surfing the catalogue is fine

just submitting, and importing is borked

downloading tag data off the server is fine too

because we have never had to deal with TONS of submissions before.

That proxy thing: it's definitely better with the proxy, but I don't think it's wise to turn it on now, just when you're going to bed.

final p.s.: my concerns about being able to download the gateway binary were unfounded, it seems. It wasn't really the binary at all, it was just 0 bytes of application/octet-stream, which is exactly what the live server does.
