that wasn't an attack on people not using their real names in IRC, it was just a statement of fact by me. I stopped using pseudonyms. that is all.

      • tma
OR, you could just work out your terminal translation issues and just use the cursor keys. :)

Amazon don't want MusicBrainz copying artwork, right ?
      • 2005-03-13 07235, 2005

      • enjayhch
but what about release dates ?
      • 2005-03-13 07242, 2005

      • cikkolata
        er...
      • 2005-03-13 07248, 2005

      • cikkolata
you can't copyright a release date
      • 2005-03-13 07253, 2005

      • cikkolata
        or whatever
      • 2005-03-13 07212, 2005

      • enjayhch
heh, so, can we add release dates to Albums from amazon, that don't have one already ?
      • 2005-03-13 07245, 2005

      • cikkolata
I don't see why not. I'd google to see if you can find something else that agrees with the date though 'cause amazon's aren't always correct
      • 2005-03-13 07210, 2005

      • enjayhch
ah ok, so best not to do it automatically ?
      • 2005-03-13 07224, 2005

      • cikkolata
        automatically?
      • 2005-03-13 07243, 2005

      • cikkolata wasn't aware that we could...
      • 2005-03-13 07204, 2005

      • enjayhch
well if an album already has an ASIN matched to it, then it would be quite easy to write a perl script to copy across the release date
      • 2005-03-13 07218, 2005

      • cikkolata
        ah
      • 2005-03-13 07220, 2005

      • cikkolata
        I wouldn't do that.
      • 2005-03-13 07253, 2005

      • enjayhch
just because of lack of accuracy of release date ?
      • 2005-03-13 07205, 2005

      • cikkolata
        yeah
      • 2005-03-13 07216, 2005

      • enjayhch
how about just taking the year and not the month/day ?
      • 2005-03-13 07230, 2005

      • cikkolata
oh, and also, the amazon link mb has doesn't always match that exact version of the album (and the countries won't always be right if they're imports)
      • 2005-03-13 07258, 2005

      • tma
Don't forget that a lot of Amazon info is supplied by second hand music stores

There is a somewhat moral argument over whether "no information" is better than "information that may be incorrect"
      • 2005-03-13 07201, 2005

      • enjayhch
I just feel that Musicbrainz has such a great structure, but would really start being interesting and useful (outside tagging MP3s) if it had that little bit more info
      • 2005-03-13 07215, 2005

      • tma
I tend to push for "information is better than none" myself... given that we aren't fighting a war or trying to build an atomic bomb here

      • enjayhch
I have been thinking of working on linking MusicBrainz and MusicMoz
      • 2005-03-13 07234, 2005

      • enjayhch
but MusicMoz is so crap/out of date

        lacking
      • 2005-03-13 07249, 2005

      • tma
I think we should accept this as a given, and have a caveat that states that "information given here may not be completely accurate".
      • 2005-03-13 07256, 2005

      • enjayhch
that I think it would be better for MusicBrainz to do it themselves

I think an 'Offical' mode browser for MusicBrainz would be great

Oh well. There's a great quote in it by the mad scientist Sax, where he talks about precision and accuracy. Let's say that there is something that needs to be measured, and you have a tool that that finds the value is, say, 93. Now, lets say the tool has an error percentage of 40%. Let's say that the value is in fact, exactly 93. This tool then, can be completely accurate, but you can't say it's very precise.

I just find the distinction between accuracy and precision interesting
