use of your release and back works too!
      • I know when I was doing the AR's for .... Reinhold's tribute album I was doing to back's to shift the AR, it worked really well!
      • MartinRudat
I'd much rather have ARs as batch operations, but that's work...
      • Nyght
        two back pages too.
      • MartinRudat
if I had more ARs to do, I'd start considering writing a script to do all the clicking for me...
      • Nyght
after I applied the mod, I would click back to where you could choose the AR and go on;.. err.. no, that was Jack of All Trades. Sorry, where I had a computer, producer etc all for the same track
      • yalaforge
        g0llum: still here?
      • g0llum
        yes
      • yalaforge
        That's an example -> http://www.eclipse.org/
      • but the "Legal" link should be "login"
      • ojnkpjg
        here's a new one:
      • [/home/httpd/musicbrainz/mb_server/cgi-bin/Moderation.pm:940]
      • [/home/httpd/musicbrainz/mb_server/htdocs/mod/approve.html:57]
      • [/usr/local/share/perl/5.8.7/HTML/Mason/Component.pm:135]
      • yalaforge
and if you're logged in it's "username | log out"
      • Nyght
yalaforge: that's usually where login is in a lot of places
      • g0llum
        yup
      • yalaforge likes it and people seem to find the link, unlike the current solution
      • but show it to nikki_ and she'll complain about the font size
      • yalaforge
I'll take care of that :-)
      • g0llum
it only looks good if you use small fonts for these kinds of thingies :)
      • ojnkpjg
i like the way it renders in firefox a lot
      • i think it looks much better than it did a few months ago
      • g0llum
ojnkpjg: which site are you talking about?
      • eclipse is not a site i visit too often
      • MartinRudat grumps about sites that use flyspeck 3... then again, I've set my font-size to 10pt or so...
      • ojnkpjg
        mb
      • i wasn't paying attention to conversation earlier, if you were talking about something else
      • yalaforge
heh, in fact I know now who could implement it ;-)
      • MartinRudat
personally, I think wikipedia's sidebar looks nice, though I think the second section should be moved to the top of the sidebar...
      • ojnkpjg
        anyone played with plone much?
      • MartinRudat
plone? no, it rings a bell, though...
      • yalaforge
some content management system. never used it
      • there are so many these days, difficult to keep track
      • g0llum
ojnkpjg: thanks, i appreciate it :)
      • MartinRudat was in charge of the website for a school project, I just stuck a password-protected wiki up... I don't know why I did, no-one seemed to edit it but me... =)
      • ojnkpjg
plone is a CMS on top of zope
      • it makes my head hurt
      • luks
that happens with all open-source CMSes :)
      • Nyght hides during the way over technical stuff
      • Nyght
        ;)
      • MartinRudat shakes a unix manual at Nyght, ooga booga! =)
      • mustaqila cringes as MartinRudat just reminded him of Hasselhoff's Hooked on a Feeling...
      • MartinRudat
David Hasselhoff of Knight Rider and Babe^H^Hywatch fame?
      • mustaqila
        That'd be the badger
      • MartinRudat
        dear lord he sings too?
      • mustaqila
He has done for a while
      • Quite the sensation in Germany
      • MartinRudat likes Knight Rider... though I have to admit that I found KITT more interesting that the bloke sitting in the driver's seat... =)
      • Your opinion won't change in light of that above video
      • Nyght laughs at Martin and snags the UNIX manual, puts it on the list of a thousand and one things to do
      • Nyght
        hey muz@
      • mustaqila
        Hey Beth
      • Nyght
I don't think I'd want to hear David Hasslehoff sing. I think it would sound like a pained cat
      • MartinRudat hands Nyght a complete copy of a unix manual... do you have a spare wall to lean these shelves against? =)
      • mustaqila
I can't listen to an entire track of his without having to skip/stop it
      • Nyght
Uhhhhh... no Martin, I have a basement. ;0
      • ;0)
      • MartinRudat wonders if he should consider trying to get flash to go on his computer at some stage...
      • he's gotten old!! and sorta overweight!
      • yalaforge remembers he's got a complete unix v7 manual somewhere ...
      • MartinRudat
mustaqila: what, sorta like Barry Mannilow, only with less ability to sing?
      • mustaqila
        Hahah
      • MartinRudat
I was under the impression that a complete unix manual would be hard to misplace... kinda like misplaceing your dead-tree version of the Encyclopedia Britannica...
      • Nyght
and talk about a cheesy video!
      • of course, I'm not cringing from his voice.. so..
      • yalaforge
        yay! 7th edition, vol. 1. from january 1979 :-)
      • MartinRudat
        that's older than I am.
      • yalaforge
same here. but not much :-(
      • MartinRudat
...though not more than a couple of months.
      • ojnkpjg
i noticed a second edition of advanced programming in the unix environment was released
      • Knio1 has quit
      • i was really hoping for that for a long time
      • Nyght makes no comment oin age
      • then stevens drowned
      • i figured that was the end of that
      • yalaforge has the old apue. great book
      • yes
      • i think i have all of stevens' books except tcpip illustrated vol 3
      • Knio joined the channel
      • and my copy of 1 has been on load now for a couple of years
      • er, loan
      • yalaforge read TCP/IP illustrated 1 a few years ago
