        bye nikki
      • nikki_
        I'm already late
      • but the bus only goes every half an hour
      • BGreeNZ
        Bugger. :(
      • = kiwi slang for "fuck" or "oh crap"
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: that's actually a pretty common term
      • BGreeNZ: you hear it in .us on occasion
      • BGreeNZ
Made famous here by Toyota's Hilux TV ads
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: Python's GC is kind of a broken cracked-out reference-count architecture
      • BGreeNZ: do you have circular references?
      • luks
mhall: this is not a python problem
      • mhall
luks: just thought i should ask
      • BGreeNZ
mhall: How should I know? luks has the source..
      • luks
I'd point to ruaok, but he isn't here :)
      • oh, maybe not
      • GURT joined the channel
      • GURT
      • nechto13 wonders what separates a performance alias for a band member from their band nickname
      • BGreeNZ
        GURT: Yes, No, or mAybe?
      • GURT
        yes :P
      • BGreeNZ
        :)
      • Okay.
      • BGreeNZ blindly votes "Yes" on GURT's 3 listed mods
      • nechto13
GURT: what's the difference between a performance alias for a band member and their band nickname?
      • GURT
they don't perform as the nickname
      • mhall
The album taggers are stuck on [Loading album information] and won't pop up with the album names.
      • GURT
        BGreeNZ: thanks
      • BGreeNZ blindly votes "Yes" on the first page of GURT's open mods, just for the hell of it
      • uh okay
      • nechto13
mhall, i've had that. i think that was the reason i stopped using picard, but that was awhile back
      • nechto13 votes against blind voting
      • mhall
        What can I try instead?
      • BGreeNZ
GURT: Would you like me to undo them all?
      • mhall
I'd really like to unfuck the tagging on my MP3s.
      • GURT
BGreeNZ: no.. but i dont sugguest blind voting
      • nechto13
mhall: at that time there was MB Tagger, but it's obsolete now, especially with the whole use of MIPs and PUIDs
      • BGreeNZ
Well, I looked at each one for maybe half a second or so, and I trust you to know what you're doing...
      • GURT
then that isn't blind then i guess
      • mhall
        Shit I'm screwed. :-(
      • And I went to *so much work* to try to get it to run.
      • GURT
        which version?
      • a beta version?
      • g0llum
nechto13: can you please help to invite other classical editors for this on mb-users as well as mb-style?
      • BGreeNZ
There was a handfull of "add relationships" and "change track times" and stuff, I think..
      • mhall
GURT: yeah, the one with fingerprinting
      • GURT
try useing a non beta version
      • BGreeNZ
        Ooh! A Blog! :)
      • mhall
yeah but i don't think the nonbetæ support fingerprinting?
      • BGreeNZ runs to have a look
      • GURT
oh..then you might just have ot wait
      • i dont use picard yet so i don't really know the details
      • it's too hard to install :P
      • luks
        not on ubuntu :)
      • GURT
i'm too lazy to install it
      • and afraid i wont get it working
      • hrh
      • heh
      • i know you wrote me some lengthy instructions too.. but it was too over welming for me at th e time
      • luks
      • GURT
        nice
      • luks
        3 steps
      • BGreeNZ
GURT: I had no problem installing it on Windows 98SE and ME, well, aside from it crashing at startup because it was missing a file..
      • But, it *installed* without any problem ;-)
      • GURT
        i'll do it right now
      • i might be up all morning playing with it
      • BGreeNZ
GURT: What OS do you run?
      • GURT
        ubuntu linux
      • BGreeNZ
        Isn't that Debian in disguise?
      • mhall
        BGreeNZ: not quite
      • luks
so, the memory leaking problem is not in any of our libraries
      • GURT
        luks: "http://zim.musicbrainz.org/~luks/ubuntu /" not "http://zim.musicbrainz.org/~luks/ubuntu/"?
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: they are a lot less bureaucratical than debian so packages appear quicker but not necessarily are they better
      • GURT: yeah that's how apt-get works
      • luks
GURT: "deb http://zim.musicbrainz.org/~luks/ubuntu /" exactly as it says
      • BGreeNZ
        I see
      • nechto13
g0llum: will do. i'm not on mb-users list though, only mb-style. i'll spread the word on irc too. only i think it should be decided how we're gonna reorganize CSG before everyone starts screaming out suggestions
      • GURT
        k i'm just double checking
      • mhall
GURT: it's like /debian but with / instead of /debian
      • BGreeNZ: debian probably has the most intense QA of anybody I ever heard of
      • BGreeNZ
My introduction to Debian was when I purchased LindowsOS 4
      • g0llum
nechto13: clutcher2 might know who we could take to directly and ask for involvement. but posting to the mailing list won't hurt either
      • luks
i'm not sure if i should bug MusicIP devs about this or fix it myself :/
      • BGreeNZ
I didn't want to pay for "Click 'n' Run", so I learned how to pull packages in through apt
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: sadly the high standards of d.org don't always trickle down to the other distros
      • GURT
BGreeNZ: oh? did you install Lindows, realized you got ripped off and installed free Debian instead?
