Kerensky97: the problem with the voting though, is it never achieves anything

kerensky: autoedits never get voted
2006-12-21 35542, 2006
hawke_
someone votes one way, enough agree and it flips...
2006-12-21 35550, 2006
hawke_
then someone votes the other way and it flips back.
2006-12-21 35509, 2006
hawke_
and so on, until one side gets bored with it.
2006-12-21 35504, 2006

the ideal would be to have something like a "permavote" where each person has their preferred view (which could change at any time), and the most popular view wins.

Kerensky97
Technically if enough people we involved you'd get more than a 50/50 split. And there might actually be locking in the future to limit those flips.
hawke_: i think this comes down to a user preference. on one hand you have the people who want tracks to be consistent in caps, and across albums, etc..
2006-12-21 35503, 2006
hawke_
warp: right.
2006-12-21 35509, 2006
warp
hawke_: on the other hand you have the people who want whatever is on the jewel case, even if that differs between releases, etc..
2006-12-21 35519, 2006
hawke_
warp: I belong to the latter camp
2006-12-21 35539, 2006

hawke_: i think MB will eventually need a user preference, and have both in the DB. because both camps have a fair amount of followers :)
2006-12-21 35504, 2006
hawke_
I think if you're going to have both in the DB, it would be just as easy to have unlimited options in the DB.
2006-12-21 35529, 2006
warp
but then when you look up the info, which one do you got to see of those?
2006-12-21 35539, 2006
hawke_
and then the voting becomes instead of "do you want to change this to that?", "would you prefer this view, that view, or the other view"
2006-12-21 35547, 2006
Kerensky97
And for companies like last.fm which gets preference?
2006-12-21 35502, 2006
hawke_
I would think the most popular would be the default preferred
2006-12-21 35541, 2006
warp
Kerensky97: the default preference could easily set to whichever camp has a bigger percentage of users, or something like that ;)
2006-12-21 35521, 2006
warp
anyway, the specific solution is not really that interesting to me yet

but i would like MB developers/users in general be aware of the problem, and hopefully at some point we can decide if a solution to it is needed, and if so, what the best solution would be.
2006-12-21 35551, 2006
warp
note that for e.g. japanese releases, because of their peculiar usage of english, the defacto standard is use whatever is on the cover. the rest of MB seems to mostly be the other camp (with the current style guidelines, or atleast the interpretation of them by the mods).
