Wikidata's search is bad: you have extra words in your query (like, "Scherz-Polka") and it stops to work, plus we have quite a lot of mistypes and alternate titles for the works, which makes it worse. The most reliable query was just "composer_name opus_number". But without it, it would be harder. VIAF is also a mess: at the end of the list 2 ids per work were very common. One work even had 3 IDs (+2 if it was splitted to parts[?]), ouch.

xplt: VIAF is just an automatic aggregator, no human ever looks over the data. They take what those associated "member libraries" send them and run some stuff on it.