      • BGreeNZ
        GURT: Yeah, something like that
      • nechto13 throws some yes votes GURT's way after some consideration
      • GURT
        ;)
      • oh shit.. menu entry and everything
      • BGreeNZ
Then, I had just gotten Debian Woody installed on a desktop (netinstall through 56K modem), and about a week later Sarge was released :(
      • GURT
luks, i could kiss you :D
      • luks
        hehe
      • GURT
so THIS is what picard looks like
      • mhall tries MB Tagger using vmware and Samba
      • BGreeNZ
Unfortunately, when I tried to upgrade to Sarge, half of X-windows / KDE / Gnome broke :(
      • MBChatLogger
        Down with DRM!
      • GURT
i switched to linux this past summer after a CD with DRM pretty much hosed my computer
      • mhall
        BGreeNZ: oof
      • BGreeNZ
        DRM?
      • GURT
        yeah
      • inhouseuk
        digital rights management
      • mhall
GURT: I switched after Windows Server 2003 SP1 fried my encrypted disk driver and I had to decrypt 200GB of stuff using fucking DOS.
      • BGreeNZ
        Digital rights management?
      • GURT
        right/restriction :P
      • inhouseuk
      • nechto13
BGreeNZ: purpose of DRM: you don't buy your music, you rent it
      • GURT
or CRAP -- Content, Restriction, Annulment, and Protection
      • inhouseuk
        lol
      • GURT
      • BGreeNZ
GURT: How can any *Compact Disc* have DRM? Unless, of course, you are confusing those 5-inch shiny plastic round things that look like CDs with real CDs
      • GURT
      • MBChatLogger
        Down with DRM!
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: well technically DRM discs are not allowed to be called compact discs
      • BGreeNZ
Yes, that is precisely my point
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: Philips went psycho because they think it's all crazy (which it is) so they revoked permission to call them CDs since they don't follow the $COLOR Book spec
      • BGreeNZ
        I know
      • mhall
BGreeNZ: but the problem is, of course, once a term enters pop culture, there's not much to be done
      • inhouseuk
it was just permission to use the CD logo that was revoked
      • mhall
inhouseuk: yes, that's all there was *to* revoke
      • BGreeNZ
        CD = ("Compact" | "Corrupt") "Disc" ?
      • GURT
both discs have the compact disc logo on them
      • mhall
        !
      • !
      • BGreeNZ
They are not even allowed to *call* them "compact discs" or "CDs", as they intentionally break the standard
      • GURT
so i went through sonys little settlement thing last night
      • BGreeNZ
Notice how all the new double-disc jewel cases are embossed with "2DISC" instead of "2CD"
      • GURT
for one album they offered me a digital download
      • for the other they offered a digital download of the album and a choice of another album
      • but i cant get any of the downloads untill i .. either send them the cd, a reciept, or cut the UPC symbol off of the cover art
      • so i have to destroy my lossless media in exchange for lossy mp3s
      • mhall
        dipshits
      • GURT
and the selction for the albums was slim
      • the 'free' albums
      • BGreeNZ
GURT: Just get a CD or DVD drive that cleanly reads the corrupted disc.
      • GURT
        oh i do now
      • it's just the principal
      • BGreeNZ
The DVD drive in this computer has flawlessly extracted about 3 "Copy Controlled" discs
      • I don't have any more to try it out with (fortunately)
      • GURT
mine were Dave Matthews Band - Stand Up and My Morning Jacket - Z
      • BGreeNZ
Of course, the first thing I did with one of them was to begin distributing it using my PTP. EMI screws me, I screw EMI :)
      • mhall
        BGreeNZ: :-D
      • BGreeNZ
        Seems fair to me...
      • nechto13
it's obvious by now, but profits have replaced principals for corporations a long time ago. in this case it's not profit, but minimization of losses that drives sony's policy though
      • what's PTP? p2p?
      • mhall
maximize profit, minimize loss, whatever you do, interfere with FOSS
      • BGreeNZ
        Peer to Peer
      • mhall
anyways, one of my professors that teaches our computer ethics course believes in essentially unfettered capitalism, where trade secrets, patents, and copyrights can be used to profit to an unlimited degree
      • and i constantly attempt to point out that capitalism doesn't work without the rule of law and a sense of social responsibility to society
      • but nobody cares and i always get ignored
