hi, all, I got stuck in retrieving UTF8 CD information of Chinese CDs from the server using libmusicbrainz, can anyone help me?
2006-12-21 35558, 2006
Irene
call mb_UseUTF8 right after I created an mb object. After that I used mb_GetResultData to get the information of a CHINESE CD. However, it turned out that the data retrieved from the server doesn't seem to be in UTF8 encoding

Hi, just for your information, I released a new ontology based on MusicBrainz (a major update of the MusicBrainz Metadata Vocabulary). You can read the doc here (http://pingthesemanticweb.com/ontology/mo/) Any comments or suggestions will be warmly welcome.
I was about to throw that into the mod's channel for their pleasure ;)

I'm sure he just made some edits and the got voted down and now he's angry. I was when I first came here. Then I realized there were rules I should follow even if I don't agree. I just dealt with it rather than whining on last.fm's feedback forum... which is really the wrong place to be leaving feedback about MB anyway.

I have an idea of how to fix that (just posted it to that thread) but there's no chance in hell of it ever happening, unfortunately.

Earthpig
I must say I can kind of agree with the sentiment.

It seems that it's not always the right data that wins, but rather the most stubborn reverter.
2006-12-21 35513, 2006
hawke_
Earthpig: exactly.

or the automod
2006-12-21 35555, 2006
Earthpig
(And in the absence of evidence of different jewel-case listings, as far as I can tell that's what should trump 'style' guidelines for things like caps.)
2006-12-21 35550, 2006
Earthpig
(... it may not be 'Artist Intent' always, but a mixed-case track listing on the jewel case should at least qualify as 'Consistent Original Data'.)
2006-12-21 35522, 2006
Earthpig
hawke: well, the automod can be considered a stubborn reverter. :)
2006-12-21 35515, 2006
hawke_
Earthpig: I meant people in general who have automod capabilities.
2006-12-21 35541, 2006
Earthpig
oh ok. i don't know much about that. I never knew if they were people with a flag, bots, or both.
2006-12-21 35556, 2006
Earthpig
'trustedmod' would make more sense if it's a flag.
2006-12-21 35546, 2006
hawke_
there are both.
2006-12-21 35514, 2006
hawke_
there's the bot, which allows automatic entry w/o voting for stuff like capitalization
2006-12-21 35534, 2006
hawke_
and then there's a user account flag, which lets them simply put through any mods they want, without voting.
Maybe a solution would be that autoedits are blocked if the history is longer than X.
2006-12-21 35525, 2006
Earthpig
(Similar to what wikipedia does for pages that seem to be controversial.)

Hmm, I wonder how hard it would be to test my idea by setting up a MB database of my own and trying it.

Earthpig, it comes down to the Artist intent debate. The question you ask yourself is does "Feelin' the Same Way" ruin what the artist intended with "Feelin' The Same Way"? Does it lose all meaning? If you can debate that you have a valid argument, if not then the style guides will usually rule you out.
2006-12-21 35541, 2006
Kerensky97
Alot of the time ther eis good reason for the Caps, other times it's a simple font issue because some cover designer thought it looked cool.

kerensky97: Ok, so say it's not Artist Intent. Then it's ConsistentOriginalData, no? Unless someone can show a different set of liner notes.

with my idea, you'd have "earthpig thinks this track is spelled "Feelin' the Same Way", billy thinks it's spelled "Feelin' The Same Way", and bobby thinks it's spelled "Feelin' The Same Way" ... each user's preference is stored in the db, and the form presented to the public is the most popular.
a new user might want to enter their own info for the album, and they'd be presented with the track listing containing each spelling option, and would pick the one they prefer or enter a new set of tracks/spellings.

But the point is there are often many versions and many opinions, so a few basic rules that don't set on intent can be useful for a consensus.
2006-12-21 35554, 2006
hawke_
Kerensky97: but some differences of opinion are irreconcilable.
2006-12-21 35535, 2006
Kerensky97
hawke_: about the spelling differences I think NGS kind of goes into that, I'm not sure it it works that deep, ruaok would be better to answer that. But different versions of the same track might be possible.
2006-12-21 35557, 2006
Kerensky97
As for irreconcilable differences, that's what the voting is for.
