Hey, guys. I love MB and donated last Friday to help some. I'm trying to add a VA album and am having trouble figuring out the best style to use. Here's a poor link to the track listing. http://users.tapstep.net/saints/album/JSCD1.html Scroll down to CD SAMPLER #1. Tracks are listed by Artist TITLE, Artist, TITLE, etc. Note that the artist name, Eddie Condon, changes over several tracks. Should those be entered as different artists or just "E

        you bet!
      • 2004-06-02 15407, 2004

      • ruaok
looks like a real VA album to me...
      • 2004-06-02 15426, 2004

      • somniloquy
How do you mean the artist keeps changing?
      • 2004-06-02 15445, 2004

      • GuySmiley
yeah, it's a mess. it feels strange, though, to be creating new artists (as they're denoted on the cd), when only one track will ever be associated with that artist.
      • 2004-06-02 15409, 2004

      • somniloquy
You mean when one track is " Eddie Condon Town Hall Concert Volume 2" and the next is " Eddie Condon Town Hall Concert Volume 1"?
      • 2004-06-02 15422, 2004

      • GuySmiley
well, have a look at the link. track1 - Eddie Condon Town Hall Concert Volume 2 THE JOINT IS JUMPIN', Track2 - Eddie Condon Town Hall Concert Volume 3 THATS A PLENTY
      • 2004-06-02 15427, 2004

      • GuySmiley
        right
      • 2004-06-02 15436, 2004

      • somniloquy
        It's all "Eddie Condon".
      • 2004-06-02 15454, 2004

      • somniloquy
The bit after that isn't an artist name. Looks like a mention of what album it's taken from, would be my guess...
      • 2004-06-02 15401, 2004

      • GuySmiley
The other infromation isn't really the title of the track so where will it be retained?
      • 2004-06-02 15415, 2004

      • GuySmiley
        ah, ok. perhaps.
      • 2004-06-02 15417, 2004

      • somniloquy
        I'd go with it won't...

      • GuySmiley
        hehe, ok
      • 2004-06-02 15431, 2004

      • somniloquy
Could be a comment, but MB doesn't do comments...
      • 2004-06-02 15406, 2004

      • somniloquy
You could add the album "Town Hall Concert Volume 2", for example, and it'd have the same track on...
      • 2004-06-02 15419, 2004

      • somniloquy
If my guess that that is the album it's from is correct, that is.
      • 2004-06-02 15416, 2004

      • GuySmiley
right, i'll see if i can find such an album. freedb has an ID for this disc, but i always try to verify against at least one other source since freedb is often unreliable.

      • somniloquy
      • 2004-06-02 15444, 2004

      • somniloquy
        That's volume 1, at least.
      • 2004-06-02 15441, 2004

      • GuySmiley
Good call. So you think I should new create Some albums for that artist with those tracks on them then make them an aggregate VA album?
      • 2004-06-02 15443, 2004

      • somniloquy
AFAIK you can't add a track once and then tell it to be on two albums. I think you just have to make two albums, and that same track name will just appear twice then.
      • 2004-06-02 15458, 2004

      • somniloquy
So you could just add the VA one for now, and if you feel like it add the others, I guess.
      • 2004-06-02 15419, 2004

      • GuySmiley
Ah, I see. Just drop the extraneous album names for now.
      • 2004-06-02 15425, 2004

      • somniloquy
        Yeah, I would.

Argh. Japanese -> English name conversions make everything so hard. I have this one track that could be called "gips", "gibs" or "gibbs", according to different sources >_<

      • GuySmiley
Should the sortname for "Marty Grosz & Destiny's Tots" be "Grosz, Marty & Destiny's Tots" or is the symbolic & bad?
      • 2004-06-02 15440, 2004

      • 2004-06-02 15458, 2004

      • somniloquy
From reading the sort name guidelines, yes, I'd go with "Grosz, Marty & Destiny's Tots".
      • 2004-06-02 15412, 2004

      • GuySmiley
That's what i gathered, too. In those same guidelines I didn't get an indication of how a name like "Kenny Davern Jazz Trio" would be sorted. I figured it would be entered unchanged.
      • 2004-06-02 15439, 2004

      • somniloquy
Yeah. It's more the name of the group than of a person, so I'd leave it unchanged too.
      • 2004-06-02 15400, 2004

      • somniloquy
Of course, we may both be wrong, but no-one ever seems to talk much here... ;p
      • 2004-06-02 15410, 2004

      • GuySmiley
i'm getting that indication, too. :)

The freedb import bot just imported an album and it's just horrendous.
      • 2004-06-02 15408, 2004

      • somniloquy
No spaces anywhere to be seen. At all.
      • 2004-06-02 15416, 2004

