(Ie., should 24-bit encodes be different Recordings to 16-bit ones?)

looking for an opinion here, since I'm not an expert:

I just bought a CD and one of the track lengths are different (track is 10s longer). Should I add a new release for USA, since technically the other ones are JP with the new track length

or should I just edit the length and assume that the original release-person made a typo
oldtopman: does the existing release have a discid? if so, you could compare that with yours

FichteFoll: definitely would have a differing discid, this is the american version?

(if I understand discid correctly)

then I say yes, it's a different release

I'll send a message to the person who made the recording and have a new release

we should have the american recording for completeness' sake anyway

Freso: my opinion is "in general no, unless it's mastered in an audibly different way"

if the 16bit is clipped ridiculously and the 24bit isn't? sure, make them separate. if the 24bit is just the same signal with a tiny bit less quantization noise? no point, merge them.

kepstin notes that most of the 24bit releases he's seen provide *no* audio advantage over the 16bit releases; they're the same master, except not converted to 16bit

and even 16bit has extremely good dynamic range that mostly goes unused in music :/

Freso: a huge number of 24 bit (and 16bit) encodes are not mastered from sources with the same fidelity, in practice

and yes, 24bit is snakeoil that wastes your disk space
