there's a standard way to encode isrcs in a particular subchannel; if you can read them at all, they're there
      • 2016-08-16 22922, 2016

      • kepstin
but the ability to read subchannel data from computer cdrom drives has always been iffy, and if a disk is poorly mastered as well... :/
      • 2016-08-16 22942, 2016

My PC can read the ISRCs off most discs, but it can't find them on these 2 releases in my collection

yeah, probably just a difference between the cdrom drives in the two computers
      • 2016-08-16 22903, 2016

      • kepstin
if you somehow put the drive from the mac into the pc, i bet it could read them there :)
      • 2016-08-16 22959, 2016

      • kepstin
sometimes using different software can help, because the command used to do the read - or maybe, the timing of the commands, makes a difference.

having looked into the format a bit, I'm really just amazed that we can read audio cds with any accuracy at all :/

      • 2016-08-16 22947, 2016

      • hibiscuskazeneko
With all but those 2 releases, both drives found the ISRCs without incident
      • 2016-08-16 22944, 2016

      • hibiscuskazeneko
I wonder, is there some sort of code on the disc that obfuscates the ISRCs on PC drives (similar to some early CCCD encodings, in that Macs didn't recognize it at all)?

hibiscuskazeneko: I'm pretty sure isrcsubmit uses a different backend on MAc OS X vs. Windows vs. Linux, so even if you call the same command, it's really different software actually doing the CD reading in the background - isrcsubmit is just parsing that software's output.
      • 2016-08-16 22903, 2016

      • JonnyJD
hibiscuskazeneko, Freso: The backend has different code for different systems and this usually depends on driver code on the system, too
      • 2016-08-16 22925, 2016

      • hibiscuskazeneko
That still doesn't fully explain why it can read most discs fine on multiple platforms with different hardware but not certain titles
      • 2016-08-16 22943, 2016

      • hibiscuskazeneko
Is there some new CD standard that isrcsubmit hasn't caught up with?
      • 2016-08-16 22917, 2016

      • Freso
As kepstin said, hardware is different, and software between platforms is different.
      • 2016-08-16 22953, 2016

      • Freso
Some hardware has some issues with the softwares, but not with others; some software has some issues with some hardwares, but not with others.
      • 2016-08-16 22928, 2016

      • Freso
So a CD that one hardware:software pair reads perfectly might be gibberish to another hardware:software pair.
      • 2016-08-16 22907, 2016

      • hibiscuskazeneko
If that were the case, wouldn't a larger number of titles be affected?

      • 2016-08-16 22914, 2016

      • Freso
The hardware:software should be able to deal with far most things, but there will always be edge cases.
      • 2016-08-16 22934, 2016