      • somniloquy
Guess I'll have to fix it...
      • 2004-06-02 15438, 2004

      • somniloquy
It's also CD2 of something, and CD1 isn't entered... guess I should import that too...
      • 2004-06-02 15418, 2004

      • GuySmiley
how does that happen? i see moderations from freedb all the time. there's a program trolling the MB DB all the time?
      • 2004-06-02 15438, 2004

      • somniloquy
I guess they've just got a bot set up that randomly imports albums from freedb, relying on humans to format them correctly afterwards.
      • 2004-06-02 15410, 2004

      • GuySmiley
seems like a great way to pollute the db. :)
      • 2004-06-02 15411, 2004

      • somniloquy
        Hehe, yeah.
      • 2004-06-02 15424, 2004

      • somniloquy
People have to vote yes on the added albums though.
      • 2004-06-02 15446, 2004

      • GuySmiley
does every moderation need at least one positive vote to pass? i've always wondered that.
      • 2004-06-02 15419, 2004

      • somniloquy
        Yeah.
      • 2004-06-02 15443, 2004

      • somniloquy
They expire after a certain amount of time, and if no votes have been done on them the first vote afterwards decides whether it's added or not.
      • 2004-06-02 15418, 2004

      • somniloquy
If they get 5 straight votes either way then they're automatically added/rejected.
      • 2004-06-02 15436, 2004

      • somniloquy
If they expire and have less than 5 votes, but all votes agree, they're added/rejected, too.
      • 2004-06-02 15448, 2004

      • GuySmiley
so no moderation is truly dropped? rather, after the few-day trial period a single vote one way or the other makes the decision?
      • 2004-06-02 15450, 2004

      • somniloquy
At least, that's what I understood of it.
      • 2004-06-02 15456, 2004

      • somniloquy
        Yep.

      • 2004-06-02 15452, 2004

      • somniloquy
        Otherwise people might just vote no on the album being added and my changes will be for nowt ;_;

I checked a few sites for track listings, and they all agree with what I changed it to.

      • 2004-06-02 15411, 2004

      • somniloquy
There's volume 1 and vol. 2, and they were released together, so yeah, it'd be disc 2... but of that set, not the original release.
      • 2004-06-02 15428, 2004

      • somniloquy
Released together at a later date, that is, not initially.

I'd say use the ampersand if it's usually part of the duo's name. Otherwise, I'd use and if it's a one-off pairing of the two.

as opposed to splitting up a band that had 'and' in it's name...

I don't see how that's helpful when some pairings shouldn't be split or where their marketed name is "Dude & Dude2" or whatever. What's AR?
      • 2004-06-02 15455, 2004

      • jinxie
it also uses one symbol instead of '+' 'and' '&' commas, etc... that currently seperate them now...

      • GuySmiley
The idea is to split everything to individual artists?

eventually... say Santana and Hendrix collaborate on an album...
      • 2004-06-02 15445, 2004

      • somniloquy wonders how it'll distinguish between a track containing more than one song by different artists, and a single song worked on by more than one artist...
      • 2004-06-02 15449, 2004

      • jinxie
right now, you get a whole new artist called 'Santana and Hendrix'... (or Santana _ Hendrix) etc...

      • jinxie
with AR, under Santana you will have all HIS stuff... the a list of other people he worked with.. and the albums theymade.. and on the other person's page they have the same.. in reverse

ok well in this case, you have 2 people who made a lot of albums as a duo, they each also have their own albums as well

      • somniloquy
Sounds good. I just hope it works, and doesn't require people to go through the entire database fiddling and checking things...

        I am against using /

some script could just as easily split on &

somn> on each artist page it will list the album, same as it does now for VAs, but EACH artit will get it, not the NON artist "Brittney and Spice girls'

So that's only interesting on collaborative works rather than an album by, say "Brooks & Dunn", who are always known as such?

      • jinxie
        GS> exactly
      • 2004-06-02 15428, 2004

      • somniloquy
Aye. If it split 'Faith and the Muse' into 'Faith' and 'The Muse' I'd be rather upset... ;p
      • 2004-06-02 15441, 2004

      • GuySmiley
...and Brooks & Dunn will still get split up in the DB or they'll remain paired?
      • 2004-06-02 15453, 2004

      • GuySmiley
        hahaha
      • 2004-06-02 15411, 2004

      • jinxie
"Brooks & Dunn" IS the artist in that case.. though Brooks or Dun may also have released stuff under their own name... LOL....

Someone would probably then merge 'The Muse' into 'Muse' and we'd all go bonkers! >_<

presumably if i searched and clicked on Dunn, i would get a page that would give me Dunn and his works as just Dunn.. then a thingie saying 'releases as 'Brooks and Dunn'.....
